we wish, another wego game would be nice. Of course we'd have to find a new forum for the tumbleweeds

Should not be "Coming Soon", thanks. This has been in limbo for too long, I'm discussing with Ludo to either get it out in some form or finally remove it from the release schedule. With all the work that was put into it, I would prefer some form of release. When I know which way this goes, I will let you all know.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik,

Make it happen. The WEGO mechanic makes it so appealing. Would be a crying shame if this was dropped..as bad as when Close Assault was dropped. That would then be the two games that enticed me over here in the first place never to see daylight.

Sadly, it might be case of being careful what we wish for.

Combined Arms, the game formerly known as Battlefields, the game formerly known as Battleline, did not get to release and certainly for a good reason. Perhaps it is better to let it die.

Best wishes,
Steve

Why not release it as a public beta

But as what though? A public beta assumes that it is in some form of playable state and that the developer is committed to bring it up to a state of release.

There is every indication that the game was as developed as it was ever going to get and that, as a game, it was just not good enough. It happens, unfortunately, that sometimes a great idea, when implemented, is nothing more than a turkey.

Best wishes,
Steve

The game and its editor were declared to be finished by the developer in the September of 2009 and he moved on to other projects.

The only way to put this thing out of its misery is face up to reality.

Best wishes,
Steve

I would like to see it for myself before it is erased. I am sure there are a few others who would like to as well.

They could try to persuade the developer to agree on an open-source release for free. That would appear to be the only other realistic option to letting it die with some dignity.

Best wishes,
Steve

If I remember correctly the hang up was, not surprisingly, the computer opponent AI. I would be satisfied with a human v. human game. It would be a disaster for sales of course but I don't think they really care at this point...

BTW, does anyone know what language was used for the coding?

When asked if the game could be released without the AI, Ludo explained that the AI was central to how the WEGO system worked and removing the AI would leave no game. It was how the game was designed. You are chasing butterflies.

I understand the disappointment. This was a hugely ambitious project and if they had managed to pull it off it would have been an instant classic. It is a sadness that it didn't work.

It happens.

Best wishes,
Steve

I think it would be better to just make copies of the old V4V / W@W games. Probably faster than this attempt to seemingly re-invent the wheel.

The bizarre thing is that, as can be seen in a different thread, amateurs with no corporate backing and on their free time managed to create a playable wego time in a fraction of the time this think took to become vapourware. Maybe handing this game to them would be a better way forward.

might be another good idea for a early access type game release, pay and support while you beta it, makes sense to some but not all agree with it, but then those who wish to play and support do it with hard cash and get a not only early access and beta version, but discount from a early price and a sort of thanks for the support as well, which could pay for some more programmers etc or time for others to help?

imo some games need the boost or will never see the light of day

I think TOAW 4 is looking like it may be able to go to 1km per hex, making this pretty much obsolete.

That's not a deal breaker for me. A game that I can make my own scenarios at 1km per hex scale (like the old V For Victory Games), and the many other features that CA was to have may be incorporated into T4 and if they are with an updated code and engine, then that could be the definitive game for the next 10-15 years.

A few more months and Combined Arms will be old enough to get a driver's license.

TOAW is not really like the V4V games. To start with , the supply system is vastely different. The game is really operational in scale, anything below regiments and 5km/hex (app the scale it was designed for) just does not work 'right'.

besides, no wego (again, operational, where wego is much less of a concern)

Maybe that's the problem, the game is just a boozy teenager locked in his bedroom.
