I have seen numerous published accounts for the end of the Musashi, they all basically go along like this published account " Battle of Leyte Gulf. During this battle on 24 October 1944, she was attacked by American carrier-based aircraft armed with bombs and torpedoes. After taking 17 bomb and 20 torpedo hits and 18 near misses, the ship capsized to port, and sank at 19:35hrs." That account was from wikipedia.

she didn't make it back to port, no how, no way - so can't have record for surviving the most torpedo hits and getting back to port...

So far record is TWO...

If we look at extent of damage survived by torpedo hit, then what about the New Orleans? She had her bow ripped off by one torpedo at Tassafaronga, but still made it home...

There are differing accounts as to whether the Bismarck was hit by two or three torpedoes. The torpedoes did not sink her, but did disable her rudder. She was sunk the next day by concentrated fire from HMS Rodney, et al.

I think most accounts go for two strikes, the first failing to penetrate her belt armour amid ships and the second knocking out the steering gear.

Nope, no dice - we are just going by numbers here... if we were going by extent of damage, maybe OHIO (the tanker) would get it - she was hit by 1 torp and several bombs. She made it to port, but never out again...

But sorry, nope - number of real torp hits is what count here...

Again, doesn't matter - she never made it to port, so no prize for Bismarck, even if she was scuttled...

Party pooper I picked the New Orleans because she not only suffered catastrophic damage, but made it home, AND fought again.

The closest that I can find would be Hornet at Santa Cruz.  She was hit by 8 bombs, three torpedoes, and two crashing aircraft, lost power and began to list. Later, with Japanese surface units nearby, the decision was made to scuttle her. Ammerican DDs hit her with nine torpedoes and 400 5" shells. They left her in the water where the Japanese found her the next day burning and beyond repair.  They sank her with 4 long lance torpedo hits.    That is a total of 16 torpedoes over two days with no damage control active for the last 13.

I realize it wasn't torpedo damage, but from an emotional standpoint, I am partial to the USS Franklin and her trip to New York.

Reported to be the worst fire damaged suffered by any US warship in WWII

Like you said, things dont happen in a vacuum. I'd bet money that at least 2-3 ships that got hit by more than 2 would have survived had it not been for other considerations. As it stands, however, I think 2 is it.

Well, I can't think of any warship that took 3+ torp and survived, but I am sure some empty tankers were able to take 3-4 close to the shore and survive, I will just have find one case.

On the other hand, loaded tankers were often doomed by one torpedo. And supply-laden AK should have a chance to explode as warships do, as they often carried explosives, ammunitions or aviation gas.

By the way, in real life a lot more ships were scuttled than in WITP. Simply because in RL ships have crews, while in WITP they have not (a crew will always be lost with its ship, exp of the crew is gone once it is sunk). And 10% points saved are not enough to not take the risk of having the ship sunk if there is a slight chance to save it.

OK - here is a question that has come to mind?

What is the most "functioning" torpedoes a ship has been hit with and eventually made it back to port, or if in port, did not sink at its moorings?

By "functioning", i mean torpedoes that hit a ship and had full-order explodsions (not fail to explode, not "squib" explosions.)

Don't give example like "ship x was hit by umpteen torpedoes, but didn't sink until it was hit by umpteen plus one"... Ship has got to survive the experience without settling to the bottom...

EDIT - Oh, yeah - i'm talking real life here, not WITP...

Franklin : It's too bad Kamikazes in WitP don't do that sort of damage when they hit (even if they could make it thru CAP)...

i suspect my Subject Line is causing problems, but i wanted to make it "punchy" - should be maybe something like "surviving torpedo magnet record", perhaps...

What about surviving more than one engagement..in which case the cumulative hits might be greater than two. I'm thinking of the Enterprise which must have been hit by dozens of photon torpedoes over the years.

No - cumulative is interesting, but not THE record i am looking for... actually, i checked out Big E - turns out most of her damage was bombs and kamikazes...

EDIT - unless you are talking about the NCC class(es) of Enterprise...

None. She took a lot of bomb hits, though.
