OK - here is a question that has come to mind? What is the most "functioning" torpedoes a ship has been hit with and eventually made it back to port, or if in port, did not sink at its moorings? By "functioning", i mean torpedoes that hit a ship and had full-order explodsions (not fail to explode, not "squib" explosions.) Don't give example like "ship x was hit by umpteen torpedoes, but didn't sink until it was hit by umpteen plus one"... Ship has got to survive the experience without settling to the bottom... EDIT - Oh, yeah - i'm talking real life here, not WITP...

well SMS Seydlitz was hit by a torpedo and 2 mine's + over 20 heavy shell's and she was still able to make it back to Port... i saw her pictures i think that was the badly damged warship that did not sink...

The WeeVee ate 6 torpedoes on 12/7, but she did sink to the bottom of the harbour; luckily, she sank on an even keel, due to counterflooding, and didn't capsize like the Oklahoma.

Some WWII example. CA Kumano was hit by a torpedo fired by DD USS Johnson on 25 October 1944 in Battle of Samar, then hit by 2 torpedoes fired by submarine off Luzon on the 6th of November (4 subs fired 23 torpedoes at her, who hit her is controversial) and was still afloat in port on 25 November when she was finally sunk by TF 38 aircraft. During the Taiwan battle in October 1944 the CA USS HOuston was torpedoed twice in 2 days and reached Utithi two weeks later. BB Yamato was hit by two torpedoes fired by SS USS Skate on 25 Dec 1943 and reached Truk the same day. So surviving two torpedoes was possible. I have not yet found example of surviving 3. In WITP I once hit the CV HMS Formidable off Sumatra with 4 or 5 torpedoes and not even try to chase it, as I was sure it was doomed. It reached Ceylon and was saved...

Neveda was only struck by one torpedo but her flooding difficulties were compounded by the accidental flooding of her rear magazines + it was discovered that her armored deck was not watertight which caused slow progressive flooding to spread. A bomb hit in her forcastle blew a large hole in her side that eventually shipped water as her bow trimmed. And yes...no battleship ever took 3 to 3+ torps at sea and lived.

surviving more than 2 was possible but since events rarely happen in a vacuum there was often other circumstances that led to the demise.

OK - one website says Littorio took 3 torp hits at Taranto and was "damaged"... i'm not sure about that, as another website says it was Vittorio Veneto ... and it doesn't really give details about damage (i think USN "officially" calls several ships sunk at PH as "damaged".)

Nope, Littorio won't get the prize as i found this: "Littorio � sunk in shallow water by three torpedoes in the Battle of Taranto, later raised, then renamed Italia after the Italian surrender. Given to the United States at the end of the war and scrapped in the 1950s."

Littorio's bow grounded in the shallow harbor. Had she been at sea.....she would have been in serious trouble if they couldn't correct quickly the severe bow trim that resulted. I've seen diagrams of the below water damage.....I doubt she would have survived, unless the Italian DC teams had been quick enough to counterflood. On the off chance that she didn't quickly go down or capsize, she would have been crippled due to the level of water and the potential flooding of machinery spaces......that would have left her vulnerable to a British counterstroke.

Better example than Nevada was Littorio after attack on Taranto. Struck by 3 torpedoes, was beached 6 hours 24 minutes after last torpedo hit, to help with rescue action.

USS Minneapolis was hit by 2 during the november 30, 1942 battle. IJN Takao was hit by 2 sub torpedoes during the leyte battles. Although never repaired,she did not sink either. Joe D.

Possible winner - SS Tornus - according to COMBINED FLEETS: "31 December 1943: Indian Ocean. The I-26 attacks the 8,054-ton British tanker TORNUS. First, Kusaka fires three torpedoes, of which two hit. The TORNUS starts to list but soon manages to counterflood. The I-26 then fires two more torpedoes from the opposite side, but fails to sink the tanker. " not sure if any of the torps from the second attack actually hit and exploded, however.

I have seen numerous published accounts for the end of the Musashi, they all basically go along like this published account " Battle of Leyte Gulf. During this battle on 24 October 1944, she was attacked by American carrier-based aircraft armed with bombs and torpedoes. After taking 17 bomb and 20 torpedo hits and 18 near misses, the ship capsized to port, and sank at 19:35hrs." That account was from wikipedia.
