Hello from a new guy. I bought this game a few weeks ago and I am impressed to say the least. When I was in elementary school, I used to recreate the PH, Midway and Coral Sea battles by drawing dozens of little paper airplanes and ships, and using a toothpick simulate battle destruction. Eventually, I purchased the Avalon Hill game Midway, but I had no one to play it with so if I remember corectly, I just laid the game out and admired the counters. Fortunately my days of Pacific War solititude appear to be ending.

The learning curve is really something, but I have spent the last couple weeks reading the manual, a couple of excellent AARs, and a good number of the 'must read' threads . I have also played the coral sea scenario several times from both sides. I feel I am ready to try my hand as the allies in the full campaign in a PBEM game.

A couple of questions:

- Is the stock campaign still a good way to go for PBEM?
- What are the critical house rules so as to avoid the game being unbalanced by gamey tactics (if at all possible to do so).

Welcome BB

Stock is a good way to learn PBEM. It;s also good that you go with Allies since you have time to learn with them a nd a few mistakes are not critical. With Japanese that's not always the case. The other mods out there may offer more 'accuracy' from some POV but stock is ok/good to learn PBEM.

HR are hard to say. They are really down to you and the oppponent you play. A common one is not to allow gamey paradrops of a few troops/amphib attack by a few troops to purposefully block divisions of men from moving.

Regards,

Steven

Another common one is not to allow Speedy to sail his subs west of the international date line.......

yes, a VERY GOOD house rule would be: don´t let Speedy use subs at all!

Read Faber's AAR. I've never heard such foul language from a penguin.

Actually, guano can be created by any kind of birds... it is merely the droppings that can be quite beneficial one they have accumulated to the point that they can be mined for fertilizer.

I do not believe that the guano wars in South America were over bat guano. Instead I beleive they were over seafowl guano..
