No. It's nothing like that.
First check brigade roster. See which missions are active. Then check the map. If EWS (early warning system) shows enemy forces near the city join the brigade. There will be a list of active missions. Point defence/point attack most likely targets a depot or base. Area defence/attack is general targets for the city. As soon as you join the mission it will show you the target and origin (blue triangle - spawn point). Sometimes it's more than 5 km from target. This usually means that enemy destroyed UMS (unmanned mobile spawn) or somebody is a bad commander. I usually avoid those ones for the reason you described - boredom. After that select your unit and join the fight.
Small note here. If someone asks for a tow spawn a track and tow him to the frontline. Don’t be afraid to ask for a ride if you see a truck passing by.

There are some jerkwads in this game too. I was harassed by one once (he was explaining me that I’m wasting units by spawning them and de-spawning). If you use F6 channel you usually get response very quickly. Community in general is great and very helpful.
I'm 10 days in game and going to stay (I've got lance corporal yesterday, so I can use now most of the units ingame). Thinking about joining the squad, because use of VoiP makes game more easy and fun.
Here is my humble advice how to deal with steep learning curve of WW2OL.
1. Read some guides and watch some training videos.

2. Log offline, and remap controls the way you like and train moving around, using the gun etc. Decide which unit and side you will most likely going to play and concentrate on it (although usually same types have the same controls, Germans have better optics IMHO). Try all allied and axis weapons and memorise small arms sounds (this one is very helpful cause you will be able to identify who's firing near you in the game).
3. Log online on training server and see if some people are online (squads have prearranged training time) and ask if you can join for training.
4. Get online and start playing. This is a grognard game so some people have 4 years of experience, they are elite soldiers. You will get killed a lot, get used to it.
When you hit lvl 5 (or6?) you will get binoculars which will increase your effectiveness in combat immensely. Before that you will be wandering a lot how come he saw me and killed me and i saw only bushes and trees. But i killed players with the rank Lt Col and Major so sometimes noob can get lucky too [:D]
5. Avoid night battles. They are chaotic and bloody as in RL. Some (or many?) increase brightness of the monitors or gamma in drivers (i'd call it cheating, as bad as putting a dot in the middle of the screen to get some accuracy for snap shots, - although here it doesn’t guarantee 100% accuracy).
In any case night missions were the most frustrating experience for me. In one i was killed 2 times, in another 4 times by the same person (he was camping FB). There was no way in hell he could see me without cranking up the gamma. I have LCD so it doesn't work very well for me and I wasn’t able to return him the favour.
