I checked out the Panther War College, read the doc and downloaded the files and played the 2 scenarios with the game. The docs don't discuss the specific scenarios, but discuss the German policy of using recon aggressively to grab and hold objectives, and its differences and similarities to US recon policies.
In the first scenario, this is not too difficult: one probes towards the objective then changes to assault when they meet resistance, and eventually take and hold the main objective.
The second scenario as the Germans is a horse of a different color: the Allied force (not counting the reinforcements that enter the map for the Allies)is more than twice as strong as the German armored recon force, and is also an armored force. At first sight, considering that a force ratio of 3:1 is generally required to attack, it doesn't look good for the Germans. But the Allies do not hold the objectives initially, and this is really a meeting engagement where the Germans bump into the Allies on the way to the first objective. I did manage to push through the Allies who arrive piecemeal and take the objective, but then the Allies are sitting on my supply line with a force much larger than mine. So although I am sitting on the objective, the Allies get the credit for holding it. One of my units is caught behind the Allies and cannot make it to the objective.
So I run a unit up to the second undefended objective and manage to hang onto that,which leaves me with a marginal defeat.
But all of my units except the isolated one are low on supplies, fuel and ammo, and the Germans are sitting on their supply line with a much stronger supplied force. In real life, unless the Germans had a much stronger force coming up the map, this sounds like a recipe for disaster.
So what is this scenario supposed to prove? That a recon battalion should forge ahead heedless of the enemy strength and let itself be surrounded by the enemy to get to the objective at all cost? Since there is no specific description of these scenarios, I am not sure what their relationship to the "college" idea is.
In itself the college idea is a good idea for training, but I am more confused than anything else, mindful of Patton's orders "I don't want to hear any messages saying you are holding an objective. The only thing we are going to hold is the Germans. We are going to hold them by the nose and kick them in the butt!" (which may require some acrobatics, but...)
