So Nik, you are saying that cats when punted are more aerodynamic then F4F's or A6M's ?

We know why Japan lost, it is purely because women entered service in the USA, it has nothing to do with anything else. Obviously without the women, the USA would have never become a superpower

My PBEM opponent. It's in the AE Thread. I sent KB (4 CVs) after a supply convoy east of Canton. The other KB (2 CVs, 2 CVLs) came from another direction. They trashed 2 convoys and he sent the Yorktown which I sank, then the Saratoga, which I sank. I had moderate damage to 2 CVs and heavy damage to 2 CVs. I lost 1 DD to a sub and sank:

2 CV
2 CA
1 CL
5 DD
13 AK
14 TK
4 SS

He's still trying to find my CVs.

Unsuccessfully, I might add.

Without women in the servive the US would have happly drank beer and ate Cheetos while watching TV in it's undewear. Not a super power but happier.

My cat always lands on it's feet. Can't say the same for my aircraft.

The F4F reminds me of a quote from the Hitchhiker's guide "Looks like a fish, moves like a fish, turns like a cow".

If their IAS goes above 250, then yes, PUNTed cats roll much better and as everyone knows, roll rate is the most important element in maneverability.

Not really a problem cause the wings would rip off at about the same point in time

It's almost funny to look back on aircraft designed back in the "Dark Ages" of WW II and marvel that more people didn't die then actually did. Being a pilot then meant something, you had to physically fly the plane and deal with the G forces ... dive bombing in those days must have really been an interesting exercise. Here, stick out you dive brakes so the wings don't rip off and point at the ground ... if your pull up was late or your bomb didn't come off, bye bye ...

The reason i brought it up is i ran across that in my readings on the P-38. Because of the high-lift wings which were designed to give it a good climb rate, the air would move across the top of the wing at 40% faster than the bottom of the wing.

This means that at altitude (where the speed of sound is slower) that in a dive (say at 450 mph True Air Speed), the air would be moving at supersonic speeds while the rest of the plane is moving at 450 mph. This caused the infamous "compressability tuck" - and it could be difficult to get OUT of the dive if you didn't know what you were doing.

And yes, if you tried turning to get out of the dive, the wings COULD come off. However, a good pilot (even if untrained in the situation) could figure it out. For a green pilot - well, things were problematic.

IAS would be nowhere near what the True Air Speed was in these cases. All kinds of wild speed records were claimed by various pilots and touted in the papers.
