Wouldn't this be the UK? Seeing as the war caused her to lose her whole empire?

It's likely that the UK would have lost her empire eventually. Various nationalist movements were sprining up in places like India prior to WW II. This, combined with the fact that the empire was beginning to cost the UK more than she could get out of it, would probably have led to its fall. The war just sped up the process. JMHO from what I've read.

Here's a soft-ball q:

Which nation's tanks had such a bad reputation that the Germans gave them the nickname 'self-propelled coffins'?

1.) Who ~won~ WWII. List all those that apply.

2.) What country lost the most, overall in WWII?

3.) What country had the strongest army at the end of WWII? [/B][/QUOTE]

Here's a couple of quick and not too academic answers:

1) USA - the war made it (her?) a World Power. The U.S. also escaped the destruction of the other Allied nations relatively unharmed.

2) Probaly Soviet Union/Russia. In all aspects.

3) USA again, with Soviet Union a close second. SO would probably have been more than a match for the U.S. on land, but the U.S. dominated the seas and air. You can't win a war without controlling the sea. Check your history books for reference. ;)

I have not heard this. His last words are unknown, since he locked himself in a room with Eva Braun and his dog. His last words before this I believe were somehting innocuous to his staff, like that he was "getting his affairs in order" or something.

Nero, on the other hand, did say "What a poet dies in me" before the Praetorian guard killed him, I believe.

Time for me to get in on this action...

During WWII an enemy ship was boarded and captured at sea by US forces for the first time since the War of 1812.

What was the ship? (half credit if you're from Chicago)

For bonus credit:

Who was the officer who dreamed up the plan and commanded the ship that boarded the enemy? (Hint, my son, Daniel Vincent Behling is named after the officer, who was a good friend of mine. This is the man who inspired me to join the Navy and also to become a published author. He had a series of Navy books published in the late 60's early 70's) :)

Extra bonus credit:

What was the name of the US ship that did the boarding?

Extra, extra bonus credit:

Where is the captured enemy ship now?

Bernie -> (8/30/2002 9:28:08 AM)

This one might stir up a hornets nest, and I admit it's based upon information I was unable to verify but....

Two allied countries during WWII still had a declaration of war existing between them from a previous conflict, one that still exists to this day, because the treaty ending the conflict was never properly signed and approved. Name the two countries.

Baldrick -> (8/30/2002 9:34:57 AM)

U 505.

I confess. I've been on it. Who could live on a closet sized war boat?

Baldrick -> (8/30/2002 9:38:27 AM)

I forgot the extra extra credit.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago.

And I live in the cess pool of socialism, the left coast and near Seattle and Gomorrah.

Also correct (the location of the captured ship)

Anyone want the rest of the details or should I wait to see who can answer the remaining questions? :)

A hazard guess on my part, but doesn't England and France have some unfinished business?

I'm sure England (Great Britain, that is) has some part in this... :p

Might also be United States..they didn't sign the Treaty of Versailles....also I recall the Denmark and some South American country were 'at war' until late 80's...but I don't remember what was the original cause for this 'war'. The 'war' was totally forgotten until some historian in Denmark stumbled upon some old documents :)

Correct! England and the US were, and still are to this day, at "war" because the treaty ending the war of 1812 was never signed and ratified properly. :)

At least that's the information I have on the subject...which could be wrong I admit.

Here's one:

Which German AFV was named after a mammal that is *not* a big cat? :)

Extra Credit: Which German vehicle was named after a biblical character, and what was the vehicle's function?

Final: Which experimental British AFV was named after the nickname of a famous warrior (who was not Cromwell), and what was this individual's real name--and when did he live?

:) :) :)

stevemk1a -> (8/31/2002 11:12:13 AM)

Ok the German AFV mammal name not a big cat is the Brummbaer (Grizzly Bear). The other answers I'd have to look up...

Weeell...he did hurry the production of the Bf 110, but whether it was a failure is subject to debate :)
It could also be said that he was chosen to be the scapegoat due to luftwaffe's performance in the Battle of Britain.

A+ to Willy and Voriax, for Brumbaer and Goliate, respectively!

Now for a hint on part III, which British AFV was named after a famous warrior, here's a hint: he was prominent during the interminable war with France, and the first part of his nickname is a color (or lack thereof).

;)

Btw, I was originally thinking about the Wolseley wheel/track tank.

The British government skotched a plan by Military Intelligence to assassinate Hitler. Why?

During Operation Market Garden, the Allies refused the services of this section of Dutch Resistance. What was its name, and how well was it armed?
