War In The Pacific - Struggle Against Japan 1941 - 1945 [:D][:D] [ time to duck ] Well you did ask for fiction. [:)][8|]

YankeeAirRat -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 4:19:46 AM)

Away All boats- Dodson
In Harm's Way- Basset
Run Silent Run Deep - Beach

Those are the ones sitting on my shelf right now. There are others that I have read in the past and just can't remember the names off hand

madflava13 -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 4:22:06 AM)

The Caine Mutiny

I thought that was a true story? [:(][&:][:D]

philabos -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 4:25:11 AM)

The Last Lieutenant by Gobbell - a fascinating read about what it was like to be a naval officer abandoned in the Philippines

BrucePowers -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 4:31:19 AM)

True, I did ask for fiction[:D]

I forgot about Run Silent Run Deep (I read it many, many, many years ago in high school). I still vote for Good Shepherd.

tsimmonds -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 4:38:34 AM)

Nicholas Monsarrat's The Cruel Sea

BrucePowers -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 4:53:01 AM)

Thanks guys. The reason I started this thread was to get some ideas for summer reading material. You have given me things to think about.

Drex -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 5:08:49 AM)

Didn't Forrester write the Hornblower series?

RevRick -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 5:30:18 AM)

Second that motion about "The Cruel Sea." One of the really great books about WWII at sea.

Correct. He wrote both.

John 3rd -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 6:15:43 AM)

I have to agree with Run Silent, Run Deep...

bradfordkay -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 7:30:50 AM)

Here's a lesser known one... Alistair MacLean's "South by Java Head".

Andy Mac -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 12:40:29 PM)

Douglas Reeman "A ship must die"

rockmedic109 -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 12:41:08 PM)

He also wrote Sink the Bismark which was fairly good.

He wrote numerous non-fiction naval books as well which, though well written, were a little dry and definately written for a different audience than his Hornblower series; Hornblower series being far more simple and easy to read than his non-fiction works.

[:D] [:D] [:D]

No - Herman Wouk (who served on a DMS, iirc) might be flattered about that, but it was definitely fiction.

Musta missed the fiction part too. Enemy at the Gates wasn't fiction anymore than Incredible Victory. [:)]

YankeeAirRat -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/8/2006 11:16:33 PM)

A couple others that I had thought of again.

Goobye to some - G. Forbes  The story of a PB4Y-2 squadron in the Pacific near the end of the war
Dauntless - B. Tillman
Hellcat-B. Tillman

Both of the B. Tillman books are out of print, but if you can find them they are pretty good action books.

And a fantastic movie. I'll have to check out the book one day.

BrucePowers -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/9/2006 4:50:26 AM)

witpqs;
I agree the movie was great. Until this thread, I did not know it was a book.

edited for not putting brain in gear.[:D]

afspret -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/9/2006 11:03:19 AM)

Run Silent, Run Deep

In Harms Way

Anything by Douglas Reeman that had a WWII plot line.

Yes, although it was based on Mack McKinney.

seydlitz_slith -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/9/2006 2:28:02 PM)

Not Fiction, but definitely a must read book:  Japanese Destroyer Captain  by Hara
Other very good non-fiction related to WITP if not strictly naval would be Samuari! by Saburo Sakai and Martin Caidin's Ragged, Rugged Warriors.

spence -> RE: Favorite WWII naval historical fiction (6/9/2006 7:19:01 PM)

I liked "The Good Sheperd" a lot.

For Pacific Theater I greatly enjoyed "The Last Tallyho".  Can't remember who it was by.
