The forest growth from the position of the observation post. As you can see much time has passed since it was last used, the view of the sound is completely blocked.

Remains of a newer pre-fab style building....probably installed during or after WWII.

One of several mortar batteries located at the fort, well back from the gun line and completely invisible from the beach/Sound.

Towards the right-rear side of each mortar pit sits a small fire control shack. Here is a wood/metal protrusion in which wooden slots with pre-determined coordinates were slid out from the shack for the mortar crews to take their ques from. (talk about pre-digital age)

view looking toward front of fire control shack. Mounting brackets for the control/fuse box can be seen to the right. The mortars and crews would be observable from the small vision squares.

close up of a mortar pit/foundation. Four of these beasties would be cited per concrete enclave, in a square pattern.

The concrete structure that surrounds the front and sides of the mortar battery is hollowed out to provide a protected magazine. The metal rails in the ceiling are embedded steel beams used to hoist up and move the large mortar shells.

inside one of the smaller sub-chambers of the mortar battery is this ladder. It goes up to the top of the embankment to a small observation post.

Mortar battery Powell. You can just make out the mortars themselves in the pic. All gone now.

The door may be sealed, but someone appears to have left a vent into the command post open from this sub-chamber of the mortar battery. You don't think the photographer would crawl into that dark hole there do you?

inside the not so sealed command post. Despite the pitch dark surroundings (outside of flashlight) This handy camera does a pretty good job.

Deeper inside the command post. You can just make out a small room containing another ladder access that goes up about 50 feet to the top of the embankment where another small observation post is nestled.

Not much to see admitedly. The US Army is depressingly thorough in removing anything useful leaving just wooden debris, a few wires and concrete walls.

For some strange reason....GF mark I unit opted to stay outside and not partake of crawling through small hole in concrete wall. Guard dog keeps watch for spies.

One of the magazine spaces for the last mortar battery pit contained these long rows of wooden boxes. Odd.
