LoL...my dad was a bank computer operations manager back in the 70's. He'd take me to work and the computers would fill entire floors. The tape reels were as big as an extra large pizza tray and data was entered into the machines through punch cards. When they got their first monochrome montiors it was the coolest thing since....well Space 1999.

sounds about right

lets see...

8088/8086
286
386 - used one at work!
486
Pentium (586)
Pentium II (686)
Pentium III (786)
Pentium IV (886)

i know they dropped the x86 clementure with the Pentium so the pseudo numbers probably don't apply from II onwards if there were subtantial changes. Went from 486 to my first Pentium around 94. LoL, my computer purchases have increased power exponentially with nearly each purchase.

first upgrade 486 33Mhz....(33 - 66) 4meg RAM
then another small jump to 90 with the first Pentium model. 16meg RAM
Then upgraded the processor to 266Mhz which was smoking hot at the time.
Next machine was 300MHz Pentium II 256Meg RAM

I was fortunate in that my machine remained viable enough that i was able to skip the entire Pentium III series and went straight to IV....1.4MHz,512Meg RAM then replaced motherboard, RAMBUS memory and process making it it's current 2.0MHz wth a gig of RAM (and LO....Windows XP finally started working well enough to replace 98 as the main O/S)

Still have the above but its the secondary machine now....the Alienware Laptop (P4 3.6MHz dual processors 2 gig RAM) is the primary vehicle now. A Doom 3 ultra quality level playing machine. Can process a WitP AI orders phase in under 20-25 seconds.

LOL. Yes I find that I care less with each generation what the processor is. I tend to really squeeze all the performance I can out of my comp before upgrading though, but that may change now. I think my mean time to upgrade was about 5 years. Now it's going to be more like 2.5

let me think Atari 800 84 to 90
286 from 90 to 95
mac from 95 to 2000
pentium IV from 2000 to 2003
dont even know what I have on my laptop now.

Just fine... Before I bought WitP, I played PacWar on it; also such titles as Complete Carriers at War, War in Russia, Red Lightning, Master of Magic, Master of Orion, Northern Fleet, Red Storm Rising, Centurion, War of the Lance, Nuclear War and that perennial classic, Blockout!

Yeah, Space 1999. I could never figure out how they built so many of those space ships. They lost droves of them each week.

It could be worse - i paid about that for a disk-based TRS-80 system in 1984 or so... (just over $4K, not including add ons, etc., just for the basic system...)

Very true...that and how the hell did the Moon get so far away from Earth so fast? oh yeah....."space warps!"

GF mark I unit's comment: "I can see the wires lifting up the spaceship....how dumb is that?!"

"well dear...make in the old days before Terminator II and "The Last Starfighter", they had to use actual physical models of the spacecraft"

"Last Starfighter....whats that? another geeky movie??"

(GF unit is younger than Speedy.......and has no clue about the classics)

The only reason I watched Space 1999 was for that alien chick. She was hot back then. To be honest, I don't even remember what she looked like. Brunette, I think?

it really is amazing when you think how far the tech has come. from stick figures and to first person shooters....from corney openings to full cinema spactacular introductions. (Doom 3) and from 8bit strip poker to.....___ er.....uh, Microsoft Hearts. yeah.....

Impressive as Doom3 is, I think i was more amazed when Unreal first came out. Totally amazing graphics and a killer AI.
