RE: Beta, Scen 2

I have seen a couple of AAR's where at least one division that I think starts the game as inactive (not Delay), according to Tracker, is in play. For example the (J) 5th Division (Inf.).

As a Japanese player I would like to put some of these units into play.

My questions; am I seeing this as I think I am seeing it or am I misinterpeting something?

Can inactive units be put into play by the player, and if so, how?

Thanks for any clairfication and information.

You are seeing it wrong, so no need to worry about those units. Inactive might mean that it the placeholder parent unit for smaller units that can 'rebuild' to form the parent unit. The 'inactive' parent shows up in Tracker. It's also possible that Tracker might refer that way to units that have already withdrawn, or that are in the scenario file but never will actually arrive.

Thank you for the quick answer.

Let me ask in a different way. Where is the (J) 5th Division (as an example, there are others that are causing me the same problem)?

I see others using it, I look at Tracker and see all this nice AV (but inactive so no location), I see in the data-base dump that it exist, but can not find it on the Ground Unit screen.

There are a number of units that start the game broken down into sub-units. In many cases different parts of the unit show up at different times. The parent unit can only come into play when the sub-units are brought into the same hex, have the same HQ, and the same mix of devices (for example if one sub-unit upgraded a gun, then all sub-units will have to upgrade that slot before the parent formation can be built). Once all the criteria has been met, the parent unit can be built from the pieces. There are times you may want to do this, a larger unit is more robust in combat, but a large unit is less flexible if you need the unit spread out across multiple hexes.

If you look in the editor, there are also units that have a delay of 9999, which makes them completely inactive in the game. They shouldn't even be seen by tracker as they don't exist for game purposes. In many cases the scenario designer made multiple versions of a scenario and units that weren't used in one version were just set to inactive rather than deleted.

Not sure this is true during the initial reconstruction of a unit. There was a post from Michael that explained different rules applied when combining the parts of a unit to when rebuilding from divided thirds.

Also, note that some recombined units have more or less devices than the constituent parts. In some cases these can be valuable devices such as DP guns and Tanks.

Thank you both for your answers. I see that you are saying essentially the same thing and the dime has dropped.

I found the 5th Division (and other missing divisions) using what you stated and as you said, it is sub-units scattered about. My problem was that I was looking for something that actually said the “5th Division” which none of the sub-units do.

Damn, so much for extra AV.

With the editor, I have added "ID markers" in front of all sub-unit names, e.g. "5ID" for all components of the 5th Infantry Division or "1TD" for the sub-units combining into the 1st Tank Division. Helps me to keep track, esp. when sorting the LCU list by name - all components of a parent unit will be grouped together. 20 min work in the editor, much searching avoided later.

Players also have the option of using some of their "destroyed" units.
Hit the "information tab at the top of your planning map...Look under LCU's and go to "destroyed" units.

All of your destroyed units will be shown, and some will be seen to be rebuildable for a fee.
Be aware that for the most part, you will get them back in a damaged or depleted state and once they arrive on screen, will need time to fill up with replacement troops and/or equipment, (which will be direct from your pools.)

It can be a good option, especially if you NEED certain types, like aviation ground crew units....

Caveat Emptor........
