Thanks for the link. I had the old APPLE II version many years ago. As I recall it came in a large folder like a phonograph album.

I had to order it just for the nostalgia factor (and to support those guys). For what's it's worth, the new CAW XP compatible version is selling for $27 (discounted from $39) so it's a bargain right now.

W@W games would be real coups.

I really enjoyed the W@W games!

There would need to be some changes to "take advantage of computing to make wargaming better" as I keep saying.

How about GARY Gs old C64 NATO Commander that was a great game and there is nothing on NATO/WP warfare at that scale out right now or
try GDWs The third World war series (this would be a larger undertaking however there is a Vassel version avb right now)

VGs Nato next war in Eurpoe is another ( I played this one more than GDW it does not take as much room)\

Hi, Metersteiner Beer manager. 1997 publisher and developer now gone. I only had the 4 year demo version. I looked in vain for the full 40 year version. Game was really fun to play . Graphics stunk but the business model was very good. Besides who would not wish to be a beer baron in Germany?
While they are upgrading it they should add a multi player function.
(If anyone has the 40 year version please send me a copy)(HOTUD only has the demo version)

How about the old holistic games? Emperor of the Fading Suns, and Final Liberation etc. That would be awesome. I'm pretty sure Holisitc doesn't make computer games anymore, so EFS would be fairly easy. Final Liberation is tied to the Warhammer 40k licences, so not sure about that.

man, there are a lot of good choices here I agree with...
carriers at war
action stations
for the modern era I'd say
SPI's 'the Next War' and a small
Simulations Canada game called 'Seapower and the State'

How about Avalon Hill's Kingmaker for the PC? Update it to Windows, add in all the optional rules, enhance the AI, and add network play. And do it before Paradox snatches it up and messes with it like they did with Diplomacy.

I would go for this one for sure.

I think Stardock of Galactic Civilizations fame was looking into doing an MoM remake.

MOO4? Yikes! They will have a hard time pushing that one after the tripe they called 3.... The cd's are naught but coasters. Fans have cleaned up alot but for me--it is gone from the hardrive.

Space Empires is quite good. I have bought them all so far. I am looking forward to the SEV.

I'd like to see someone do a remake of the original Reach for the Stars.

I would love to see a well done computer version of Third Reich....I have the old Avalon Hill computer version but it's just too clunky to play, and very poor AI.

Another board game I'd love to see on the computer is Victory Games' 2nd Fleet. I know 5th Fleet was made for the computer, but there's just something magical about the potential NATO/USSR Battle for the North Atlantic. I've heard rumors of a Matrix release of Harpoon......

here is a windows version

http://www.ssgus.com/ccaw.html

This was posted awhile back (somewhere) and I went ahead and ordered it. The game has some installation issues (the install screens are garbage text, but the manual says "just keep hitting return and the program will install". I can't understand why something like a missing font wouldn't be fixed as it looks very unprofessional to ship a game that way. However, once installed, the game played perfectly (and much, much faster than my old Apple II version). It is still a great game and I enjoyed playing through a couple of quick scenarios (it includes all of their European and fantasy scenarios also).

I would love to see Matrix pick this up and do an upgrade. The game design is solid, it would just benefit greatly from improved graphics and sound. It would be a nice adjunct to WiTP and UV. Similar in some ways, but Carriers at War actually shows your search planes and your attacks tracking across the map. On the carriers you are micro-managing the arming and fueling of your planes befor an attack and making very detailed decisions about the number of planes to put up on CAP over your carriers. Defiitely a classic... and definitely worth an upgrade.

Also worth buying "as is".

Just thought of a good one.

A remake of Power Monger.

Who doesn't like invading a foriegn land, and killing or converting its inhabitants to your cause.

Plus it was cool to watch the souls ascend during a battle.

I just noticed your question today. According to the manual (I've only played a couple of scenarios) the following scenarios are included:

Action off Calabria
Arctic Convoy
Atlantic
Cape Matapan
Cape Spartivento
Convoy Raiders
Coral Sea
Coral Sea '46
Eastern Solomons
Force Z
Guadalcanal
Invasion Hawaii
Java Sea
Leyte Gulf
Midway
North Cape
Norway
Okinawa
Operation Ironclad
Operation Olympic
Pearl Harbor
Pedestal
Philippines Sea
Plan Orange
Port Darwin
PQ 17
Rabaul
Rainbow 5
Santa Cruz
Tarawa
Trincomalee
Wake Island

That includes a "Sink the Bismarck" scenario, but not sure in which of the above that is included.

The game is worth buying though the manual looks like it was printed on a home computer. They give you a "customized" cover page with your name on it! It is in a three hole student folio and definitely a labor of love to keep this available.

I'd buy it just to keep on supporting these wargaming veterans!

I agree any of the old SSI Games would be a good place to start! You may also want to try looking at Master of orion 1 or 2.

man, this broke my heart (seriously)....

recently i found some screenshots from this game (and posted it here somewhere)... well, you never forget the first love, right...?
