I just saw the latest screen shots. When did this get sexy?

I keep on wondering whether to pick this up again or not, but my last experience with it was a bit lame. It seems to me you need t0o be part of a gaming clan in order to get any fun out of this....

Anyone know if there are good, regularly filled UK servers? Is it still hit and miss whether you find a server with people on and, if you do, whether you see some action or not?

The last time I tried this, I was in a village. There was a half track near by and when I ran towards it, they just drove away. I then ended up running to the next town only to find nothing happening there...when I started running towards somewhere else, I ended up getting shot by something I knew nothing off...hardly an enjoyable experience.

Is it still a bit like that? Or has it changed with more populated servers and some level of command and control? I'm not expecting Day of Defeat...that's too fast. Nor am I expecting BF2...although the command aspect of that was pretty useful.

Thx

There is a 2 week freebie that requires a CC to make an account. There is a 2 week freebie for those who have ever had an account and left. There is only 1 server where everyone plays. Many from the UK play with no problems. This is nothing like those standalone with 32 players. This is one server, 1/2 scale map with most of France German and Nethelands. Campaigns can last for months. 400+ towns firebases etc. A command structure is present that selects city targets. Bridgade structure is moved or lost for 6 hours from play if cutoff and destroyed, equipment takes 4.5 hours to replace, real physics, sound, damage etc. The d/l is free, but you can only practice with equipment offline. Getting to a fight has been improved. Mobile Spawn Points are trucks that you can spawn from that can be from 1400 to 450 meters from the targets. Capture a depot in each town that is connnected by a supply line to your town, you can spawn a limited numbers of infantry there. Attack Objectives are limited in number, controled by the high command and are required to be placed on towns before they can be captured. This funnels players into a limited number of fights.

This is exactly what I encountered. Then i asked questions and got ridiculed in chat and basically logged off and reloaded Battlefield 1942. this was two weeks ago.

No. It's nothing like that.

First check brigade roster. See which missions are active. Then check the map. If EWS (early warning system) shows enemy forces near the city join the brigade. There will be a list of active missions. Point defence/point attack most likely targets a depot or base. Area defence/attack is general targets for the city. As soon as you join the mission it will show you the target and origin (blue triangle - spawn point). Sometimes it's more than 5 km from target. This usually means that enemy destroyed UMS (unmanned mobile spawn) or somebody is a bad commander. I usually avoid those ones for the reason you described - boredom. After that select your unit and join the fight.

Small note here. If someone asks for a tow spawn a track and tow him to the frontline. Don’t be afraid to ask for a ride if you see a truck passing by.

There are some jerkwads in this game too. I was harassed by one once (he was explaining me that I’m wasting units by spawning them and de-spawning). So I told him that units just get back to the depot. He kept annoying me with his lectures about how he was warned by HC for wasting many panzers. So I hit F6 (general help channel) and asked. They said that it's OK to spawn and de-spawn units if you are getting RTB status.

Another one was telling me to get some training after I missed Me-109 from my Bofors. Somebody told him that bofors has low rate of fire and fighter is fast so it's almost impossible to hit it when it's moving at 90 angle. I didn't say anything because I needed some training indeed.

If you use F6 channel you usually get response very quickly. Community in general is great and very helpful.

I'm 10 days in game and going to stay (I've got lance corporal yesterday, so I can use now most of the units ingame). Thinking about joining the squad, because use of VoiP makes game more easy and fun.

Here is my humble advice how to deal with steep learning curve of WW2OL.

1. Read some guides and watch some training videos.

He is a bit cheesy with his “movie” approach, but if you are able to ignore the “acting” there are a lot of useful tips.

Very useful site with a lot of good info.

2. Log offline, and remap controls the way you like and train moving around, using the gun etc. Decide which unit and side you will most likely going to play and concentrate on it (although usually same types have the same controls, Germans have better optics IMHO). Try all allied and axis weapons and memorise small arms sounds (this one is very helpful cause you will be able to identify who's firing near you in the game).

3. Log online on training server and see if some people are online (squads have prearranged training time) and ask if you can join for training.

4. Get online and start playing. This is a grognard game so some people have 4 years of experience, they are elite soldiers. You will get killed a lot, get used to it.

When you hit lvl 5 (or6?) you will get binoculars which will increase your effectiveness in combat immensely. Before that you will be wandering a lot how come he saw me and killed me and i saw only bushes and trees. But i killed players with the rank Lt Col and Major so sometimes noob can get lucky too

5. Avoid night battles. They are chaotic and bloody as in RL. Some (or many?) increase brightness of the monitors or gamma in drivers (i'd call it cheating, as bad as putting a dot in the middle of the screen to get some accuracy for snap shots, - although here it doesn’t guarantee 100% accuracy).

In any case night missions were the most frustrating experience for me. In one i was killed 2 times, in another 4 times by the same person (he was camping FB). There was no way in hell he could see me without cranking up the gamma. I have LCD so it doesn't work very well for me and I wasn’t able to return him the favour.

I hope this helps.

I think they are changing the renderer and making some upgrades to models. Here is a newsletter.

Great post and welcome aboard!

Remember, if you cant find an attack mission with an Mobile Spawn Point, or in a depot in the city and have to ask for a ride, use the players ID. Just typing..truck I need a lift will not tell the driver who you are asking and he will drive away never seeing or knowing you are near.

You need to know how to find the mission that ables you to spawn directly into to the battle. There are three ways. Mission in which you spawn directly into the enemy town and another where you spawn directly into the truck which usually is close to battle. Third of course is your own town where the enemy is attacking currently and has either depots or trucks or both deployed to.
