I'm just curious about how leagues are working using REAL players with the Lahman database. Anyone doing that? How's the multiple levels of minors working out?

A stupid question here -- does turning OFF team financials automatically invoke the reserve clause? I'll be playing during the 40s-50s, with the clause firmly in place.

How about dealing players for cash, then? Shaun? You gonna put this in?

Am I gonna be able to recreate the historical majors as they existed pre-free agency?

If it ISN'T possible, I'm not gonna piss and moan about it. I have a specific goal in mind, but I'll go with what I'm given. I got the stadiums and I got the player faces for my favored era already available.

Yes, I should've volunteered to test but I frankly don't have the patience or time. My apologies.

That being said, I'll go on faith that one of you may be giving the real-player-stat career routines a workout.

Thanks to all the testers for their dedication and perserverance.

With warmest regards, Glenn

I haven't done any real-player or historical testing, so I can't answer a lot of your questions. I also haven't tried turning off the financials yet.

However - I haven't seen an option to deal a player for cash (yeah, I wish this was in, too).

The multiple layers of minors is starting to come together. There were some issues with the early builds not reporting minor league stats very well, but its working now, and it really adds a nice layer to the game.

I'm normally a Lahman guy, I usually start in 1901 and work forward. However, I've been looking at fictional players at the moment; I'll shift over shortly.

I'm not deep enough into a career to have a feeling for it - I've been focused on testing in-game management.

Yes, I think that's in PS_2005.

That doesn't actually 'make sense' in the financial model he's got going. Instead of having a bank balance, and making or losing money, teams have a 'budget'. What would it mean if I traded somebody for $1M? Is it a permanent bump to my budget? Is it a temporary, one-year bump to my budget? Or do we have to introduce a 'bank account', place the money there, and deal with code like 'if the wage bill exceeds the budget, deduct it from the bank account'.. and 'pro-rate that if a player is traded mid-season'... Its not a simple item, and I'd expect to see trading draft picks earlier.

I couldn't say. We're getting closer and closer every release, I feel, but there's still a long way to go.

I'd say post, this forum or via e-mail to Shaun, exactly what you want to see in detail. If you don't ask for it, it won't happen! It sounds like you have a detailed idea of what you want, which, if its any good, I'd back. (I searched your posts back through October 2005, to see if you had, and didn't spot anything; if I missed it, or its older than that, it might be worth bumping/re-posting.)

KG -

I am starting a new Association starting in 1955. I'll let you know how it goes and try to get the almanac posted to my website soon.

Also, You mention turning off team financials. I didn't even know you could do that??? Is that an XML tweak?

Al, there IS a toggle switch on the Game Style Select menu. "Use Finances/Salaries/Free Agency" (on/off). At this point, after the initial draft, the players are bound to you unless you trade or release them, or they retire. Voila -- reserve clause in effect, and you become Charlie Comiskey. Muhaahaahaa

One nice thing I'm finding...

You can import a 60-man Lahman roster, and there's no limits to who gets included.

So, the 60-man roster for my 1946 New York Giants includes, for example, pitcher John Carden (real life career: 1 game, 2 innings pitched, for New York in 1946). He's buried in my AA roster, and doesn't look like he'll ever reach the bigs... but its just so cool that he's there!

That IS cool. Is it too much to expect seeing Archie "Moonlight" Graham with the 1905
Giants? (yep, that's when he made his one and only appearance). This also happened to be Ty Cobb's rookie season. "Moonlight" would've had no clue about "Shoeless Joe " Jackson (rookie season 1908).

No such luck - just tried it out for you. Neither Moonlight Graham or John McGraw are listed on the roster. It looks like, since they got 0 at bats, they don't get included.

Offa Neal - 4 games, 13 at bats - is included.

I'll bug it.
