Status: offline 		I'll jump on the "what is it?" bandwagon.
I was in Turret 2 during this shoot -- actually filling the role of turret officer before they wised up and put a real 0 in there.

So, what's wrong with this picture?

But everyone should see what a HC 16" .50 round looks like through a turret rangefinder when it hits the beach .

Actually, there's something on the ship that's not quite right.

This is actually the big promo pic from from our first shoot.

Status: offline 		The rule at the time I was aboard was O-5 level and above you could be out on the weather deck to watch.

I think they relaxed that during Desert Storm because I've seen pictures with knuckleheads in the foreground during shoots.

This may be too hard a "what is it", but I'll leave it up a while and see if someone can get it.

Status: offline 		This ship is level? Shouldn't it be listing at least a little with multiple barrels firing at once like that? For that matter did they ever fire all those barrels at once?

Status: offline 		IIRC, the Navy stopped firing all of the guns at the same instant in a broadside, and timed them to all fire within a very short time, something like within a second or two. It puts less stress on the ships framing than firing everything at once.

Status: offline 		It appears that the upper left of the photo is daytime, and the bottom left is night time. I suppose they cropped the photo because the gun flashes show up with more contrast that way.

Status: offline 		It might be helpful to know when the photo was taken...

There is a photo of the Wisconsin from 1988 - it shows a smaller antenna just aft of the sat antenna on the bow - i don't see that antenna in this pic.

Also, there is a cylindrical object seen on the deck, just to the stern on the port side of the sat antenna which at first i thought was some sort of capstan, but it doesn't seem to be in the other photos i see from the same time. Possibly some sort of test equipment???


EDIT: The more i look at it, the more i think it IS a capstan.

However, there appears to be something on top of #2 turret that i can't identify...
