Orzel Bialy -> Hmmmm...good question... (8/22/2002 7:53:25 PM)

about which US company(ies) were involved in WW2 first....can't wait to hear the answer.

Until then....here's another one from me:

On 9 Sept 1939, aircraft from what British ship forced down and
captured the first German plane downed in World War II?

S-type -> (8/22/2002 8:49:01 PM)

I just couldn't remember this one, so I had to look it up. Is that cheating?

WWII: What was the real story behind the Mickey Mouse insignia painted on the fuselage of your fighter plane?

Galland: We started this in Spain, and when I painted it on my Me-109E in JG.26 it was holding a hatchet and smoking a cigar, which I loved. But after the war I had to give cigars up.

Heide -> (8/22/2002 9:32:44 PM)

Wasn't there some brouhaha recently about IBM selling to the Germans during the early part of the war?

Ivan -> (8/22/2002 9:34:08 PM)

yeah ibm sold these machines, that the germans used to register everyone in the nation and made it easier to snag jews from their homes or something like that.

Belisarius -> (8/23/2002 3:54:32 AM)

To me it seems more strange that Opel, while a GM subsidiary, continued to supply trucks etc. to the Wehrmacht throughout the war. :rolleyes:

Oh well, I guess the buck beats anything :p

Ivan -> (8/23/2002 5:02:08 AM)

hehe
who designed all the german uniforms?
take a guess

I donīt know about the rest, but the SS-uniforms were designed by no other than Hugo Boss.

There is nothing quite as stylish as an aryan male in a black SS-uniform.:rolleyes:

antarctic -> (8/23/2002 2:57:51 PM)
the SS-uniforms were designed by no other than Hugo Boss.
Hmm... don't know about that one. But probably, most of the other uniforms, and definately a large proportion of Nazi propaganda was designed by old Adolf himself.... and this brings me onto my new question...

What was Adolph Hitler's other dream occupation (the one he SHOULD have taken up)?

Antarctic

Ivan -> (8/23/2002 2:58:20 PM)

correct.
hugo boss.
i think he actually designed all the uniforms.
not sure tho.

Steve Wilcox -> (8/23/2002 3:23:04 PM)

I'm thinking architect was Hitler's other dream occupation.

antarctic -> (8/23/2002 4:15:41 PM)
I'm thinking architect was Hitler's other dream occupation.
That's about right ..... Hitler wanted to be an artist and/or architect..... I think that his dying quote was about how Germany had lost a great artist.... hmmmmm he musta be a pretty twisted guy....

Hussar -> True or false (8/23/2002 7:04:56 PM)

True or false?

1. American forces were engaged in hostilities against Japanese forces in the Pacific theatre before the British forces engaged he Japanese?

2. British XIV Army killed, wounded or captured more Japanese than were inflicted by the entire US Forces in the Pacific theatre?

(I hope that these do not generate too much Flak..I'm all for a quiet life)

Orzel Bialy -> Hmmmm.... (8/23/2002 11:02:35 PM)

Someone from England asking those specific questions....seems like loaded questions to me...bound to start a controversy of one sort or another. :D ;)

1) debatable (pearl harbor dec 7, 1941)
vs. (malaya (dec 7, 1941)

The attack began at Pearl Harbor, though some historians say that a force struck a British installation on the Malay peninsula a few hours before.

another source says:
attack on malaya started at 7:30 am on Dec. 7, 25 minutes before 1st wave at PH at 7:55

2) false
theatre japanese combined kia:
south asia = 200,000
pacific = 700,000

source: http://users.erols.com/mwhite28/ww2-loss.htm

even if the numbers were close, the numbers are confounded by losses due to concurrent operations by allies, etc (China, India, USA, Anzac, Disease) in the South Asian theatre.

Heide -> (8/24/2002 3:27:22 AM)

Hitler wanted to be a painter, he applied twice to I believe an art institute in Vienna and was denied both times. I saw a picture of one of his paintings in the newspaper here recently, he wasn't that good. :)

Hmmm.... I wonder which job was more fun...being a painter or a dictator??

And in the spirit of Multiple choice questions, what was the Japanese radio code for the attack on Pearl Harbour?
Choose the MOST correct Answer!

A) Snoopy, Snoopy, Snoopy!
B) Tora!
C) Ichi Misu!
D) Tiger, Tiger Tiger!

Well, he was better than me:

Actually, he wasn't a bad artist at all, he just didn't stand above the crowd... there were scores of good architectures around ;)

JediMessiah -> (8/25/2002 1:34:59 AM)

b or d...not sure which (i guess these are all kinda trick questions)

antarctic -> (8/25/2002 8:34:33 AM)
b or d...not sure which (i guess these are all kinda trick questions)
Come on, only one answer accepted.. :-) , anyone else game for a guess??

Antarctic

PS... you are on the right track... and yes, this is sort of a trick question...

JediMessiah -> (8/25/2002 10:54:22 AM)

tora means tiger...and i believe it was supposed to be announced 3 times for the attack to initiate

G_X -> (8/25/2002 11:40:51 AM)

Here's a couple good ones...

1.) Who ~won~ WWII. List all those that apply.

2.) What country lost the most, overall in WWII?

3.) What country had the strongest army at the end of WWII?

Whoo Boy!! Is this gonna stir up a hornet's nest! :rolleyes:

JonnieWalker -> (8/25/2002 12:53:17 PM)

G_X this questions are philosophical, like, to be or not to be. Exept second, this country is SU.
tora means tiger...and i believe it was supposed to be announced 3 times for the attack to initiate
That's right. This makes the answer (D).. the English translation of the radio code... the "most correct answer", remember....
1.) Who ~won~ WWII. List all those that apply.

2.) What country lost the most, overall in WWII?

3.) What country had the strongest army at the end of WWII?
1) Okay.. Britian, and the Commonwealth (Canada, Australia etc), America, USSR, China, France and the occupied countries.

2) I believe that Japan "lost" the most.... even the Emperor was in disgrace. However, if you talk in terms of people, then Russia lost.

3) Either the US or the USSR.

Also, thanks to Voraix for all that trivia... I love the one about France and Britian wanting to merge in 1940.....

Antarctic

Steve Wilcox -> (8/25/2002 3:53:48 PM)

I once read somewhere that "tora, tora, tora" was actually "to ra, to ra, to ra", ie two words not one and didn't mean tiger but something more mundane (maybe like "do it" or something, I can't remember what it was or where I read it). Am I insane or has anyone else ever heard of this? :p
PS Re: artist/architect, when answering architect as Hitler's second dream occupation I was thinking of artist not dictator as his first dream occupation, thus my answer (remember architect Albert Speer and Hitler were buds). :)

The P-51 Mustang gained it's fame with the same Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that was used in the Supermarine Spitfire series. What engine was originally put into the P-51, with much less spectacular results during its initial testing?

I never heard that he applied twice but did read from somewhere that he was rejected because caricature of his did look a like headmaster of art institute...or at least headmaster did think so...so maybe WW2 did start because this headmaster :D Story also tells that this headmaster was a jew...

antarctic -> (8/25/2002 5:31:50 PM)
so maybe WW2 did start because this headmaster Story also tells that this headmaster was a jew...
Other theories put forward on why Hitler was anti-semantic include:

-The doctor treating his mother when she dies was Jewish
-He allegedly contracted Syphillis from a Jewish prostitute in his early years....
