barbarrossa -> What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 6:25:06 AM)

I'll jump on the "what is it?" bandwagon.
I was in Turret 2 during this shoot -- actually filling the role of turret officer before they wised up and put a real 0 in there.

So, what's wrong with this picture?[;)]

Mike Scholl -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 6:35:18 AM)

We don't have the matching downrange photo of those "bricks" arriving?

barbarrossa -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 6:43:54 AM)

Nope.

But everyone should see what a HC 16" .50 round looks like through a turret rangefinder when it hits the beach [:D].

Actually, there's something on the ship that's not quite right.

This is actually the big promo pic from from our first shoot.

rockmedic109 -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 6:47:57 AM)

Looks like a French or Dutch flag below the port side crossbar of the mast.

barbarrossa -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 6:51:25 AM)

That's the red pennant telling other ships that we are conducting live fire from the port side.

French?! Perish the thought mon ami![:D]

JeffroK -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 6:52:30 AM)

Its a bloody small BB

m10bob -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 6:56:09 AM)

My cousin Tim was on the New Jersey..He told me it is very dangerous to be on the deck when the big guns are firing.
Looks like people are out there??

barbarrossa -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 7:05:00 AM)

The rule at the time I was aboard was O-5 level and above you could be out on the weather deck to watch.

I think they relaxed that during Desert Storm because I've seen pictures with knuckleheads in the foreground during shoots.

This may be too hard a "what is it", but I'll leave it up a while and see if someone can get it.[:)]

Mike Scholl -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 7:35:09 AM)

Has the Fire Control Radar been "blacked out"?

Cap Mandrake -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 8:19:01 AM)

It looks like the anchors aren't symmetric? Perhaps someone forgot to put enough duct tape on one?

dtravel -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 8:51:19 AM)

This ship is level? Shouldn't it be listing at least a little with multiple barrels firing at once like that? For that matter did they ever fire all those barrels at once?

Terminus -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 11:36:32 AM)

Actually, it seems to be listing a little bit into the direction of fire.

Sneer -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 11:41:50 AM)

i'm surprised ship fires full salvos
I'd expect that that was 1 full salvo for camera

Terminus -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 12:17:50 PM)

Hmm, interesting... I was going to attach this picture below to show another full broadside, but it seems the NJ is only firing six out of nine barrels here?

Sneer -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 12:26:11 PM)

on the first photo all barrels shoot
i think here is clue to the question

RevRick -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 3:23:42 PM)

IIRC, the Navy stopped firing all of the guns at the same instant in a broadside, and timed them to all fire within a very short time, something like within a second or two. It puts less stress on the ships framing than firing everything at once.

Mark VII -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 3:47:12 PM)

She doesn't appear to be moving?

String -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 3:55:33 PM)

The first turret doesn't seem to have the directors on it? Or whatever those nice boxes on the sides are at the back end fo the turret.

DBS -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 4:00:22 PM)

The focsle seems too short, even allowing for the foreshortening effect of the angle of view... May just be an optical illusion.

THATS BETTER[&o][:D]

mlees -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/5/2006 5:29:16 PM)

It appears that the upper left of the photo is daytime, and the bottom left is night time. I suppose they cropped the photo because the gun flashes show up with more contrast that way.

aletoledo -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/6/2006 4:21:16 AM)

whats that aerial for in the front? (sorry bow)

rtrapasso -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/6/2006 6:37:21 AM)

It might be helpful to know when the photo was taken...

There is a photo of the Wisconsin from 1988 - it shows a smaller antenna just aft of the sat antenna on the bow - i don't see that antenna in this pic.

Also, there is a cylindrical object seen on the deck, just to the stern on the port side of the sat antenna which at first i thought was some sort of capstan, but it doesn't seem to be in the other photos i see from the same time. Possibly some sort of test equipment???[&:]

EDIT: The more i look at it, the more i think it IS a capstan.

However, there appears to be something on top of #2 turret that i can't identify...

Funny place for an outhouse?

Terminus -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/6/2006 8:53:23 AM)

It does sort of look like a Porta-Head, doesn't it?[:D]

RevRick -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/6/2006 3:01:00 PM)

Well.. the only thing I can notice is that she's venting some stack gas, which most CO's would find rather... ah.. unsightly.. at least it's not black... Then the old man would have roasted haunch of engineering officer on the bridge.

06 Maestro -> RE: What's Wrong with this Picture? (4/6/2006 5:50:55 PM)

It seems there should be a visible sign in the water of the ship moving sideways due to the main guns fireing.

Nope. Duct tape is what holds a Patriot missile system together[:D].
