Hello.

After being awed by some of the masterpeices in this section, I decided to try my hand at writing an AAR for a game I recently started with tonedog.

The game is using the NikMod 9.2b 42A scenario, which begins in '42.

We agreed to the following setup;

Settings;
Sub Doctrines = on
FOW = on
Allied damage control = on
PDU = off
Reinforcements = +/- 60 days
Auto sub ops = off
Expand at start = off
Automatic upgrades = off
Accept replacements = off
Turn cycle = 2 days

Rules;
1. Air or ground units belonging to the Kwangtung command may not leave
Manchuria unless PP's are spent to change their command.
2. Air or ground units belonging to the India command may not leave India
unless PPs are spent to change their command.
3. Air or ground units belonging to China Command may not leave China or
Manchuria, unless they change command.
4. PT Boats: PT boats can only be in a TF by themselves.
5. No more than 6 ships in an ASW TF.
6. No submarine Invasions.
7. No 4EB on Naval Attack Below 10,000ft before '43, no B29 on Naval Attack at all.
8. Maximum of 50 active A/C per airfield level +/-10% (160 A/C on Level 3 is fine, 185 is not)
9. Maximum of 25,000 troops per Atoll hex
10. Allies do not strategic bomb occupied territory, only what Japan owns on 7/12/42

Basically, we both keep China stuff in China unless we pay PPs, you keep Machuria stuff in Machuria unless you pay PPs, and I keep Indian stuff in India unless I pay PPs. And the basic rules to fix PT and ASW mechanics, and stacking limits.

Start with either Historical turn on, or off. If off, Allies do not form new TFs or give orders to existing TFs. If off, Japanese do not invade crazy places like Australia or Java on turn 1.

No splitting of TFs in a port hex into multiple one ship TFs as a means to dilute airstrikes. At sea this is ok, but not in a port.

We will also limit land combat in CBI theatre, as both of us are more intrested in the pacific war side of things. Of course, when the time comes for me to recapture Burma and Malaya, then things change.

I intend to convey the AAR as a serious of annotated screenshots from various operational theatres, outlining my planned operations, and what the sneaky japanese are up to.

As I will be disclosing my operational plans here - this is a closed AAR, so my opponent is not permitted to read it.

This is also my first full campaign game against a human. I have played the Guadalcanal scenario vs AW1Steve, and I have played the first year of the full campaign against my brother, and ofcourse beat up on the AI.

Because of this I do not mind if any readers want to go ahead and point out anything Im doing wrong.

Next post will look at what I predict as being two main operational regions for the next few months - the Aleutians and the region around Port Moresby, and possibly also Midway.

North Pacific. Sorry for the red text.

It says
Transport TF
7 x AP
2 x AK
"Additional transport assets being brought in from West Coast to facilitate operations. They are also bringing supplies."

Theres also a typo in the orange Transport TF note - its meant to say "...require several (trips) because..."

Ok, apologies for the red text again by the way, I didnt realise it would be so unreadable - ill refrain from using it in future.

This one says
CVTF
CV Lexington
CV Yorktown
"Moving to Cairns with a Replenishment TF to support operations in the area. CVs Hornet and Enterprise will arrive in the reigion in a week."

Central Pacific
Lastly, a brief note on the Central Pacific - there is nothing happening here (were only 1 turn into the game afterall), but Midway may well also be a potential target for the Japanese. Like PM, it is lightly defended and undersupplied. This will be corrected in the coming week.
I have sent the last 2 damaged BBs from PH to the west coast - they will likely only be operational by late '42.

Slightly higher level map detailing overall flow of operations. It will be intresting to see where the Japanese commit themselves.

May 7th, 1942

Nothing thats really worth showing in a picture has occured in the last week, so Ill just do a quick summary.

North Pacific
-The first elements of the RCT have landed at Attu, including most of their heavy equipment. Will probably need two more trips to move the support and remaining infantry elements.
-The supporting transport groups are almost the Dutch Harbour, from where they will split up, with AKs delivering supplies to Attu, and APs heading to Anchorage to embark the remaining infantry elements of the RCT, and the EAB for shipping to Attu.
-Surface combat battlegroup has arrived at Kodiak, and Saratoga is not far behind. Does not look like I will need either.

Central Pacific
-Damaged battleships have left Pearl Harbour and are almost halfway to the West Coast. Ill see where I put them for repairs when they get there.
-Hornet and Enterprise departed on the 3rd, and are heading towards Pago Pago before heading to Noumea. Both have airgroups slightly understrength, a detail I did not have the aircraft to correct before sending them out.
-A supply convoy to Australia left on the 5th, carrying some 50,000 supplies. Some 20,000 of these will be dropped off at Noumea, the rest are for Brisbane.
-A transport group carrying the 24th USA Division is due to leave for Midway on the 8th. This should complement the existing defences there nicely, and make the Japanese think twice about attacking it. I was hesistant to send a transport TF there until I realised that Wake is still a Level 3 AF, so no torpedoes to worry about. Better to do this now than later.

South Pacific
-Lexington and Yorktown arrived at Cairns on the 6th, and are waiting for further orders. The replenishment TF is due on the 8th.
-Hornet and Enterprise should arrive at Noumea on the 13-15th.
-Some Japanese transport shipping spotted around Lae, but nothing else.

Burma/India
-I moved a group of Hurricanes to Imphal on the 3rd.
-Following this, the Japanese aircraft from Mandalay attempted to bomb the AF, to no avail.
-In response, I bombed Mandalay AF from Calcutta, scoring half a dozen IJA planes destroyed on the ground.
-Ive moved further bombers to Dimapur to supplement these attacks. Escorts are provided by the Hurricanes at Imphal and Kohima.

China
-The Japanese launched air attacks on my forces at Yenen starting on the 7th.
-I moved a group of P40s to one of the nearby airbases with orders to LRCAP Yenen - lets see if this gets me some easy kills.

I use Paint.NET, which is easy to use, and free.

I am considering putting the a white background in for the comments however, as it would let me use a smaller font and still be easier to read.

Again, nothing worth a picture has happened in the last few days.

North Pacific
-The first shipment of the RCT has finished unloading and transports are headed back to Anchorage. The remaining elements of the RCT and an EAB have been loaded onto APs and are due to ship out soon.
-No sign of Japanese activity, not even recon aircraft. This bodes well.

Central Pacific
-S-40 was sunk off Kwajalien, by D3A's no less. This makes me think there are atleast some of his carriers in this region. (This is important as I have not looked at the Scenario from the Japanese side - So I have no clue where his CVs actually are!)
-Troop transports to Midway are underway, with a second group with supplies due to leave in the next days. Lets hope KB isnt headed this way. I placed some more recon assets at Midway to hopefully give me a chance to get out of there if they do come to visit.

South Pacific
-CVs Hornet and Enterprise have arrived at Pago Pago and will now proceed to Noumea and then Brisbane to reinforce airgroups and then join the rest of the US Carriers.
-If the IJN Carriers are at Kwajalien, this may mean they plan to move on PM. Beginning to regret sending Saratoga up north, will need all 5 CVs if I want to try fight him here. CV Wasp is due in 60 days or so.

Burma/India
-Another round of airstrikes results in the IJA loosing over 10 planes on the ground. As of the 9th, it looks like theyve pulled all aircraft out of Mandalay as the AF icon is gone. Will continue to attack with my medium bombers for a few more days.
-Heavy bombers were assigned recon duties over Rangoon, I want to see if I can risk running in a fast bombardment group from Ceylon. If not Ill resort to air attacks.

China
-No further attacks on Yenen, P40 group relocated and set to stand down.

Things look to be stirring up. Pictures to follow.

SigInt
-Something I neglected to mention was an earlier notice that an infantry brigade was inbound for Rabaul. Well, on the 10th I got another message involving a different brigade, also headed to Rabaul. And on the 12th, I found out that BB Kirishima is headed for Lunga. Im pretty confident I know where the Japanese intend to strike now.

North Pacific
-Troops still being shipped to Attu.
-CV Saratoga dispatched to Pearl Harbour, and then towards Noumea via Pago Pago.
-Potential invasion or harassment of Paramushiro Jima under consideration, if the Japanese CVs are indeed in the Southern Pacific. This would likely buy some time for me to organize a defence and possible counterattack if he intends to move further southwards from the Solomons.

Central Pacific
-Troops landing at Midway, considering a second shipment to bring it up to the agreed 25,000 troop limit.

South Pacific
-BB Kirishima headed to Lunga - likely attached to Kido Butai, and an invasion force. The Japanese know Lunga is deserted as they flew recon over it on the 10th onwards.
-All CVs have been ordered to Noumea in order to concentrate them as soon as possible. Currently uncertain if I will use them to oppose him here or not.
-Additional recon assets moved to Noumea and Luganville, to hopefully let me get a glimpse of what hes bringing into the Solomons.
-Several submarines ordered into the areas around the Solomons, hopefully to detect and sink any incoming ships.
-Small minelayer group of 2 DMs left Noumea for Lunga on the 11th. I want to get them in and out hopefully before the Japanese show up.
-I do not want to try rush troops to Guadalcanal in hopes of getting there before him, I doubt I would make it, or have time to set up suitable defences.

Burma/India
-Air raids on Rangoon by Liberators caught another 4 planes on the ground, with no CAP up at all. The group has been stood down for now to recover.

South Pacific
-It seems my SigInt, while accurate, was a little too late.
-Japanese bombarded Lunga on the 14th, with 2 Kongo class BBs and atleast 3 Nachi class CAs present.
-Landings on Lunga on the 15th, and on Tulagi simultaneously. Initial landings disruputed the Japanese heavily though (~3500 casualties vs undefended base), indicating they probably were not prepared for this landing.

-Minelaying TF will withdraw to Noumea.
-Submarines still moving to positions, S-38 near Rabaul ran afoul of a large swarm of destroyers, possibly part of another surface combat group, or possibly Kido Butai. Unlikely to be ASW TF as these are limited to 6 ships. Could also be a Fast Transport TF.
-Small task force consisting of CL Leander and CL Achilles ordered to raid shipping at Tulagi - it dosent look like there are any surface assets there, they are all at Lunga.
-Carriers still moving to regroup.
-Further surface assets being moved to Noumea from Brisbane and Townsville, including 2 CA, 2 CL and assorted DDs.
