Do you know if ANZAC forces can be awarded honours on a non-individual level ?

I.e. can an Army/Division/Brigade be awarded an honour, and which one(s) ?

The short answer is Yes.

This link should answer all your questions.

But, given that Queen Elizabeth is still our Sovereign, we also carry on the tradition of "Battle Honours" and "Regimental Colours". See link below of the 10/27th battalion, Royal South Australian Regiment as an example:

http://www.defence.gov.au/army/10_27rsar/history_files/battlehonours.htm

My personal feeling is that these traditions carry much more weight than the more recent unit Citation system.

Up I agree with you stubby. But having said that there are a few RAR Battalions getting around with US Presidential unit citations (from Vietam and Korea IIRC) and it must be said that the units did receive said citations deserved them.

Hi,

for ww2, using the www.diggerhistory.info website, I found the following:

The "who was where" part of the site:

http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-conflicts-periods/ww2/pages-2aif-cmf/who-was-there.htm

helps identify the different battles and campaigns honours there:

http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-conflicts-periods/ww2/pages-2aif-cmf/battle-honours.htm

So, if I understand correctly, the 7th Brigade who served in the New Guinea Force in the SWPAC, was composed of the 9th, 25th, and 61st Battalions, and received the following honours:

South-West Pacific 1942-5 Theatre Hounours
Milne Bay (26 Aug.-7 Sep. 1942) Battle Honours
Liberation of Australian New Guinea; 18 Sep. 1943- 8 Aug. 1945 Theatre Hounours
Artillery Hill 18 Dec. 1944 Battle Honours (for the 9th only)
Pearl Ridge 30 Dec. 1944 Battle Honours (for the 25th only)
Puriata River 24 Jan.-26 Feb. 1945 Battle Honours
Mosigetta 2 -15 Feb. 1945 Battle Honours
Darara 16-19 Feb. 1945 Battle Honours (for the 25th only)
Slater's Knoll 28 Man-6 Apr. 1945 Battle Honours (for the 25th only)
Hongorai River 17 Apn-7 May 1945 Battle Honours (for the 9th only)

Is that the way it should be understood ?

Yup at a quick glance that looks about right. The Battalion was the core unit of the AIF (1st and 2nd). The men tended to identify much more with that than the larger organization and this still carrys through to today when the old diggers march on ANZAC day, they march in their Battalion units rather than Brigade or even division formations. But having said that there was still a lot of esprit de corps for the divisional formations......the 9th Div of the 2nd AIF were always known as the "Magnificent 9th" as an example.
During the later stages of the first world war, 1918, the sign-up rate for the 1st AIF in France was so low (unlike other countries Austalia's army was made up of nothing but volunteers) that the army had decided to break up some of the battalions that were under strength and send the men to other units.........this led units to almost mutiny (and some if fact did). They could face the horrors of the trenches but dispanding their battalions was something that the men could not face.
