Away All boats- Dodson
In Harm's Way- Basset
Run Silent Run Deep - Beach

Those are the ones sitting on my shelf right now. There are others that I have read in the past and just can't remember the names off hand

The Last Lieutenant by Gobbell - a fascinating read about what it was like to be a naval officer abandoned in the Philippines

True, I did ask for fiction

I forgot about Run Silent Run Deep (I read it many, many, many years ago in high school). I still vote for Good Shepherd.

Thanks guys. The reason I started this thread was to get some ideas for summer reading material. You have given me things to think about.

Didn't Forrester write the Hornblower series?

Second that motion about "The Cruel Sea." One of the really great books about WWII at sea.

He also wrote Sink the Bismark which was fairly good.

He wrote numerous non-fiction naval books as well which, though well written, were a little dry and definately written for a different audience than his Hornblower series; Hornblower series being far more simple and easy to read than his non-fiction works.

No - Herman Wouk (who served on a DMS, iirc) might be flattered about that, but it was definitely fiction.

Musta missed the fiction part too. Enemy at the Gates wasn't fiction anymore than Incredible Victory.

A couple others that I had thought of again.

Goobye to some - G. Forbes  The story of a PB4Y-2 squadron in the Pacific near the end of the war
Dauntless - B. Tillman
Hellcat-B. Tillman

Both of the B. Tillman books are out of print, but if you can find them they are pretty good action books.

Yes, although it was based on Mack McKinney.

Not Fiction, but definitely a must read book:  Japanese Destroyer Captain  by Hara
Other very good non-fiction related to WITP if not strictly naval would be Samuari! by Saburo Sakai and Martin Caidin's Ragged, Rugged Warriors.

I liked "The Good Sheperd" a lot.

For Pacific Theater I greatly enjoyed "The Last Tallyho".  Can't remember who it was by.
