This test - run vs Shark - is awaiting the Japanese first turn. He found some IJN data issues - and these are now corrected - so the test will run with revised files containing corrections. It will be similar to 13A - and may use the same advisors or a tag team (still organizing).

From turn two Mifune will join me in a Tag Team. We will probably play the opposite seats from however we organize it for Test 13A. We also will use Allied policy advisors in a way similar to 13A.

Turn one is working up - and differs from 13A in the following respects:

1) The Allies are assembling at Brunei in the SRA.

2) The Allies are going to attempt to reverse the order of movements at Hawaii - with the carriers attempting to assemble and engage the enemy fleet train near Johnston Island and with the United States Fleet (battleforce and support ships) first moving North - then reforming and sending whatever is possible to the South Pacific by whatever routes appear to be safe (and supportable with fuel). Any other ships will head to Alaska or the West Coast to join later convoys. Another difference is that only Adm Hart and the Asiatic Fleet HQ will attempt to withdraw from Luzon - to lead the Asiatic Fleet - which is assembling as a body - first at Brunei - then at Palembang - then at Soerabaja - and finally at Darwin.
The RN forces will join up at Brunei. Dutch and RAN forces will assemble at Kendari and fall back to join the Anglo/American forces at Darwin - assuming we have to fall back at all. The Allieds may attempt to run oil into Manila if things go well on Luzon.

The night turn began with an Allied ASW TF of 3 units attacking - and missing - I-4 near the US West Coast. This was a warning sign - something like the attack on the midget IRL.
South and West of there I-1 did better - putting two fish into AV Pelican - right up by the central coast - causing her to sink.

I-171 missed AVD McFarland at Lahaina.
Later in the night this non-event was repeated.

Ro-41 missed RNN CL Endracht in the South China Sea. DMS Evertson was unable to hit her in reply.
Later in the night, PC Arend and Serius detected, attacked and missed Ro-41 at Merak/Serang.

I-157 missed AP Ruth Alexander near Mindinao. AVD William D Preston was unable to hit her in reply.

Ro-43 missed 6 inch guned Soemba in the Makassar Strait.

Ro-31 torpedoed and sank AK Bonketoe with torpedoes and shells in the Malacca Strait.

USN sub Sturgeon put two fish into Kotoku Maru at San Fernando - probably sinking her. 62 casualties to troop cargo. 5 ASW units counterattacked ineffectively.

Ro-33 put two fish in TK Mei An as she left Manalia Bay - almost certainly sinking the tiny tanker. She and her two sisters were famous in the Panay incident - involving river tankers and gunboats on the Yangtze.

The day turn began with an attack on HK. 10 Ki-48s attacked - 1 was lost - and 1 runway hit was scored.

42 Ki-48s caused 90 casualties, 1 gun lost and 5 vehicles lost at Kota Bahru. 6 other hits.

45 Zeros swept Clark. No CAP to engage.

20 Nells attacked Clark. 17 casualties and 1 vehicle lost. 17 casualties, 1 vehicle lost, 65 other hits.

KB sent 47 Kates, 73 Vals, 9 C3N recon plnes, and 9 Zeros to Pearl Babar. 1 P-35 on CAP. AR Rigel took 4 bomb hits. 13 Vals, 1 Kate and 1 C3N recon planes lsot, 18 aircraft of 3 types damaged. 7 casualties on the ground. 209 other hits. The airfield went down from this punishment. This is competent: if invasion forces are entering the Hawaiian area - it is vital the main Allied air base is down. But not much damage was done to ships in port - in the port hex.

21 Bettys caused 14 airbase related hits at Johnston Island. There were no aircraft present, however.

A JAAF attack caused 14 casualties to the ROC 39th Field Army.
Another caused 8 casualties to the Hong Kong garrison unit.

10 Ju-88s caused 8 casualties to the Indian Army 8th Brigade in Malaya.

A JNAF attack caused 18 casualties to the Guam Insular Force.

KB sent 39 Vals and 23 Kates, escorted by 65 Zeros, to Lahaina where a surface TF was detected. It was actually a loaded fast transport TF with infantry reinforcements for the island. 4 P-40s on CAP - 2 of which were shot down. They got 1 Zero. 3 Kates destroyed, 5 damaged. 1 Val damaged. 12 ships attacked - 8 DD and 4 DMS. 12 Torpedo hits on 7 ships. 21 bomb hits on 3 ships. 4 ships missed entirely. The 8 ships hit were all heavily damaged. 609 casualties, 22 guns lost, 4 vehicles lost to embarked troop cargo.

11 Kates attacked three ships North of Oahu. 2 were damaged. AK Antares was hit by a torpedo. AK Royal T Frank and CL Raleigh were lost.
11 more followed up immediately - and put 2 fish into Antares.
17 more straggled in (called by radio perhaps to the target area?) - and this time they put two fish into the cruiser - and two more into Royal T Frank.

10 Kates and 22 Ki-36s attacked gunboats Peterel and Wake at Shanghai. 19 bomb hits were scored - 16 on Peterel. These already damaged vessels cannot get anywhere - so they only serve as distractions for air strikes until they are sunk.
20 Ki-48s followed up - but could no longer find Peterel as a target - and for some reason - didn't try for Wake.
12 more - joined by 16 Nells - tried again - and still could not find Peterel.

10 Ki-48s missed DD Scout and DD Thanet at HK. For some reason these ships had not departed port in spite of their orders.
10 Nells followed up immediately - torpedoed DM Thracian - and missed DD Thanet - in the same place.

8 Nells put 2 torpedoes into ML Redstart a hex out of HK. 3 Ki-21s were also involved - but missed entirely. 14 Claudes were escorting.

6 Bettys attacked and missed CL Mauritious and DD Vendetta at Johore Bahru. 1 Wirraway was on CAP.

111 Bettys and Nells (!!) attacked Singapore unescorted. 22 Buffalos on CAP. 13 were shot down by defensive fire (!!!)
1 Betty destroyed, 1 damaged, 5 Nells destroyed, 7 damaged. 11 casualties, 46 airbase related hits.

54 Bettys, 26 Ki-48s, 18 Ki-21s and 132 Zeros raided Clark. 10 P-40s on CAP. 15 P-40s destroyed in the air and on the ground.
40 airfield related hits. No Japanese air casualties. 178 casualties, 6 guns lost, 40 airbase related hits.

13 Vildebeeste - escorted by 5 Buffalos - raided Kota Bahru. 1 Rufe and 2 Pete seaplane fighters on CAP. BB Mutsu torpedoed. BB Nagato and Yamato missed. 4 Vildebeeste lost, 5 damaged.
Later 3 Hudsons missed AK Kansai Maru at the same location.

3 Vildebeeste out of HK raided San Fernando Luzon - missed CA Ashigara - 2 were shot down.

12 Marine Wildcats - all set to naval attack - tried and failed to hit 4 ships of the force invading Wake Island. 1 was damaged.

2 Vildebeeste missed AV Kamikawa Maru at Singora.
5 Hudsons missed 2 APs immediately thereafter.

2 SBDs missed DE Fuyo at Lahaina.
15 more went on to attack BB Fuso and BB Ise one hex offshore. 1 hit was scored on Fuso. 2 were destroyed and 11 damaged by AA fire No CAP.
82 Kates and 21 Vals then went to engage a small force North of Oahu. CL Rahleigh, DD Tucker, AK Manini were all hit by torpedos (6 total) - and Raleigh was also hit by a bomb. Only 1 Kate damaged by AA fire. No CAP.
The Kates must be getting tired - 44 managed to miss AK Vega in the same area.
18 more put a fish into AK Manini.
18 more put 5 fish into CLAA Utah - and one into AR Vestal. 71 Zeros were escorting - 8 P-40s on CAP. These shot down a Zero. 3 Kates destroyed, 1 damaged. Somehow 11 P-40s were lost - excessive claims???

5 Bettys missed DD Ventetta and DM Stronghold - 1 bomber was damaged.

8 Ki-48s tried to attack Peteral - but could not find a target.

Ro-27 torpedoed and sank ML Kung Wo near Shanghai.

6 AP and 4 AKs encountered AVD McFarland at Lahaina - but the "surface battle" resulted in no action.

4 IJN river gunboats found USN river gunboat Wake - and sank her with 7 hits.

CA Nachi and Ashigara led 6 DD in surface action vs AK Governor Wright - sinking her with 14 hits at San Fernando. This is another case the ship had failed to leave port - she should have been two hexes away by then.

4 USN PT units engaged a transport force near Kona. They were driven off by defensive shellfire. ML Syoka Maru and DE Hokaze both scored a hit.

5 IJN DD attacked and missed USN sub Sturgeon at San Fernando.

I-4 - which opened the turn - now torpedoed, shelled and sank AK Redwood near the West Coast.

A major SAG led by BB Yamato, Nagato and Mutsu - shelled KB. 484 casualties, 1 gun lost, 21 vehicles lost. 70 other hits.

A medium SAG led by CA Chokai and Maya shelled Rabaul. 116 casualties, 3 guns lost. 39 other hits.

I-1 missed AO Sabine near the US West Coast.

I-7 torpedoed AK Gladys Moller in the South China Sea.

690 CD shots fired by the Marines at Wake scored 49 hits on 10 ships (2 DD, 2 DE, 1 PC unit, 2 AK, 3 AP). PC 19 & 20 and AK Taruhi Maru heavily damaged. 404 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost, 8 vehicles lost. 41 Allied casualties, 3 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

Landings at Johnston Island (373 casualties), Kavieng (132 casualties), Aparri (549 casualties), Legaspi (153 casualties), Guam (95 casualties),
Hollandia (78 casualties).

Landings at KB opposed by 111 CD shots scored 19 hits on 4 ships. 549 Japanese casualties.

Mines opposed landings at San Fernando but no hits. 481 Japanese casualties.

Landings at Rabaul were opposed by 33 CD shots. 3 hits on two ships, 3 ships missed entirely. 281 Japanese casualties, 5 Allied casualties.

Landings at Lahaina opposed by 127 CD shots, 10 hits on 7 ships, 3 ships not hit at all. 484 Japanese casualties, 33 Allied casualties.

Wake captured by shock attack = 26:1 odds Fort Level 1 - 35 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost, 2 vehicles lost. 1985 Allied casualties, 55 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 6 F4F-3s lost (so what happened to the other six???).

Japanese deliberate attack at Wuchang/Wuhan - 0:1 odds - 19000 vs 24000 Chinese - 775 Japanese casualties, 31 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost.
64 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost.

A similar attack at Sinyang achieved 2:1 odds. The position was captured by the Japanese. 864 Japanese casualties, 29 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. 119 Chinese casualties, 2 guns lost.

An attack at HK failed to achieve odds or reduce fortifications. 269 Japanese csasualties, 7 guns lost. 131 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

Allied ground bombardment at KB caused 8 Japanese casualties and 2 guns lost.

Alliled ground bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Johnston Island was captured by shock attack. 35 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost.
960 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost.

Not only are the bulk of Allied ships not being successfully engaged, the Allied carrier force was able to assemble - out of detection range - although this wasn't the goal. [I hoped they would be spotted - and draw off the carriers on a chase] They are in position to strike from an unexpected direction - so they will. The Sara will join another carrier at Panama - and these to divisions will meet up in a few weeks - if they survive the ocean crossing. The battleforce will defend the West Coast until elements can transit to the South Pacific.

Player comment by Shark:

It's nice to see that you are going to be agressive in trying to defend things. Nice change of pace as most allied players tend to 'turtle up' for the first 6-8 game months. I'll have to be more carefull than normal.

4 Blenheim intruders raided Bangkok - but failed to damage anything.

I-172 torpedoed and sank DD Chew near Molokai. Chew had been badly damaged yesterday by air strikes, but offloaded troop cargo at Lahaina and withdrew to Molokai. A number of other destroyers and DMs did the same thing - but many of them were engaged and sank today at Molokai.

Ro-41 torpedoed and sank ML Rigel nerak Merak in the Malacca Strait.

Ancient pre dreadnaught era CA Iwate and Izumo aided by river gunboats Ataka and Toba shelled and sank the wreakage of PG Wake at Shangahi - with only four hits.

6 PT boat units (3 vessels each) of the Philippine Army, US Navy and Royal Navy ran in on Aparri - and put fish into DD Minazuki (sunk during the turn) and DD Asakaze (likely to sink before making a port like Takao able to help her pump out). The Philippine Army PT unit was eventually sunk - in this and an immediatly following action - by gunfire. Two other PT units took a shell hit in the first action and RN 2nd PT Division took 2 more in the second action.

CD guns at Midway fired an unspecified number of shots at unspecified targets (might be like the night before the war began at Linguyan Gulf - where CD guns fied at shadows). But then it was for real - 633 CD shots fired at pre dawn landing forces. 30 hits on five of 6 targets engaged. AK Toyooka Maru on fire, MSW W11 & W12 on fire, DD Hayate missed entirely, CL Sendai 5 hits, AP Kumakawa Maru 4 hits, AP Nekka Maru only 3 hits but on fire, heavy damage. 486 Japanese casualties, 14 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost to counterbattery fire.

Pre dawn landings at Rabaul encountered 8 CD shots (no hits) 37 Japanese casualties, 4 Allied casualties, 1 vehicle lost.

USN sub Narwhal torpedoed and hit AK Katsuragi Maru- but torpedoes failed to detonate.

AK Asuka Maru hit a mine at Molokai.

A Dutch PC unit (Beneb and Gemma) missed RO 41 at Merak Serang.
Later 2 Dutch DMS and PC Circe and Raub also missed her.

Ro-31 torpedoed AS Wuchang in the Malacca Strait.

I-2 missed AP Tasker H Bliss near the US West coast.

I-154 shelled, torpedoed and sank AP Van Dieman near Singapore.

And that was just the night turn!!!!

4 A-20s - from Palmyra - missed ML Syoka Maru at Kona Hawaii.

10 Vildebeeste came in on KB - opposed still by the three seplane fighters on CAP. 1 lost, 4 damaged.
ML Mogamigawa Maru hit by a torpedo. ML Ayatosa Maru and CLAA Katori were missed.

4 Blenheims put 3 bombs into AP Sanura Maru at Singora - causing heavy damaged.

2 P-40Bs strafed and missed AK Kotaku Maru at San Fernando.
18 P-40Bs strafed and missed CLAA Kashima and AP Hakone Maru at Legaspi.

7 Radar Calibration Unit Swordfish attacked ships at Singora. AP Chihaya Maru missed. AP Huso Maru hit by eight 3 inch No 1 Rockets. Heavy damage. 154 troop cargo casualties, 3 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost.

38 Kates put 4 torpedoes into DD Alwyn at Molokai - fatally wounding her. She was another ship badly damaged yesterday during a fast transport mission to Lahaina. She unloaded troops there during the night and withdrew to Molokai.

The CVL force sent 17 Kates, 43 Me-109s and picked up 41 Zeros from KB to attack and sink DM Breese and Montgomery several hexes East of Hawaii. These vessels had planted mines during the night and were running for San Francisco. They shared a total of 5 torpedo hits and both sank before the end of the day.
21 Kates and 22 Vals followed up on the same mine warfare TF - attacking 3 more DM - but missing DM Ramsay entirely. Many sortees were wasted on mortally wounded Montgomery. But DM Gamble was hit by 2 bombs and 2 torpedoes - which is enough to insure sinking or scuttling.

25 Kates and 17 Vals put 5 bombs into DMS Zane at Molokai - yet another of the fast transports damaged the day before at Lahaina.

2 Nells missed CL Marblehead near Brunei. 10 Dutch Buffalos on CAP. Both bombers damaged.

18 Bettys out of Johnston Island attacked the Allied carrier TF one hex away - encountered 25 F4F-3s on CAP - and in spite of competent air opposition (shooting down no less than 5) - pressed home the attack with 13 machines. These attacked both CV Enterprise and CV Lexington in good order - but failed to hit either. A total of 8 bombers were lost and 2 more were damaged.

3 Bettys and 4 Ki-21s attacked and missed DD Scout and Thanet in the South China Sea. 1 Betty lost, 1 damaged.
19 Bettys, 12 Nells and 15 Ki-21s followed up - missing DD Scout again - but putting at torpedo and a 250 kg bomb into DD Thanet (heavy damage).

3 Bettys missed AS Canopus in the South China Sea.

10 Kates were unaable to locate DD Ward near Molokai - likely because she was already sunk.
11 more put a fish into DMS Trevor at the same location (heavy damage).

7 Ki-48s and 3 Ki-51s scored 5 airbase related hits at Hong Kong.

68 Nells and 24 Bettys struck Singapore. 25 Buffalos on CAP. 7 Nells lost, 14 damaged, 1 Betty lost, 3 damaged.
4 Buffalos lost to defensive fire, 2 damaged. 17 Allied casualties, 65 airbase related hits.

The afternoon air turn began with a bomber raid on Aparri as mysterious as the gigantic sweep of the same location in the morning: I guess he feared a forwar air station - at a point there is no air support and virtually no way to get any there - exposed to immediate attack from the sea and maximum enemy air sortee rates. 88 JNAF bombers of two types and 41 JAAF bombers of two types caused two runway hits - whose only impact will be to slightly impair the use of the airfield by the Japanese!! Well - an even larger impact is the loss of supply points to mount this raid and the sweep.

KB sent 136 Kates and 38 Vals escorted by 56 Zeros "downtown" to Pearl Harbor. These were mainly on an airfield surpression raid - and they succeeded brilliantly (if unnecessairily - the fields were entirely down and going to stay that way for some days). They also managed to put a bomb into AR Rigel - which starts the game damaged - and which was badly hurt yesterday by air strikes as well (she is likely to sink or be scuttled). Other ships in port were missed entirely. 23 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost, 109 other hits of which 87 were runway hits. 11 Allied fighters of two types on CAP destroyed in the air (all of them LRCAP out of Molokai). 3 Vals lost - 8 Kates lost and 14 more damaged.

PBYs out of Palmyra and Canton Island located the Japanese replenishment force - retiring West from Johnston Island - and 4 A-20s attempted a long range strike on one of them - AO Ken'yo Maru - but missed her. These ships might be headed for Kwajalein or Enewetok - both of which have fuel - but they should not need fuel yet - having had no chance to offload their cargo. Perhaps he was trying to keep them safe - but in that case he has a problem - they are in striking range of Halsey's carrier force - and not in range of any sort of air cover or fleet support.

2 P-35s missed CA Ashigara at San Fernando.
15 more plus 13 P-40Es attacked the CVE force East of Luzon (San Butai). 32 Me-109s - aided by a single Pete - on CAP were entirely up to their task - and no attackers penetrated. 3 P-35s and 3 P-40s were shot down.
14 more P-40s did better at Aparri - where in spite of all the air sortees there was no CAP (it is within LRCAP range of Formosa). They attacked three ships - missing 2 DD but putting 8 50 cal hits into CL Isuzu.

The Allied carrier force sent a follow up raid into the ships of Johnston Island. The strike leader selected the minor task element that had broken off from the main TF - including only BC Amagi and the one escort available.

42 SBDs, 14 SB2U-2s, 13 TBDs and 6 F4F-3s came in. [Most of the fighters remain on CAP. Half of the TBDs are on ASW Patrol. The two VS squadrons of SBDs are on 40 per cent recon - and flying at only 6000 feet - while the rest of the dive bombers are at 14000 feet.] These managed to put a further 20 thousand pound bombs into BC Amagi - along with three torpedoes - and she sank by the end of the day. DE Wakatake also took a torpedo - and probably also flooded out (or will - it is too far to the nearest bases able to help - which are Kwajalein and Enewetok - both of which are too small to have a good shot at saving a badly damaged ship).

A fairly strong combined (ie multi base) Allied air strike came in on Kota Bahru - 3 Swordfish - 9 Blenheim Is - 5 Vildebeeste - with 9 British Buffalo's in escort. Still three seaplane fighters on CAP - 1 a pre production Rufe from BB Yamato. This time the strike came in on the transport TF - not the well protected surface action group. CL Kuma, CLAA Katori and AP Awajisan Maru all missed entirely. ML Mogamigawa Maru hit by 4 rockets from the Swordfish, setting her on fire. These 3 inch ASW rockets were the very first air launched rocket weapons and prooved so useful they were soon adapted for other aircraft and other missions IRL.
2 Blenheims straggled in immegiately afterward - covered by 9 Buffalos - and missed CLAA Katori again.

18 P-40Bs - inspired no doubt by the example of the P-40Es that struck at Aparri - strafed and hit DD Asakaze 4 times - but only with 30 cal rounds - no bomb hits.

The still operating airfield at Johnston Island sent out a final strike to punish the carriers tormenting it in the form of 3 Bettys. These were easily discouraged by the 20 F4F-3s on CAP - and when one was shot down the other two bugged out. So Halsey got away with his somewhat daring raid - although he lost the element of surprise he had by being in an unknown location. Now the enemy knows perfectly well where he is - one hex due East of Johnston Island.

JNAF aircraft based ashore on Saipan found and engaged AO Robert L Barnes and MSW Penguin in escort near Wake Island. The MSW took 3 bomb hits, the tanker 2 more. The MSW has heavy damage and will probably have to be scuttled.

USN sub Trout - left as a guard at Midway - detected, attacked and hit CL Yura with torpedoes - but these failed to detonate.
Yura - undismayed by the attack - went on to shell Midway - causing 19 casualties, 1 gun lost and 2 runway hits.

4 USN PT units (of 3 vessels each) ran in on 10 transports (6 AP and 4 AK) at Lahaina - scoring but a single 50 cal hit on AP Izumo Maru. In spite of that - there were 10 Japanese troop casualties - how do you do that with a single half inch bullet? I guess it made something blow up on board. The transports - modified mostly with fine 3 inch guns and 25mm - managed to hit one PT unit 16 times, probably fatally damaging it - and another twice.

I-6 - off the US West coast - detected, shelled, torpedoed and sank AK Bingera.

I-7 - off the Southern tip of India - had the timerity to attack an ASW TF hunting her!!! She also sank MSW Lucknow and Rampur - with torpedoes.

PC unit Bellatrix and Canopus missed RO-41 near Merak/Serang - that is - in the Sunda Strait.
PC unit Beneb and Gemma did no better on the same target.

Undefended Legaspi was captured by an SNLF.

4575 crack Japanese troops captured Rabaul on the first assault from the 1829 defenders. 6:1 odds Fort Level 3 - this is a bit unusual and very well done - with the ground troops supported by naval gunfire. 77 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 1300 Allied casualties, 6 guns lost, 44 vehicles lost. Lark Force Battalion retreated, the composite base force surrendered.

The Japanese ground units at Wuchang/Wuhan - no doubt too demoralized from their failed ground assault yesterday - bombarded instead - causing 2 Chinese casualties and 1 gun lost.

Japanese deliberate attack failed to capture Guam at 1:1 odds. 7 Japanese casualties, 1 vehicle lost. 8 Allied casualties, 1 vehicle lost. The Guam Insular Force - which includes a tiny number of Marines and a company of militia - did better than might be expected albiet only vs two naval landing parties.

65th Brigade - a somewhat surprising elite unit (its commander had little expectation for his green troops) - captured Aparri with the 9655 troops ashore after one day - from the 401 Filipinos (led by a US officer) - in the defending battalion. 15 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 103 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost. A whopping 352:1 odds. The Allies retreated the wrong way - to Loaog - instead of down the Ilagan valley - as I would prefer.

13999 Japanese ashore captured San Fernando from 7138 Allies at San Fernando. An Tank Regiment and an aritllery unit were all that made it - somewhat like history - when the position fell before defenses were properly in place. This is where the enemy came ashore IRL - then turning right and coming down Highway 1 and the RR - which are about 50 yards apart - taking Linguyan (a city) by land. We have to see what can be done to stop that? 37 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 26 Allied casualties, 1 vehicle lost.

Undefended Kavieng captured by ground assault. The K force unit embarked during the previous night - and is in route to Nauru Island - which has lots of supplies and support - but no ground defense.

Undefended Hollandia captured by ground assault.

Allied ground bombardment at Kota Bahru was ineffective.

Allied ground bombardment at Midway caused 11 Japanese casualties.

The tiny village of Manokwari in the "head" of the New Guinea monster was captured - being undefended - not sure why he wants it? The island of Biak nearby is a better position IMHO.

17 000 Allies - elements of 6th Amphibious Division - failed to capture Midway in a shock attack from 2700 defenders - a base force and a Marine Defense Battalion. 391 Japanese casualties, 6 guns lost. 75 Allied casualties, 3 guns lost.

Japanese ground bombardment (??) at Lahaina was ineffective. This revealed only 2633 Allies ashore facing already 6620 Japanese - but the defenders have mountains. Not many of the reinforcements made it ashore apparently.

Undefended Tarawa fell to shock attack.

After two days of action - the only thing resembling a captial ship lost is BC Amagi - a very unusual thing in EBO (where it is normal to lose 4 - 7 BB of the United States Fleet - and often a carrier or two of the USN). Halsey's carrier force - in spite of having revealed its position - is in a position to move in several directions - and is a threat to the Japanese SLOC. Landings have cost a reasonable number of ships - and some air units working up have yet to be heard from in that regard. The entire United States Fleet not only survives undamaged - it appears it will escape as a body. Allied warships in the Far East are nearly assembled at Brunei - under air cover - and at Kendari - also with air cover. The enemy is well ashore in Luzon and Malaya - but the ground defenses are not yet defeated. Chinese forces are still advancing to combat - and will be a rude shock in due course. It does not get too much better than this for the Allies facing the Japanese onslaught - which is more or less as big as Allied fears made it seem IRL.

Note from Foreign Minister Molotov to Foreign Minister Togo

Note we have numbers of merchant ships and submarines in transit of the Kuril Islands. Under international law - the right of nonbellegerent passage exists between nations not at war. However - wartime practice for armed ship and ASW patrols is such that (ie. WITP hard code is such that) if patrols are mounted - there will be attacks. To avoid incidents - patrols should be stood down during this transit. While occasional transits by single merchant ships and tankers to the port on Kamchatka will occur later - this is the only mass transit - and the only time a major attack on many ships might occur. From now on the bulk of these ships will feed Ul Kel at the tip of Siberia and Kamchatka out of Canadian Vancouver. They will NOT carry any Allied military units or supplies or fuel or oil or resources (that is - no cargo for the Allies of any sort) to any Allied base - only Soviet cargo will be carried. Unless and until Japan becomes interested in a campaign in Alaska and the Aleutians - or the Allies decide to mount an offensive from there - there should be minimal risk of trouble if the patrols in the Kuril Islands are range limited not to come within one hex of the port on Kamchatka. When patrols of longer range are required - we can go over to a system of notice of transit to that port - so searches can be mounted even in that case most of the time - and of course - transit won't happen at a time Allied forces are detected in the area that might be of concern. Comrad Stalin has directed full and proactive disclosure to Japan of any information that might be useful to insure/assure there is no foundation for concern that Soviet military or maritime assets might in any way, directly or indirectly,
aid the Allied war effort. We are not permitted to collect naval intelligence in this area except in the immediate coastal defense zone (one hex from any port) - where local commanders have authority to automatically engage any and all targets (that is - patrols, attack aircraft, escort aircraft, submarines and PT boats are always set to engage in these hexes - to attrit inbound invasion of bombardment task forces).
We also regard the Northern Sea of Othosk as a "Russian lake" and reserve the right to patrol it - but are not doing so at this time (due to lack of assets in theater).

Having detected a lack of ASW attacks I had Shark send his location file. Sure enough - he is using one with zero values in the range fields for ASW weapons. Well - ASW DOES occur when a ship closes to zero range - but never mind - code requires a range to work. So we use values

Pattern x2 small DC 500
Pattern x4 small DC 600
Pattern x8 small DC 900
Pattern x14 small DC 1000
3in A/S Mortar 150
Pattern x2 large DC 600
Pattern x4 large DC 600
Pattern x8 large DC 1000
Pattern x13 large DC 1000
Hedgehog 300
Squid 600
Mousetrap 300
Mark 24 ASW Torpedo 600
15cm DC Projector 500

These are either the diameter of the pattern effective area or the effective range of an ahead throwing weapon

We have attempted to modify the imbedded device file in the save game file to these - which are RHS standard values.

At the same time - having determined our combined 60 kg bomb or DC seems to work - with a range value - we assigned range values to all bombs - corresponding to inverse square law - and modifying AP so it is 2/4 of GP (due to less explosive) - giving these experimental values (NOT in other RHS forms - yet) - these may be thought of as a sort of standardized blast radius - and are intended to let the bombs be used vs submarines - but IF range is used in land combat - may also help values of results to better relate to the relative size and type of bomb - and we will test these values in this game

50 kg GP Bomb 18
MXY7 Ohka 11 40
1000 lb AP Bomb 36
30 kg GP Bomb 13
60 kg GP Bomb or DC 20
100 lb GP Bomb 17
250 lb GP Bomb 27
500 lb GP Bomb 38
1000 lb GP Bomb 54
2000 lb GP Bomb 76
4000 lb GP Bomb 107
100 kg GP Bomb 25
250 kg AP Bomb 27
800 kg AP Bomb 47
2000 lb AP Bomb 51
100lb ICB Cluster 10
400lb ICB Cluster 20
Atomic Bomb 10000
500 kg AP Bomb 38

Repairing a file is not ideal. Reports from the past indicated problems - and we seem to have some.

Only three problems I could see - two RTAF observation bomber units appeared too soon - and an Allied recon unit appeared too soon. We can refrain from using them until the right time.

We will proceed with the test - tentatively - but I think it will be fine.

9 December 1941 (Hawaii) 10 December (Far East) Both (near Johnston Island and Midway Island)

Japanese TF 84 encountered mines at Kona (the Big Island) - but failed to hit any.

CD guns at Kota Bahru fired 8 shots - hitting CLAA Katori twice - setting it on fire.
20 Japanese ground casualties to beach defenses.

Japanese TF 98 landed more troops at Rabaul - 42 casualties.

USN sub Thresher was detected near Kona (the Big Island) - and engaged by 11 escorts plus CL Jintsu and BB Huyga and Fuso (in their Fujimoto form). No hits.
Later USN sub Gudgeon was detected, attacked and missed by DE Hokaze in the same hex.
Pre dawn - Gudgeon tried to shoot one of her tormentors - missed - and got hit by their counterattack.

Ro-43 shelled (4 hits) and torpedoed (1 hit) AK Mapia in Malacca Strait.

USN sub Narwhal missed 2 APs at Lahaina. 4 DD/DE missed her in turn.

IJN sub I-172 tried to attack one or more of 6 DD near Molokai - but missed. They all missed her in turn.

CA Salt Lake City led 6 DD into the anchorage at Johnston Island. 6 hits - 2 each on the CA, DD Lamson and DD Dunlap. Only Lamson on fire. 48 hits on 3 Japanese ships - plus DE Wakatake sunk from previous damage - also AP Monji Maru on fire from previous damage. DD Natsugumo and DE Kuretake sunk by 44 8 inch and 5 inch shell hits. DD Yamagumo took 4 hits and is on fire.

Allied night naval bombardment at Wuhan was ineffective.

S-36 was attacked by CL Isuzu and 5 DD at Aparri - but all missed.

Ro-32 put two fish into AMC Kanimbla in the Malacca Strait. Already damaged from attacks the previous day - she surely sank or will sink.

Continuing landings at Lahaina cost 255 Japanese casualties.

Continuing landings at Kota Bahru cost 85 Japanese casualties. 6 CD shots fired but all missed.

Continuing landings at Rabaul cost 37 Japanese casualties.

12 CD shots fired at Lahaina hit ML Ginyo Maru - acting as a fast transport. 10 troop cargo casualties.

IJN sub I-4 put a fish into AK Don Yisidro off the US West Coast. The AK is on fire with heavy damage.

IJN sub Ro-29 was detected and attacked but missed by unspecified ASW (AVD Poolster?) forces near Java.
Later in the night she attacked and hit the Poolster with a torpedo.

Dutch sub KXII was attacked and hit by CL Kuma, 1 PC, 1 MSW, 1 DE and 3 DD - at Kota Bahru.

USN sub Narwhal attacked and missed AP Kensyu Maru near Lahaina. 2 DD and 2 DE counterattacked but also missedl

IJN sub I-2 - near LA - foolishly attacked 13 ASW units. She scored one torpedo hit on DD Talbot - but was hit in turn by the counterattack mountd by the rest of the force.

The day turn began with an attack on Yennan Central China by 9 Ki-51s escorted by 5 Ki-27s in company with a Ki-46 recon plane.
No CAP. 9 Japanese casualties and 2 runway hits.

44 Ki-48s out of Cambodia attcked Kota Bahru - destroying 1 Hudson on the ground - causing 99 casualties, 5 vehicles lost - 14 airbase related hits.

24 Bettys and 2 Ki-48 recon planes came in on Clark AAF. 20 P-40s of 2 types plus 8 P-43 light fighters of Philippine Air Force on CAP.
1 P-40 shot down. 4 Bettys lost, 3 more damaged. 1 Ki-48 damaged. 4 hits to airbase related targets.

6 Vengeance came in on Kota Bharu armed with 1000 pound bombs. 2 hits scored on BB Mutsu. 9 Zeros, 2 Petes and 1 Rufe on CAP - but they were too high to engage the bombers. 3 of the Vengeance were lost.
15 Blenheim IV followed up immediately - destroying 2 Zeros - 5 bombers shot down - 2 more damaged. CLAA Katori and AK Nissyo Maru were both missed.

2 P-35s straffed and missed AK Lima Maru at Aparri (Luzon).

3 A-20B Boston missed AP Hakone Maru at Legaspi at the other end of the island.

10 Kates out of Saipan put 4 bombs into AO Robert L Barnes East of Guam. It is heavily damged from today and previous air attacks combined.

12 Ki-21s did a reconnissance in force of Kamen Amur Province - escorted by 9 Zeros. No casualties.

4 Su-2s reconned Mutankiang Manchukuo in the same area. Also no casualties.

24 Ki-36, 8 (???) B6N2 Jill, 14 Kates and 4 B5N2 Q (ASW Kates ???) caused 139 casualties and 10 airbase hits at Pucheng Central China.
The MAD equipped Kate might be a preproduction model (rationalizing) - but the Jills shold be fixed = converted back to Kates.
14 Claudes attacked Pucheng next - but failed to do damage.

RTAF V-935s flew recon over Tavoy, Burma. These planes are early and should be grounded for a week or so.
Same for another flight of V-935s that flew over Alor Star Malaya.

83 Nells and 12 Bettys attacked Singapore. 16 Buffalo on CAP. 2 bombers destroyed and 4 damaged. Here is an odd one: 5 Ki-43 destroyed - where did they come from and why don't they show up on escort? 7 Buffalo destroyed (all by bombers) and 2 damged. 1 Vildebeeste, 1 Catalina and 1 Blenheim destroyed on the ground. 38 airbase related hits.

80 Bettys and Nells led a raid on Baguio City. 130 Zeros flew escort. 3 recon Bettys came along. 36 Army Ki-48s and Ki-21s also came along. 1 Nell lost, 3 bombers damaged. 276 Allied casualties, 5 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost, 11 airbase related hits.

23 Ki-27s swept Laoag Luzon - but no CAP to engage.

59 SBDs raided Johnston Island. 105 Japanese casualties, 2 guns lost, 14 airbase related hits. No aircraft destroyed on the ground as intended either. 3 bombers destroyed, 3 damaged.

5 A-20s missed CA Achii and CA Ashigara at San Fernando. 2 Pete on CAP. No losses to either side.

2 Blenheims missed CLAA Yubari at Singora. No less than 7 Petes on CAP were ineffective.

USN sub S-37 at San Fernando (Luzon) was attacked - and missed - by 4 IJN DD.

IJN sub I-4 torpedoed AP US Grant off the Oregon coast. 34 troop cargo casualties.

IJN sub I-155 missed TK D.L. Kruithov near Australia.

IJN sub Ro-43 torpedoed TK Semirs near Java.

15 000 Japanese attacked 19 000 Allies at Kota Bahru. 1:1 odds, Fort Level 1. Forts reduced to Level 0.
266 Japanese casualties, 9 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 48 Allied casualties, 1 gun lost.

7 000 Japanese of the Imperial Guards Brigade attacked the reinforced (but demoralized by air strikes and troop losses at sea) defenses of Lahaina - which include the original base force (a CD unit with minimal air support elements) and part of a RCT totaling 2666 troops - 1:1 odds - Fort Level 0 - 25 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost - 40 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. Loss ratio indicates a weak Allied position - in spite of mountain terrain.

Note we were fooled by transports in the Molokai hex yesterday. Apparently they fled there - or were a deception - and we ran in a cruiser destroyer TF on Molokai - to prevent an effective landing. Instead - those ships went to Lahaina - and we should have raided it - but because we misread the intel - we missed the chance to sink them before offloading.

Undefended Kona on the Big Island fell to an SNLF assault at 26:1 odds. 2632 troops landed.

4208 Japanese at Rabaul assaulted 1842 Allies - 2:1 odds - Fort Level 2 - Fortifications reduced to 1. 31 Japanese casualties, 1 gun lost. 4 Allied casualties.

The Japanese rail head at Nanchang saw an even fight between equal numbers of troops (41 000 on each side) with Japan trying to eject the Chinese - 0:1 odds - 2229 Japanese casualties, 65 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost - 334 Chinese casualties, 2 guns lost. This was my intent - attacking is difficult - doubly so at points where supply is marginal - and a Japanese attack here was foolish on logistic grounds.

He figured that out at Wuchang - where only bombardment was done - 16 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.

Two naval landing parties totaling 1400 captured Guam taking only 19 casualties. 1207 Allied casualties, 3 Guns lost, 141 vehicles lost. The Guam Insular Force surrendered - but took two days to do so - which isn't bad - partly because he diverted air power to hunt ships instead of ground support. There is nothing the Allies can do about Guam at this stage.

22 000 Japanese attacked 21 000 Chinese at Hangchow near Shanghai - 0:1 odds - 1000 Japanese casualties, 23 guns lost - 143 Chinese casaualties, 3 guns lost, 1 vehicle lost. The Chinese were lucky with the die roll - and have not yet brought up all available forces. The Chinese lack the logistics to attack - until they take the rail system and feed this position from farther back.

Having failed to screen Canton - two Chinese Field Armies marched right into town - and 49,999 Japanese tried to eject them - difficult in urban terrain. 0:1 odds vs only 13 000 Chinese. 1900 Japanese casualties, 51 guns lost. 15 Chinese casualties, 1 gun lost.

In North China at Yenku - 213 000 Japanese easily ejected a Cavalry Brigade and a minor infantry unit - 21:1 odds - 460 Japanese casualties,
8 guns lost - 597 Chinese casualtiews, 14 guns lost. However - this attack probably means he won't send those troops where they might help him farther South - and we have actual Field Armies in route to reassault. Meanwhile - he consumed supplies on air strikes and full blown ground assault for a fifth of a million men.

Still farther North - two Field Armies had marched into Tatung down the rump rail spur - and 9000 Japanese achieved 1:1 odds on the 13 000 Chinese - who are not in good shape supply wise. 152 Japanese casualties, 5 guns lost, 40 Chinese casualties, 4 guns losst. This is acceptable loss ratio for the Chinese - the Japanese must do better than that or lose in a battle of attrition - which is appropriate in China.

Two brigades reinforced by an artillery unit invested Singora - but did not attack. Instead - somewhat disorganized from landings - 29 000 Japanese attempted a shock attack on the less than 7000 Allies - who are weak and understrength. 0:1 odds. 959 Japanese casualties, 35 guns lost, 2 vehicles lost. 197 Allied casualties, 2 guns lost. The Allies were lucky - but made their own luck. A deliberate attack would have been better for the Japanese - but a shock attack more characteristic - and also doctrinal for just landed troops.

Allied ground bombardment at Kota Bahru was ineffective.

Allied ground bombardment at Rabaul was ineffective.

Allied ground bombardment at Lahaina was ineffective.

As you can see - things went well for the Allies - and we have a problem with later war aircraft appearing. Less obvious - we have a problem that air bases where planes arrive all think all the planes for the entire war are there - and won't repair most of the planes actually present. So we will restart. Test 13C will be a variant of EBO - called MEBO - which is almost identical.

Shark's comments, in part:

Restart is fine.

I learned a few things playing an allied player that would actually defend and not turtle up in out of reach places. Taking too much in the opening turn is not advisable.

We did learn something. If the allied player will stand and fight an overconfident japanese player he can do a lot of damage. Your ships at PH got away because I chose to cover my transports and not agressively go after your units, which was the trade off.
