Scheer was a guy who could think on his feet. Luck had little to do with it.

Scheer was a guy who screwed up and admitted as such after the war.

Scheer had to make a pretty quick mental transition from ambusher to ambushee. Reversing course after the first turnaround wasn't the wisest thing, but considering what he was up against, he still brought his fleet home. It's not like Jellicoe couldn't guess where he was going.

Nikademus -> RE: Torpedo Magnet "Record"? (6/22/2006 7:11:29 PM)

The battle turn maneuver did save the German fleet, but the credit doesn't go to Scheer. He had to fall back on it....twice after falling into the same trap again and finding himself the target of Jellicoe's deployed line. As i mentioned, Scheer himself admitted postwar that had he handled his fleet the way he did at Jutland during peacetime, he would have been relieved of command. The battle turn saved his (and the HSF's) collective butts but it doesn't make him brilliant.

As Massie concluded in his book (Castles of Steel), Hipper beat Beatty and Jellicoe beat Scheer.

Things might have gone better for the British had Beatty not screwed up and gone charging off seeking glory and done his job instead, giving Jellicoe proper intel. (Leaving Evans-Thomas behind was another big boo boo of his as well)

Agree with Nik and Massie's assesment. Beatty was too hot headed and revelled in the lime light.

According to combinedfleet.com:

CVE UNYO recieved 3 torpedo hits on 1/19/44 from a US sub. Fore part of ship was wrecked, but
she made port & was repaired. (only to be sunk later in the year).

CV JUNYO was hit by 3 sub Torpedoes on December 8/9 1944. Despite 5000 tons of water
aboard she made port & was repaired.
