I don't believe I've ever had one of these squadrons before. What is an "instructor" and how does one (a pilot I presume) become one?

Training groups allow many more pilots per plane. The instructors are high in inspiration and leadership.

Yes, the trainees will learn fast since he is so inspiring. However, he is not a good combat leader.

All those guys are already tied up in regular squadrons that are training pilots.

No, those are the possible commanders. The ones with the * are pilots - but not necessarily of the type of plane that the group has. (Fighter, bomber, et cetera.) So WO Saito would be an excellent training leader.

Nope. He was a combat leader. High aggression but low air skill.

Sorry, but I'm telling you, he's the actual commander, the only way you can see who it is is to pretend you're going to replace him. I have several flying commanders like that who I picked and they arrived and were activated, but it still shows "staff officer" in charge. When I get a chance I'll find one.

Maybe it's one of those "housekeeping" things where the unit screen only updates the info at the end of the turn, after all the combats.

Since they seem to training efficiently I'm going to leave him as commander until I want them to be a combat squadron.

Yes, that's the list of possible commanders I could pick from. Look at who it says at the top is the current commander.

Could "instructor" mean a 70+ EXP pilot in the reserve pool (who would train the other pilots faster)?

Cheers,
CB

Instructors come from pilots in TRACOM. Find some pilots with experience of 81+ and move them to TRACOM. In a few turns they will be available for use as instructors. They will help train your pilots very fast.

That explains it, I only have IJN pilots in Tracom at the moment.
