Orzel Bialy -> Ok...Let's Have Some Fun... (8/20/2002 9:48:36 AM)

Just for the heck of it.....let's try some WW2 Trivia. :)

Start with an easy one.

Question: Does anyone know what the codename for the Normandy invasion was?

JediMessiah -> (8/20/2002 9:54:14 AM)

Operation Overlord

next.....

Orzel Bialy -> And the Reply of Overlord is... (8/20/2002 10:13:42 AM)

Incorrect....according to the source I found earlier tonight :eek:

On June 6th the official codename of the Normandy landings was not Overlord.

Next! ;)

Heide -> (8/20/2002 10:30:45 AM)

Seem to recall seeing it called "Overload" at some point... :confused:

stevemk1a -> (8/20/2002 12:09:42 PM)

Was it 'Neptune'? I think that was the codename for the assault phase of the operation ...

Orzel Bialy -> WE HAVE A WINNER.... (8/20/2002 12:27:41 PM)

Give that man a cigar! :D

According to the sources I dug up...Overlord was the original plan for the invasion...but that plan was altered along the way by revisions that called for additional landing beaches and airborne drops...all of which became "Operation Neptune".

Thus...according to this source, "Neptune" became the actual invasion codename because it's airborne elements would be the first real deployment of Allied forces in France.

As such "OverLord" was then (again, according to this source) simply the codename for the "overall Allied strategy for the invasion and expansion of the landing areas"...but no longer the codename of the "actual landing operations". :eek: :)

OKW-73 -> (8/20/2002 12:32:59 PM)

next question -
What was name of Hitlers dog?

stevemk1a -> (8/20/2002 12:44:43 PM)

Unless this is a trick question I think it's Blondi ... he got to try out the poison first when Hitler and Eva Braun comitted suicide.

OKW-73 -> (8/20/2002 1:20:41 PM)

10 points for the Willy!! :D

next question-
How old Hitler was when his father died?

stevemk1a -> (8/20/2002 1:41:50 PM)

Alois Hitler died in 1903. Hitler was 13 years old at the time.

OKW-73 -> (8/20/2002 1:59:29 PM)

Correct again! :D

antarctic -> (8/20/2002 5:31:12 PM)

Another Question..... What was the Japanese communications "code" (Their version of the Enigma) called?

Orzel Bialy -> Was that not... (8/20/2002 6:31:51 PM)

the "Purple Code"?

I believe that's what I read in one of my books....hmmm, perhaps I should have opened one to make sure before I posted...:D

stevemk1a -> (8/21/2002 11:53:15 AM)

O.K. here's a question ... when Hermann Goering asked Fighter Ace Adolf Galland what he could give the Luftwaffe fighter force to help them fight the British during the Battle of Britain, what was Galland's reply? (bonus points for knowing what cartoon character Galland had painted on the nose of his plane).

antarctic -> (8/21/2002 1:59:26 PM)

Orzel... spot on! It is the "purple code"

And the answer to Willy's question.... He asked for Spitfires ... not sure what cartoon character though ..... maybe snoopy??

Gaius Marius -> (8/21/2002 4:53:08 PM)

Here's one -

There is a famous scene from the life of Patton (and the movie) in which he takes a detour in his Jeep in North Africa to a battlefield, saying something along the lines of "I have been here before." What was the battlefield, and what armies fought there in what war?

Orzel Bialy -> Let's see... (8/21/2002 6:30:35 PM)

I thought Galland had a version of the early Mickey Mouse on his plane...not sure though.

As for Patton...I swear I remember him saying he fought the Romans as a Carthaginian....though the name of the battle escapes me.

antarctic -> (8/21/2002 8:04:52 PM)
As for Patton...I swear I remember him saying he fought the Romans as a Carthaginian....though the name of the battle escapes me.
Oh.. yeah!!..... That really rings a bell.... It was definately the Romans vs the Carthaginian..... and I'm not sure what battle either..... probably the one where the Romans defeated the Carthiginians and sacked Carthage..... but just to add the fact that Patton said this at a cross roads. Down one track were German units ready to attack, and the driver wanted to go down that one. However, Patton overided him and told him to go down the other one..... I guess Patton must have been very superstitious....

Sort of, Patton believed in reincarnation and believed his former incarnations were those of great historical generals. Go figure.

Belisarius -> (8/21/2002 11:19:30 PM)

Early on in the war, the Russians undertook a very daring operation to bomb Berlin (mostly for propaganda purposes).

Lacking long-range bombers, what modifications were done to the aircraft assigned for the mission?

Kaakao -> (8/21/2002 11:39:47 PM)

The russians replaced the engines with long-range diesels, which were very very unreliable atleast in the first raids.

Edit: The planes they used were Pe-8's and some other types I can't remember right now :)

Ivan -> (8/22/2002 1:21:34 AM)

yeah lol i remember that russian bombing run, they lost like 30-40 percent of the planes because of malfunction :D :D :D
and that was before they were even in germany:D :D
then the fun stuff started

Don Doom -> Here is one. (8/22/2002 3:21:49 AM)

What was the name of the German cruiser that was sunk by torpedo/'s fired from the shore.
Bonus points; What country did it.:D

Kaakao -> (8/22/2002 3:51:38 AM)

That's easy, Blücher or previously known as Deutschland. Sunk 1940 when Germany was invading Norway, torpedos hit the ship after it had taken some serious beating from coastal guns.

Ivan -> (8/22/2002 4:27:27 AM)

ive been on top of blücher, on a clear day you can see the ship sitting there on the bottom.

or then its some other ship.
but when i was in norway ages ago they rented boats to go see some german boat wreck

Orzel Bialy -> OK...we're on a roll now... (8/22/2002 5:37:58 AM)

Ok...here's one:

What 1944 Western Front battle was the last time a medieval fortress played a decisive role against a mechanized army?

Don Doom -> Re: OK...we're on a roll now... (8/22/2002 7:22:00 AM)

I believe it was Metz or arken[ not spelled correct]

Orzel Bialy -> Don Know's His Stuff! (8/22/2002 10:12:47 AM)

You are right....it was Metz! ;)

I haven't seen Patton in a long while, but was it the battlefield of Zama??
Wasn't that scipio africanus vs hannibal in the... 2nd... 3rd punic war?

Oh, and while we're asking questions...

What American company(s) were involved in wwii before the united states actually entered the war? (and I'm not talking lend-lease)

Gaius Marius -> (8/22/2002 5:39:38 PM)

That is certainly correct - Patton believed he had been Hannibal at Zama in the 2nd Punic War, 202 BC. It was Hannibal's final significant defeat.
