Come on, allies can achieve good success in counterattacking in 43.. Just don't go chase the Whole KB with your fleet at this point... In 43 allies can win carrier battles against part of KB. In 44 they win anyway...

Regarding respawn, IIRC the first 4 US CVs lost before jan 1 1944 respawn. After that, it is all bonus for jap players.. So how many US CVs have been sunk from the start ?

SE
i can loose Zuiho and Hiyo /Akagi fate is unknown for now
if they kept together there would be probably no losses :-( Grrrrrrrrrr. .... i know Nemo pointed the same problem
BTW battle is not over
there will be second day for sure
question is what allies do

it was surprise i guessed that balance point will be brought to the south and canton is important to allies as shorten transport routes
it was one of combat patrols - i wanted to see what is going on at Pago Pago :-)
i did few big mistakes but none happened to be decisive till now

no US CVs sunk till that moment :-( - it doesn't matter
later he will have enough
i'm not sure but i feel hornet /wasp was not there ....or saratoga/lexington group did not launch their strikes

It seems you are in good position to exploit your victory little bit more.. You gained local superiority for now. Those damaged fast BBs should be worth to take a risk (and maybe even accept some loses) and finish them. You might have never second chance. Fast BBs are sometning the allied player will miss a lot!!
Those CVEs were hammered not far from your current position, so Raverdave should now the KB is loitering around.. Maybe the unsufficient p.m. attack on those CVEs confused him to believe that only part of KB is there and he planned a revenge not knowing he will run into full KB? Or was just unlucky and tried to avoid combat in wrong direction?
I hope Raverdave will later add some comment to see what was behind..

will he get the carriers back? as much as i could read, it already is the second yorktown.
Once again it has been proven that counterattacks before 1944 only work if you had a midway style battle with comparable results; as long as KB is still active, it will kill you

Hi,

there certainly is no proof that Allied counterattacks do not work before 1944. The outcome of carrier battles largely depends on players' actions. I think that Sneer was quite lucky in this battle: If the Allied strike would have hit another of his carrier TF's and if he'ld have been luckier with his torpedo hits (dice rolls...), it is quite likely that two Japanese fleet carriers would hit the ocean floor now - even with three lost Allied carriers, this would have been a victory for Raver.

And the Allies become much stronger from July 1943 onwards: Better fighter coordination (hardcoded) and Hellcats make Allied CV's very dangerous even when outnumbered...

Strikes were simultaneous (at least if in the same phase/AM or PM).

you are not right
I have 4 divisions with almost same composition so it doesn't matter which one will be hit
1 big CV
1 medium CV
1CVL
1CVE
+2-3BB
+3-4CA
+ DD

ap 190 planes at each

I was very unlucky that 1 div was out of major hex - if allied hot combined cap thay would face almost 200 fighters

8-12 BBs
12-16 CAs

nearly whole IJN as an CVs escort? Not much left to defend other theatres. But I suppose for now LBA can take care of that..
The CV composition is interesting. Aren´t those CVEs and old BBs little bit slow? With them KB loses the possibility to avoid unwelcome combat. But on the other side, "unwelcome combat" is something you don´t have to worry about for a few monts now

Sydney Isl battle day two
as damage to my carriers was medium and i knew they reach canton i decided to hunt enemy with 3 remaining division - i was always aggressive player
in last turn BB and CA covering wounded CV was ordered to head for Pago Pago as lot of transport /invasion fleet/ was seen there/
during night they found whole enmy fleet
fight was severe and all ships are shoot badly however neither is sunk or sinking
South Dakota was finished and reported sunk
Nevada and Indiana TF was broken by this combat and ships were attacked successfully later
but it was not as lucky day

in A.M. phase my CV group was covered by clouds and 3 US carriers attacked damaged CV -zuiho sunk - but it had high flt dmg so no diffrence
in P.M. phase my carriers got opportunity but enemy was covered
distance 2 hexes between them

so 3rd day of this battle will be reported tomorrow
I expect Indiana to have problems in returning to port , there is a chance that Nevada will have problems too
and no sign from damaged Washington - may it is sunk too ???

more or less clouds will decide results of day 3
and i'm not happy about this
BTW transports carried dakota group - all 64 on the bottom now

Formidable took 2 hits from 6.1" from Musashi and this guns are good
both penetrated and caused fire
so light dmg to me 10-15 sys max
not a big problem if Raverdave decides to use them in next 2-3 days and at pago Pago they can take new planes :-(

So enemy composition
3 US CV - Wasp Hornet Yorktown (lightly damaged)
2 UK CV - illustrious and Formidable (lightly damaged)
1 CVL ( lightly damaged)
2-3 CVE
still formidable opponent able to hurt Combined fleet which currently can't replenish lost planes
i have 3 carrier divisions and planes for ap 2.5 of them

Remarkably agressive for Raver -- I would have thought he would wait until he had the Essex. What's his opinion of all this?

looks like i predicted this turn well - again US and Jap were couldn't strike at each other
US carriers moved to 1hex east of canton isl 2 US BB groups moved to 3 hexes east of canton
my carriers stayed 1hex SE of Sydney ISl

musashi was targeted at canton and was defended well by canton's fighters which were taken from damaged carriers and brought from marshalls

meanwhile my carriers attacked 2 enemy BB groups and got 27 torp hits on enemy Battlewagons
BB Idaho sunk - at least 2-3 BB which are now in troubles
BB Indiana confirmed sunk at night
still no news from Washington
bad news is that BB groups killed 40+ kates and 20+ vals
and I still have enemy carriers to fight
enemy lost 15 fighters and DB

and of course lucky I10 skipper who hit 2 cruisers

this is biggest battle i ever seen in my witp career
3rd day and far from solution
still most of participating ships are fighting capable

I think Raverdave will strike Canton with bombardment run in the evening and I can't prevent this - my surface ships are 1-2 hexes too far away
i hope mines which are left at canton do their job
looks like 4th day will not bring final result as UK carriers are probably moving north as well as all CVE enemy has on hand together with UK fleet
invasion fleet still and Pago Pago
it is not taken away so i think Raverdave has extremaly strong will of fighting till the moment when combined fleet will be in a need of withdraw and than carry out troop landing
good news is that my calculations show that US carriers have ap only 50% planes ready so they will have problems of striking hard
UK and CVE can make double it

day 4 of great struggles
as expected Allied ships hit canton at night but found only mines - all damaged ships were moved out of harbour
good i disrupted US BB TF day before
both carrier airgroups finally exchanged blows - JPN position 2 hexes west of Canton - US position 3 hexes south od Canton (enemy wanted to close to range 2 )- range 4
no enemy plane broke my cap which was set at 70 % - as expected enemy had slightly over 50% of planes available (130) vs my 400 :-) so nothing strange in result - i lost too many kates (only 75 were available in last turn) to kill all oposition
in return Wasp was sunk
hornet have tough times and will sink probably too and Essex!!!!!! is damaged heavily but can survive
Pago Pago is probably full of planes so i will not pursue long - especially battle brought fuel level dangerously low
USS Washington sunk at night due to earlier damages
i lost 20+ kates and 10+ vals today fighter loses were not high
now i can claim great victory to JPN
enemy offensive is halted for at least 6 months
only 2 UK and 1 US carriers more or less operational
essex will stay long time in shipyard as well as many BB and few cruisers
i have official confirmation of 4CV , 3 fast and 1 slow BB sunk and few DD sunk as well as some transports
2-3 slow BB as well as Hornet and Essex are very heavily damaged and some of them may not reach home
also 7-8 cruiser are more or less damaged

JPN losses Zuiho sunk - 2 CV 1CVE and 2BB moderately to heavily damaged
air losses are probably 50% of KB with higher losses at Kates and lower in fighter sqns
looks like reversed Midway

magnificent... You have time to turn your defensive perimeter into a bunker now...

Do you have subs around that could make RAver even more nervous ?

Can you bring some on the path to PH ?

And all that for the loss of only a CVL ???

great... Do you realise that you have become the new flag bearer of japfanboys ? PZB's heir sort of...

This game promises to be sooo good in the future...

my perimeter is bunker now - little can be added
i bought kwantung eng units early and have never had problems with supplies
everything on 1st line is fortified to lvl 9
second line will be ready within mont
i even fortify PI now and Indochina + kwantung bases
as subs are concerned - few of them are available in the area - this battle was not planned - in was meeting engagement
i.e. canton infrastructure is still 50% dmg after bombardment from last week
2 days ago I10 hit 2 big CLs -

1. i'm not familiar with replacement pilot/groups experience but this will hurt enemy airgroups on carriers, right?

2. doesn't matter if she sunk - she will be out of action for several months!

3. rational decision

4. indeed. BANZAI! (and congrats!)

5. it is certainly nice that enemy can't have superiority in the air above seas. KB remains ruler of the sea. But what is important too, Raver lost quite a lot BBs so his ability to attack/invade your bases under the protection of 4E bombers is greatly reduced!

I'm sure that you will know what to do in next few months, so i won't post any kind of advice - damned joint AAR

you are right but with 1.801 we both have ability of good reinforcements
I doubt if many allied planes/pilots survived this battle

well half of 1.801 works ( the get pilot and airframe thing ) while the other half ( the named pilot pool ) is still very buggy and more likely to suck up your good pilots and make them disappear...

So it doesn't change that much, at least until that feature is fixed ( feature does isn't really needed anyway ).

Congrats anyway, it is satisfying to still have success more than a year after the war began.

Congrats!!! Your victory is very encouraging for the "dark side".
3 torps in Essex probably wont be enough , but the sys-dam will grow every day. And the journey of Hornet to safety will be probably worth of short story with an open end..
Do you know where are his remaining UK CVs?
