Question: Does anyone know what the codename for the Normandy invasion was?

On June 6th the official codename of the Normandy landings was not Overlord.

According to the sources I dug up...Overlord was the original plan for the invasion...but that plan was altered along the way by revisions that called for additional landing beaches and airborne drops...all of which became "Operation Neptune".

Thus...according to this source, "Neptune" became the actual invasion codename because it's airborne elements would be the first real deployment of Allied forces in France.

As such "OverLord" was then (again, according to this source) simply the codename for the "overall Allied strategy for the invasion and expansion of the landing areas"...but no longer the codename of the "actual landing operations". :eek: :)

There is a famous scene from the life of Patton (and the movie) in which he takes a detour in his Jeep in North Africa to a battlefield, saying something along the lines of "I have been here before." What was the battlefield, and what armies fought there in what war?

As for Patton...I swear I remember him saying he fought the Romans as a Carthaginian....though the name of the battle escapes me.

Oh.. yeah!!..... That really rings a bell.... It was definately the Romans vs the Carthaginian..... and I'm not sure what battle either..... probably the one where the Romans defeated the Carthiginians and sacked Carthage..... but just to add the fact that Patton said this at a cross roads. Down one track were German units ready to attack, and the driver wanted to go down that one. However, Patton overided him and told him to go down the other one..... I guess Patton must have been very superstitious....

Status: offline 		The russians replaced the engines with long-range diesels, which were very very unreliable atleast in the first raids.

Edit: The planes they used were Pe-8's and some other types I can't remember right now :)

and that was before they were even in germany:D :D

Status: offline 		That's easy, Blücher or previously known as Deutschland. Sunk 1940 when Germany was invading Norway, torpedos hit the ship after it had taken some serious beating from coastal guns.

or then its some other ship.
but when i was in norway ages ago they rented boats to go see some german boat wreck

I haven't seen Patton in a long while, but was it the battlefield of Zama??
Wasn't that scipio africanus vs hannibal in the... 2nd... 3rd punic war?

Status: offline 		That is certainly correct - Patton believed he had been Hannibal at Zama in the 2nd Punic War, 202 BC. It was Hannibal's final significant defeat.
