PHILIPPINES

I'm pissed, just slighty pissed off. Bombers on AF strike fly regulary while those on ground attack didn't attack. And this is not a first time. What annoys me most is that this happends when i order my LCU to attack enemy at the Manila. Phew!

Do the bombers on ground attack have at least 50% of their TOE strength in undamaged aircraft? If not, they will not attack (an undocumented feature).

Hey it is nice to see a bunch of my future opponents here

Seriously, thanks for your advices. Amiral, you could be right and i will watch it carefully.

Lt. Calley, no this is not a case. All my groups bombers, fighters etc all in perfect condition - always (I'm airforce fanboy). No less pilots in ac group than ac... etc... I start to think that is some hidden hardcoded rule(s) in the game... oh i'm getting paranoid.

ok, back to the bussiness (sp?)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/18/42

SRA

I can't explain why i love small victories, found them even more enjoyable than strategic ones. Well, maybe I'm just small sneaky Bastard (anyone watched The New Statesman?) who is delight when he outsmart smart guy

Andy lost cadres and 12 precious Coronado(s) (hm, could it be a whole unit?). I admit i was distrustful about performace of unsupplied NLF...

Ground combat at Morotai

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 618 troops, 4 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 574 troops, 8 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 4 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Morotai base !!!

Allied aircraft losses
PB2Y Coronado: 6 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
58 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Allied ground losses:
631 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Here is a screenie of Java and Sumatra. No special reason for that - i just wanted to show you a traffic there and ASW effort. Andy is busy with evacuating cadres, while I'm runing rare material conwoys, redeploying SC ships and - bringing some more reinforcements.

No plane(s) destroyed during naval bombardment of Banjarmasin (944 casualties reported, guns lost 15, vehicles lost 5)- i'm one step behind Andy in this case. They are now in Australia probably and i guess that they are heavies (no ops losses during transfer from Sumatra to SW Borneo)... so the question is where and when they will strike?

If only i know would prepare a strong CAP..

PHILIPPINES

Now look. Same planes, same numbers, same ac groups - only difference is they are all set on AF or port attack. And yes...

Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
C5M Babs x 5
Ki-21 Sally x 122
Ki-48 Lily x 42
Ki-49 Helen x 24

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
189 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 7
Runway hits 38
Port hits 3
Port fuel hits 1
Port supply hits 1

CHINA

Ichang is abandoned by enemy and my forces capture it. Pretty quiet these days in the theatre, but that will change soon. I'm waiting for reinfocements in Kwelin-Kweiyang crossroad.

*raises hand* And I'm the one who wrote that. That bit of information came from the developers about the time the 1.3 patch was released, which loosened some of the restrictions on Ground Attack missions. (I think it was 1.3, been a long time.) Which all came about as a result of a stink that was being raised about how hard it was to get Ground Attack missions to fly. (IIRC I started that too during one of my *ahem* discussions with Mr.Frag.)

So, you can blame me for knowing that particular tidbit. (Although I refuse to take responsibility for it existing in the first place! )

Getting paranoid about the programming just means you've been playing the game for more than a day.

First raw material conwoy (60K oil, 40K resources) arrived in Tokyo.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/19 & 02/20/42

Another boring turn, but don't blame me;). After initial aggresive defence, Andy become a perfect example of brave "Sir Robin". Example: After my sweep on Dacca he stood down all fighters. My answer was sending unescorted Bettys!? on air raid on Dacca - 4 Dauntless were destroyed on the ground.. My recon reported no enemy planes at Dacca today:...

But I'm not fooled, he will strike when you don't expect at all... damn.

Yesterday another sub repored sunk - K XIV (S of Amboina). She was damaged before, in Manila area. I've raided Kweiyang AF and destroyed 4 enemy bombers on the ground (ILs and SB-2). He really doesn't care about Chinese airforce... (using them as decoy, rather than having his LCUs bombed from the air, i guess)

Bulk of my army arrived in hex N of Soerbaja and deliberate attack finally worked. However two Dutch rtgs withdrew before attack to the Soerbaja, while one Dutch rtg + 2 BF (defeated units) withdrew in Madieon.

That's was for yesterday. I finally have found some time and available units for Miri, and deliberate attack is ordered.

Enemy planes spoted at Tomini (one of Celebes bases). I send few TF forces to all those tiny bases on the island- don't like idea of airlift.

CHINA

Despite help from Army bombers, deliberate attack failed. Grrrr... Chinese there must be veterans now...I will for recuperation and reinfocements (700 AP) and try shock attack. It that not works, well, the China campaign is over.

Ground combat at 42,37

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 230410 troops, 2612 guns, 378 vehicles

Defending force 146616 troops, 671 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
6137 casualties reported
Guns lost 79
Vehicles lost 6

Allied ground losses:
4368 casualties reported
Guns lost 73

PHILIPPINES

The total number of Allied troops rapidly going down, even when i don't attack. I think that in last 2 or 3 days 3000 men are missing. Does it mean that he is finally starved? (experts?)

Again double update... yeah, lots of things happend

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/21 & 02/22/42

SRA

I captured Miri with minimal damage (3). Andy sent his B-17s to attack Batavia (from Bali), but as i expected these monsters ends their journey in Darwin. Hm, how can i defend succesfully? There are plenty of targets for him: Koepang, Amboina, Sorong and Kendari. I can't cover everything although two Zero daitai will reinforce southern SRA in turn or two.

I'm little bit behind my schedule for conquering Java (end of February). Madeion captured and Dutch units withdrew towards southest base in the Java (bah, cant recall the name of it).

Ground combat at Madioen

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 9651 troops, 25 guns, 248 vehicles

Defending force 2701 troops, 16 guns, 1 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Madioen base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
19 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Allied ground losses:
88 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Plenty of subs reported at Soerbaya hex plus 15 enemy units (30 K) - i'm very interested what will i find in Soerbaja. My divisions gathering one hex north of Soerbaja (Imp, 21, 5, 18th div plus eng rtgs) so i will be able to capture Soerbaja soon.

All bases on the Celebes are captured.

Ground combat at Tomini

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 1193 troops, 7 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 226 troops, 2 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Tomini base !!!

Allied aircraft losses
Catalina I: 1 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
21 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
279 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

I'm quite suprised how Andy manage to transport units via airso fast. Not so many transports in PI area or my intel. is exremely bad. Four cadres destroyed here: 101th (but unfortunatly Philippine one not American airborne:)), PAF Aviation and... ups i forget...

PACIFIC

Troops unloading at Rabaul. Deliberate attack scheduled for tomorrow. One small NLF is sent to capture all northern Guinea bases.

PHILIPPINES

What i can do here? Ok, Manila will fall before Christmas, i can promise!

Ground combat at Manila

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 178848 troops, 1644 guns, 457 vehicles

Defending force 60490 troops, 412 guns, 160 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese ground losses:
3254 casualties reported
Guns lost 102
Vehicles lost 11

Allied ground losses:
1598 casualties reported
Guns lost 29
Vehicles lost 2

CHINA

Andy thought he is strong enough to attack my paras at Kunming. Good, i'm blocading production of supply there for another few turns. And supply to units at notorious crossroad have to travel via longer route - from Chungking to Kweiyang directly.

Ground combat at Kunming

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 15197 troops, 103 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 3898 troops, 25 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 4 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
82 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Allied ground losses:
439 casualties reported
Guns lost 22

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/25/42

sent Yamashiro TF to bombard Banjarmasin, where is the last stand of Dutch units from southern Borneo (650 casualties reported,Guns lost 1,Vehicles lost 1)

Jesselton occupied.

"Soerbaja Army" will arrive in Soerbaya in next few days. Maedion is now base for my ASW air force. Still short on air support here but more AS is on their way. Today ASW from M. recorded first hit on enemy subs - Snapper is hit with one 250kg bomb.

Six Hudsons attacked my transports at Rabaul (from PM) - no hits. I guess that B-17 are going from Australia to this area.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/26/42

SRA

Koepang is now fort level 3. NLF denied access to decimated enemy units (from Palembang) to Teloekbetoeng and throw them in jungle one hex NE.

CHINA & BURMA

I'm afraid that China is stalemate now. Shock attack did not worked, i get only 1-1 odds, but suffered big casaulties (down to 4200 AP). There is nothing i can do much, i'm afraid. One or two division more could be sent to crossroad, but that's all. I will also send several BF and move China Exp Army HQ to the hex, but i'm pretty demoralised...

Ground combat at 42,37

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 280682 troops, 3053 guns, 386 vehicles

Defending force 151079 troops, 687 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
9016 casualties reported
Guns lost 174
Vehicles lost 21

Allied ground losses:
3671 casualties reported
Guns lost 64

Lashio is recaptured, few decimated Chinese divisions are no match for my troops. I will try isolate them and force to surrender or throw them to the jungle (see map in previous post)

Ground combat at Lashio

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 14915 troops, 79 guns, 181 vehicles

Defending force 8628 troops, 49 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 5 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Lashio base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
21 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
679 casualties reported
Guns lost 17

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

PHILIPPINES

Andy again sending subs to Manila - SS-27 is hit with 3 bombs. Ground troops are again near 3000 AP, but i will wait before attack Manila because the weather (T-storms) will probably prevent Army bombers to help our army.

Just to mention, i'm training my fighters (Oscars and Nates) in Philippines and the China (app 6 groups).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/27/42

Three minelaying subs arrived on destination - they are assigned to mine Karachi port. And look what my beloved I-124 done!

Sub attack near Karachi at 21,3

Japanese Ships
SS I-124

Allied Ships
AP Van Cloon, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
(sinks!)

AP Westralia, Shell hits 3, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Sub attack near Karachi at 21,3

Japanese Ships
SS I-124

Allied Ships
AP Empire Attendant, Torpedo hits 1
probably dude, but hey, i like it!

Three attacks by I-124 in night phase! I'm thinking about send all subs as minelayers - they will probably attack juicy targets more than the ones on sub patrol duty. Bah!

TF 1028 encounters mine field at Karachi (21,3)

Allied Ships
AK St. Quentin, Mine hits 1, on fire
heh, this is just so delightful...

ASW effort is starting to pay off. SS-27 took another hit and finally sunk (at Manila). Three more subs reported in Manila waters. More pleasing news comes from the elite ASW force in the Bund sea.

Sub attack at 34,78

Japanese Ships
APD APD-39
APD APD-38
APD APD-37
APD APD-36
APD APD-35
APD APD-34
APD APD-33
APD APD-32
DD Yamagumo

Allied Ships
SS Triton, hits 2, on fire

Allied ground losses:
25 casualties reported
Chase will continue, I need to send Triton on the bottom with cadre!

I've ordered deliberate attack on Manila for tomorrow despite T-storms in the Philippines.Last turn weather was bad too but my bombers flew their duty (both on ASW and ground attack). Here is a bet: i'say that tomorrow my bombers would not attack. Any takers?

65th brigade arrived in Soerbaja. Bombardment attack ordered. Rest of the my troops have 46/60 miles - not sure if they will come in next turn.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/28/42

SRA

Bulk of "Soerbaja army" has arived in Dutch colonial capital - i have more than 2000 AP here. I expect that battle will be short because only Dutch units are present in the base (plenty of Dutch BF). I don't know what to do after capturing Soerbaja with defeated enemy units. They will withdraw to Malang.

I would like to let them in Malang for two reasons:

a) Andy will probably send more subs for evacuation
b) These units will prevent that already evacuated cadres in Australia become main units, and no reinforcing to full strengh will be allowed.

However, the bad thing here would be that Andy, in that case, could observe situation in Java and, as you probably recall, my secret "klokan-go" would be in danger. Hmmm....

Naval bombardment of Soerbaja went good. I've destroyed several Dutch fighters on the ground (total air losses this turn are 22-4) but none of 2 enemy ship in port were hit...

Naval bombardment of Soerabaja, at 22,65

Allied aircraft losses
Hawk 75A: 1 destroyed
Wirraway: 2 destroyed
CW-21B Demon: 2 destroyed
Brewster 339D: 3 destroyed

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga
BB Ise
BB Nagato

Allied ground losses:
3509 casualties reported
Guns lost 29
Vehicles lost 1

Airbase hits 17
Airbase supply hits 8
Runway hits 95

Meanwhile, i started Phew-go. The goal of that operation is to secure all bases between Soerbaja and Koepang. Japanese marines will assault on Lombok tomorrow and after capturing it, the Dutch will have only Bali and Pamakasan in their hands.

Oh, yes, didn't manage to sink Triton (ASW TF attacked her, but without success) but AP Westralia reported sunk in Karachi. Good, i was hoping only that my mines will give headache to Andy, and two sunk transports are bonus

CHINA

Last two turns chinese bombers attacked my units at crossroad and I have to show who is ruler of the China skies. Unfortunatly i've lost both damaged Oscars (ops).

Day Air attack on 22nd Division, at 42,37

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ib Oscar x 18

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 3
SB-2c x 7

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 2 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
IL-4c: 2 destroyed
SB-2c: 2 destroyed, 3 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
3 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

PHILIPPINES

I will ask Matrix staff if they can give me " A great soothsayer of the WiTP" title instead Matrix legion of merit, which i have right now. As I predicted the bombers did not flew yesterday (those on ASW duty rested too!). Or I am soothsayer (wizard...) or I'm just that good.

Anyway, i got 1-1 with deliberate attack. Disruption is too big for my taste so will wait few days and shock.

Ground combat at Manila

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 177274 troops, 1579 guns, 455 vehicles

Defending force 57724 troops, 361 guns, 156 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 0

Japanese ground losses:
2175 casualties reported
Guns lost 76
Vehicles lost 14

Allied ground losses:
1908 casualties reported
Guns lost 58
Vehicles lost 2

Ok, have some time to post my war industry overview:

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/01/42

SRA

My four divisions finished job quickly - Soerbaja has fallen into my greedy hands and defeated Dutch units withdrew to Malang. I've changed PP for my units, part of "Sorebaja army" will pursue the enemy while part will recuperate and will be assigned to other targets in the area (but only bde and SSD). Transports sent in Soerbaja...

Yes, logistical nightmare started. Klokan-go preparations will take some time but this is necessary.

Ground combat at Soerabaja

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 127096 troops, 1277 guns, 273 vehicles

Defending force 9330 troops, 99 guns, 20 vehicles

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 3

Japanese assault odds: 9 to 1 (fort level 3)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Soerabaja base !!!

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
CW-21B Demon: 6 destroyed
Wirraway: 4 destroyed
Brewster 339D: 1 destroyed
Hawk 75A: 1 destroyed

Japanese ground losses:
388 casualties reported
Guns lost 23
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
1392 casualties reported
Guns lost 37
Vehicles lost 2

Recording of the signing of the capitulation agreement.
On the left is Lt-General H. Ter Poorten.
The man scratching his nose is Lt-Col P.G. Mantel
Java, March 1942

Attack on Lombok was unsuccessful - got 0-1 odds and have to wait for supply and reinforcements.

Fast BB TF will bombard Darwin - unfortunatly enemy naval search locate them... oh, well..

OTHER THEATRES

... were pretty quiet.

CHINA - retaliation mission on Kweiyang - 4 enemy bombers destroyed on the ground.

PACIFIC - Dauntless attacked my sub on Noumea-Fiji sea route... hm, important conwoy heading to Noumea...

PHILIPPINES - still some units have 50 disruption. Bombers didn't fly, again....

all in all, pretty boring...

Hi Pauk, I notice your victory a while back in Singapore. Well done! Looks like you managed to mass up quite a bit of manpower for it. I took the opposite route in a PBEM I'm playing as Japan and only have a relatively few units sitting in Singapore. I was hoping to wear down enemy supplies to the point where I could score an easy victory, however, my opponent seems to be holding out even into the start of February. Has anyone you know of captured Singapore after simply wearing down enemy supplies there or is the only way to capture Singapore to just mass troops and charge?

Gary

old ideas are best - mass - move fast - strike hard

hi, I have to agree with Sneer....

here is how i see Jap position in first few months (IMPORTANT NOTICE: if you play with common house rules - no teleport invasions on turn one, no more than one port attack, no using paras as "blocade" for allied units....)

Japan has enough strengh to strike and win at one theatre (position) with blitzkrieg tactic.... If your opponent doesn't make too many mistakes you can't count you will achive blitz victories in all theatres....

Judging from my experience, i've outplayed Andy in Malaya because (he said me) he didn't expect using of 33th and 55th div in Malaya Campaign because 56th div was diverted to the PI. Ok, i easily conquered Singapore (but must to be mentioned that Andy had all units preparing on Johore from turn one and i bombarded JB with my BBs) but, as you will see in my next post i stuck in the PI (got 0-1 odds). I have 5 divisions there, and i expect to crush PI defence by the end of Feburary but it is not going to happend. Honestly, i have no idea what to do there....i supposed that allied units are without supply and they will be easy targets after i got 1-1 odds at deliberate attack.

I just don't understand ground combat.....

So, the bottom line is:

#1 you can't count that enemy will run out off supply
#2 if you think you need 2 divisions for certain base, and that is optimistic estimating (?), assign 4 divs for that goal!

(i appologize for bad english - and it become even worse when i try to answer after visit to the favourite pub)

Hi pauk,
It's not easy to leave defenders without supplies, even after months of air bombardment.
Manila is an urban hex, so defender gets a 4x defence bonus even with zero forts. Moreover, are you sure that your units regained fatigue and distruption from last attack?

My advices:
- initiate an air campaign against Manila, targeting airfield while your troops regain from distruption and fatigue.
- two or three days before your attack, switch some Air group to ground attack.
- do not attack if disruption and fatigue of your units are not below 30 (better below 15).
- Use only deliberate attack.

Bye.

if you get regular 1:1 and wheather allows for ground heavy bombing go with shock attack

The weird thing is when I played Allies against the AI, the AI defeated me in PI even though I had superior forces. It took a while but I was almost completely out of supplies when I finally lost. So that's where I originally got the idea of wearing down my opponent's supplies. I haven't had it work in a PBEM yet though. Hong Kong fell early and I only attacked it with 38th Div. and an engineer rgt. It looks like sometimes relatively small numbers of troops will win a battle. I'm with pauk, I don't understand ground combat very well at all. I don't see where some of the odds of attack are coming from in ground battles.

Why shock attack with 1:1 odds? I always thought of shock attack as something to avoid as you take a lot of casualties. But...like I say I don't understand ground combat that well either.

shock doubles your attack so 1:1 in deliberate means 2:1 in shock - taking base

Thanks guys for advices, but unfortunatly i'm not smarter then i was before. Inver, i follow tactic you have described, but every time when i order ground units, my bombers stays grounded.

Sneer, you are apsolutely right here, however.... You can see that i got 1-1 with deliberate, then i rested my troops (on single unit was with 25+ fatigue), ordered shock attack and got 0-1. Simply don't understand....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/04/42

BURMA

I've little consolation for yesterday defeat at Manila. More than 80 Zeros visited Calcutta and shot down 30 planes. I've lost 8 Zeros, and this certainly isn't unacceptable ratio for Allied players. I wonder if anyone who scream in "Zero bonus" thread actually ever played PBEM. Warhawks are from AVG/A and they are awardered with kills.

Day Air attack on Calcutta , at 29,23

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 81
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1

Allied aircraft
Buffalo I x 12
Hurricane II x 3
P-40E Warhawk x 22

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 7 destroyed, 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Buffalo I: 12 destroyed
Hurricane II: 3 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 15 destroyed

SRA

"Refugees" from Soerbaya are finished. There is few more Dutch units still alive, in the hex between Malang and Maedion.

Ground combat at Malang

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 66218 troops, 727 guns, 9 vehicles

Defending force 5178 troops, 25 guns, 5 vehicles

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 2

Japanese assault odds: 4 to 1 (fort level 2)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Malang base !!!

Japanese ground losses:
508 casualties reported
Guns lost 16

Allied ground losses:
15752 casualties reported
Guns lost 41
Vehicles lost 1

CHINA

Paras still holding positions at Kunmning and no resource and supply are produced.

Ground combat at Kunming

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 24655 troops, 163 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 4462 troops, 26 guns, 0 vehicles

Allied assault odds: 7 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
127 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Allied ground losses:
232 casualties reported
Guns lost 8

87 Army bombers scored 29 resource hits on air raid on Chungking.

PHILIPPINES

Yes, if you asking yourself too, bombers did fly today and attacked AF! Grrrrrr.....!
I'm still wining small battles but i would rather like to win decisive ones (Manila, at Kweiyang crossroad) then strategical un-important battles like this one:

Ground combat at Puerto Princesa

Japanese Shock attack (PARA)

Attacking force 299 troops, 3 guns, 0 vehicles

Defending force 420 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles

Japanese assault odds: 4 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Puerto Princesa base !!!

Allied aircraft losses
Catalina I: 3 destroyed (6 destroyed on the ground)

Allied ground losses:
483 casualties reported

I've noticed that Andy choose Puerto Principesa for transfer base. But, he forgot that Puerto is in the range of my transports. And I have airborne Yosuoka SNLF at CF.

Btw, last few turns Allies had B17 opps losses (two by day, i think).... I'm afraid that i can expect these monsters on the frontline soon....but where? (my guess is PM, because Lunga is AF 1 and Rabaul AF 4 - Andy is alerted now).
