I want to dive into PBM, but I absolutely hate sitting and watching the combat animations and combat summaries. I play without them and simply use the various reports produced instead.

I know that settings have to be the same between the two PBM players, and my question is does this include combat animations and combat summaries?

Do I have to find an opponent who also plays without combat summaries and combat animations, or can we each have our own settings for those switches? Just for reference, here are the settings I use (and folder 'SOUND' is renamed 'noSOUND'):

quote:

Realism Options

Fog of War = Yes
Advanced Weather Effects = Yes
Allied Damage Control = Yes
Player Def. Upgrades = Yes
Historical First Turn = No
December 7th Surprise = Yes
Reliable USN Torpedoes = No

Combat Reports = Yes
Auto Sub Ops = No
TF Move Radius = No
Plane Move Radius = No
Set All Facilities To Expand At Start = No

AFAIK, only Realism Options and Game Options have to be the same.

AFIAK Realism and Game options are set in stone from turn 1 for both players. Preferances can be set to whatever the players wish and has no effect on the game (or shouldnt) I'm in a PBEM game and tinkered with preferances and its playing out just fine.

good luck in PBM , makes the game even better !

Bad news, guys. I just ran the first turn replay. In spite of all my settings to the contrary (see post #1 this thread) I was treated to all manner of combat animations and summaries.

I tried the hotkey (F5) and received the message that 'combat animations are locked'. Hitting the Esc key might have shortened the pain a bit, but frankly I do not want to spend the next 2 to 3 years hitting the Esc key to get through the animations and summaries.

Can anybody help out with this?

The Realism Options, Game Options, and Preferences should be the same for both players. Please note, it is the Japanese player who selects the options, and once set, they can not be changed during the game.
So basically, yes, you need to find an opponent who agrees on the options. For more info, check out the PBEM post in the sticky section above by Admiral Dadman.

Hope this helps.

Note that it appears that the hot fix patches can/will change settings. My PBEM game had the auto subs turned on.

ckammp,

Thanks for the quick reply. That's basically what I did. But upon hearing from knowledgeable folks that the animations, et al could be different I left that part out of my 'opponents wanted' posting. Obviously my opponent prefers animations (since they're on), and he put ~3 days into his first move. So, it's not like I feel I can just ask "how about changing that!", if you know what I mean.

I'm hoping that someone out there has a secret decoder ring and can help me finagle my way through this so that we can sort of have our cake and eat it too.
