Kill the Tinian intruders Samourai! You've got no means to defeat the Uber Cap, but you still have the capability to kill them on your own ground. You're right to do it before he comes with the battlewagon - a flattop without planes is useless

We can't let them pounder Tinian anymore, they have to pay! If you can't hit the soldier, break the sword

I know this will be unpopular but I think that you are committing these units to a fight they can't win. If your goal is attrition and slowing the enemy then do it when the experience of your pilots is improved by 2 or 3 more months of training. Throwing pilots in now won't blunt Andy's decisive thrusts now. It may not blunt them later either but at the very least the chance will be there. I think you are fighting too early both in strategic and operational terms.

Here's what I mean. If you discount the strategic advice then at the very least consider the operational advice... At some point in time during the invasion cycle when Andy has committed ground troops but before he is strong enough to take the target he will have to cycle his BBs back for replenishment. If you wait until that time to fly your fighters into nearby bases you will allow them to fight with one of the largest threats to their existence removed from the equation. Andy is so used to gaining air superiority whenever he wants that you can be almost assured that he will try to smash any of your bases which show a dark red airbase. So long as he does that smashing using his airplanes and not his battleline you have a chance to blunt his offensive power and give yourself the opportunity to base some bombers and fleet units into the area for smash and grab raids on his transport TFs.

Right now though you are meeting his schwerpunkt head on. This arrow will shatter your shield. I would suggest meeting the schwerpunkt a bit later on after it has lost some of its momentum and meeting it at a tangent so that its full force is not directed at your, inferior, forces.

Obviously though you are the commander on the scene and know the situation more fully but I would point out that you are setting up a situation which is similar to the situation in which KB came to such harm. You met the thrust head-on and suffered for it. Meet it after it is fully extended, throw it off with your defensive actions and then, in the few days it will take Andy to bring up new fighters base in all your bombers and strike hard. This maximises on enemy weaknesses instead of trying to beat his strengths ( something I think the Japanese cannot do at this stage of the war).

Hear, hear: Big news! The capitalist Yanks and their servants have started an
offensive against Imperial ground in the Marianas.

Several large carrier strikes hit Tininan followed by 100 B-29's from the Marshalls.
So TINIAN is the target!

In the first air battles 41 Hellcats and 2 Corsairs were shot down for the price of
81 Zekes, 37 Oscars and 26 Georges! 144/43 = 1-3.35 kill ratio. Not bad!

Especially the George fighter showed itself to be a Hellcat killer and achieved almost
a 1-1 kill ratio. I managed to extract 1 George and 10 pilots after the battle and the
unit will be rebuilt ASAP!

Somehow US battleships WITHOUT CAP halted 1 hex east of Saipan/Tinian and were attacked by
2 small waves of Betty bombers. OOOHHH they pain, again we could have inflicted heavy casualties
on the enemy. This will not happen again...neither from my - nor Andy's side I'm afraid

Tinian is closed but Phase 1 of Turnip Surprise has been launched
Numerous bomber formations all over the Central Pacific have been put on naval strike - max range.

Hundreds of CAP fighters have been moved to Guam, Saipan and Pagan. Some even went to Tinian.
The enemy is not allowed to rest and we will gradually wear him down. I'm quite confident because of
the massive arsenal of available fighters and bombers. For each unit that was moved to the Marianas
a replacement arrived from Japan, China or the Philippines

Will post some screenies!

The George in Combat!

During the first phase of the battle the George was invincible and downed a dozen enemy
fighters without taking any losses. Gradually superior enemy numbers turned the tables.
Still, the George is a Hellcat killer. Next time we'll committ a much more potent force.

Thanks for the excellent advice Nemo!
Rest assured, I'm not going to whither away my strategic reserves unless Andy
can be beaten. I will gradually increase committment and study the strategic situation day by day.

I can already see major weaknesses in Andy's plan. Tinian is flanked by Saipan and Guam. I think enemy
ships my get 'lost' and die en masse in the huge minefields. Andy is a brilliant player, don't think I
give him enough credit in this AAR. Still, he has little experience with operations of this scale and he
will make mistakes - like we all would. So I think we should try to take advantage of these mistakes and
make him pay dearly for them.

We're finally fighting on our own ground. The enemy has to come to us and stay in place for weeks on end.
It's perfect In the first air battle no less than 43 enemy fighters were shot down. Morale will suffer
and fatigue increase if his strikes are opposed continously. So let's see how things evolve instead of following
a set plan

And yes..I am fighting a 'spirited' battle - according to Imperial Japanese traditions. This is the way I've
played this game from Turn 1. Vinn og forsvinn med samme sinn. Norwegian saying

Turnip Surprise - Phase 1

I've outlined the current situation and a possible scenario!
The Kido Butai now consists of 4 fleet and 4 light carriers. Lots of potential..so I need input now.
You don't want to read about defeats for the next 18 months, do you?

If you want my advice, don't get hurried

Lets kill his planes first... But getting from Ulithi to his air umbrella is a little risky right now, even for killing BBs...

You're right - again - Fish! It is possible that this is a raid only - meant to draw out our reserves and test the
defenses. I don't think so, but it's time to slow down and see how things develop. Here is the mail I sent Andy.
Start of 'propaganda war?'

At first I believed you would try - but on second thoughts...I think it's a ploy. You're the kind of cheap Scot
that would even lie to achieve your goals ;-)

Way too few transports nearby to be an invasion as well.

So I'm using the opportunity to test out how well my Zekes and new models fight over their own turf. Too
bad I didn't have more bombers on naval attack last turn though :-\

Very encouraged by the effectiveness of the George! 11 out of 27 pilots survived and they claimed 22 kills
in one sortie. When I bring in their brethrens I think you will feel it :-)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Todays turn: I found that LRCAP works quite well in the Marianas. Some 260 Oscars and Zekes from Guam and Saipan
LRCAP'ed Tinian. Of course ALL were shot down, even though up to 1/3 of the pilots survived. Another 68 enemy
fighters were shot down. 273/68 = 1/4 kill ratio. If you extract the 67 decoy Oscars we got a 1/3 kill ratio - and
this is with a mix of green and experienced (not crack) Zeke pilots. Very useful information.

Last day of May next turn - soon we'll have 400 crack Franks in the line!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/30/44

Even the enemy bombardment group managed to 'hunt' my sub among the mines.
It survived though. DMS ain't the best asw ships. So no more sneak attacks with subs. Only scout, mining

More of the same - cat and mouse game. No air 2 air combat today.
I'm building a powerful fighter presence on Pagan, Saipan and Guam.
Some 800 fighters by now. One day they'll all LRCAP Tinian.

In 4 days the enemy invasion fleet will arrive. I think we should sortie
the Combined Fleet tomorrow. Even if spotted Andy will get very nervous.
Escort carrier moves to the Bonins.

First Franks arrive tomorrow. Starting production: 320 ac before the 170 Tojos
produced are converted. That's some 10-11 ac pr day. First upgrade in 3 days.

Somehow Andy get's it ALL wrong!
His fighters are put on GROUND STRIKE - and there is NO escort! The leaky CAP
from Guam and Saipan makes mince meat of them

I watched the WHOLE show and SMILED for 15 minutes while the hated enemy ac were
SHOT DOWN IN DROWES without losses to themselves

This is the FIRST example of how the Uber CAP works in Japan's favor!
Enjoy fellow fan boys - this is a rare occasion - sake for everyone!

Can't see much of the enemy invasion fleet, Andy's carriers have now lost some
300-350 ac. This has to hurt - and we haven't even deployed our best units.
I'm simply feeding in more Oscars, Zekes and Tonys. They do the job and Tinian
is repairing 50 damage point for each turn Andy doesn't bomb it...

One thing: Andy said he wouldn't operate B-29s from anything less than a size 5 af.
The only size 5 enemy air base in the vicinity of Tinian is Kwajalein, 23 hexes away
What is the range of these monsters?

I didn't sortie the fleet - want to wait a bit longer and see what happens. The Kaga is down
to 19 sys damage while the Taiho got 23. Both in Shanghai now. Both carriers can therefore
keep pace with the slow Junyo at 24 knots. This brings KB strength up to 6 cv and 3 cvl.

The first batch of 11 Franks arrived pr schedule. 2 more days and I'll upgrade a unit on Ulithi.
This is perfect, these crack units can make our large formations of mediocre fighters very
potent - in a defensive role.

So I think there is hope, so let's but despair on hold and see whether Andy makes any more
mistakes.

Here are the actual numbers: We also lost quite a few bombers because of the un-intential raids.
Still the best result in all of 44 and probably 43!

Seeing that was actually better than sex! LOL! Don't get too ahead of yourself...doesn't the Allied player have the ability to almost instantaniously replenish those losses? I"ve never gotten farther than 06/42 in the 2 years I've been playing this game!

Well if you look at Andy's strikes you'll see he has a propensity for upgrading everything the instant a better airframe is available instead of upgrading gradually so that he always has a large reserve of all airframe types.

Since, I think, the latest Corsair variant is only a recent arrival its reserves might be low and even for those airframes which aren't low "ready reserves" (those which can be dropped into squadrons and ready to fight in 1 or 2 days) won't be all that large since he can't add pilots and planes to units on carriers. he will have to stage them through his CVEs and island bases and all of that takes time, time during which the Japanese player can exploit the weaker CAP and weaker ground and naval strikes.

PzB,
While I still hold my concern it definitely seems as though you've got things WELL in hand . I think this is unfolding into quite a fascinating encounter. It would be something indeed if you could hold onto Tinian.

Banzai!

outstanding victory... Did this battle produced any ace (if you have a time to check it?)

Please, be patient and catious - I agree that Andy is more than good player and he doesn't have exp in such invasions but...

be aware - he have quite a lot BBs and he can divide (as he did it) and sent to bombard each Marianna island! .. actually i'm suprised that he didn't do it (i would do that)...perhaps he waiting for more Jap ac on islands?

Rest assure guys, this was only a small set back for Andy. I think he's just drawing out
our CAP fighters. No invasion fleet in sight. So we're standing down a bit.

Guam was hit hard today: mainly because only 135 of 300 fighters were on CAP despite being put
on 90%. So we lost 160 ac on the ground and 130 in A2A combat. The enemy lost another 45 Hellcats
and 30 Wildcats, some 120 ac in all. So not a bad result, but I have to figure out how to increase
the number of fighters in the air when the attacks come in. Both Guam and Tinian are partly closed,
but Andy will have to continue hitting them both constantly. So let's see if he will and whether an
invasion is imminent or not. I will consider moving all remaining ac out of the Marianas if it's not.

The enemy fleets are quite vulnerable to attacks by surface groups. They stay in one place and launch
strikes and no ac are put on naval attack. Will put some ships in Saipan under a massive air umbrella
and try to taunt them to launch.

Today another 100 B-29's hit Guam and Tinian. I asked Andy whether all these operated from
Kwajalein, a size 5 AF 23 hexes away? Thought they had a reduced range from such a small field?

Franks are coming off the production lines in a steady stream. So the more time Andy uses, the stronger
we will become. Despite of our losses - which can be replaced relatively quickly.

For once it is a good news. It is as ridiculous as the US uber-CAP, but it works for IJN so rarely that is fine.

I don't know how many replenishment carrier Andy has now, but I doubt it will reduce significantly his air power for more than some days... Probably all losses were suffered by the CVE, that maybe will retire to reform airgroups (if AR don't work for them). In this case that may delay the actual landing, or the main CV TF will have to do the job of the CVE (CAP over the invasion, and ground support mission) and will be more vulnerable.

In your place I will concentrate AC for a major raid on Sarmi... 50 Zekes and 100 bombers will sink 1 or 2 BBs here at less cost than damaging a DD off Mariannas...

Not much real harm to the allied player. He can afford to lose some planes in 1944.
His CVEs with VR squadrons should make the losses good but he'll have to get back to base to draw more aircraft.
You may slow his air operations a little as he may have to pause to let his fighter pools replenish if you kill enough of them.
I you concentrate your fighters on CAP you may inflict heavy losses on him, but attacks on his carrier TFs would just cost you more aircraft and pilots to his UberCAP and UberFLAK and won't hurt him.

Not a reduced range, but a reduced bomb load. Basically they are bombing at half strength due to the non-optimal airbase.

The Combined Fleet has sortied!

Two escort carrier divisions are ready at Ulithi and Bonin Jima.
There will be opening both for the Nihon Kaigun and Kido Butai if
Andy invades, and I want to be ready.

The KB carriers close to 400 ac and I've decided not to bring the Kaga (18 sys)
and Taiho (22 sys). They will refit in Japan with the Katsuragi. Shokaku and Zuikaku
docks in Shanghai tomorrow and I will move 2 AR's there.

I'm convinced that it's possible to deliver a mortal blow to the enemy if he's foolish
enough to set foot on Imperial Ground - but it will require and all arms combined effort

Laurent, Sarmi is now a size 3 port and the Idaho has been disbandoned here. I've ordered 50
naval bombers to hit the port!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/03/44

Air Combat

Today we only CAP'en Saipan and added LRCAP from Pagan.
Unfortunately 'leaky CAP' cost us 100 ac today as a Corsair sweep
over Tinian mowed down all opposition.

The Corsair cost me the most sorrow in this game. 3 times more efficient
than the Hellcat. It achieves 6-1 kill ratios against crack units and 10-1
against medium quality units.

Marianas

I've moved CAP fighters back to Palaus, Bonins and Pagan. We have already achieved
good results. As far as I know carrier air groups now have to be moved ashore to be
reinforced? That's what I have to do with mine. Enemy carrier ac losses have been
big with a lot of ac taking damage.

So now we sit down and wait. Will Andy's carrier head back to the Marshalls, or will
an invasion fleet invade - and is it really Tinian? I've ordered a crack engineer
regiment flown in from Yap. I've moderated air transport and will not fly in heavy
artillery units. Small SNLF and engineer units travel 'light'.

PzB,

Today was definitely a good day for the Empire!
I just dealt my opponent a serious setback also.

Check out this attempted invasion of North Luzon.

Just goes to show that late war Japanese players have to lie in wait for Allied mistakes...

That's amazing BLurking! Seems like he underestimated your strength in the PI!
Was this the entire force he landed? 11 more days and I will receive the firsT PI reinforcements.
Then I will feel much more secure.

Andy's carriers are still hangin' around doing very little - but burning fuel, increasing
sys damage and expending aviation fuel

With all attention on the Marianas we strike Sarmi and upgrade our Tojos.
A full Engineer Regiment has now been airlifted to Tinian from Yap. I'm allowed to use
50 transports pr AF size according to the new house rule. This is no problem with the huge
fields in the Marianas and no enemy LR CAP. Andy didn't even notice them and the assault point
value has increased to some 1450. Planning to move several smaller units in over the next
week.

The longer the enemy invasion is delayed, the more prepared we will be. Andy told me that Tinian
was chosen as his target because it's flat terrain opposed to hills and mountains at Saipan and
Guam...didn't know this. So for the rest of you: Tinian needs a bigger garrison than the other
islands because these get a defense modifier of 2?.

Supply levels in all bases are still between 62 and 70k. I really feel ready for this

First Operation Frank Sentai

I upgraded a very experienced unit in China first. 380 ac being produced pr month now,
and still 113 Tojos will be converted.

Have you noticed that a brilliant air leader is only measured in regard to inspiration!
Like Col Renzo. He got an air skill of 36...

Yes, things look like they will very much come to a bloody head... BTW I believe the modifier for mountainous terrain is x 3. So for every 1,000 AV you have in the other islands you defend with, effectively, 3000 AV.

It could be scam...so we can't draw any conclusions. But the way he's been hammering ground units
at Tinian it would be strange if he suddenly changed targets. I will try to reinforce Tinian with units
from the Palaus though.

How many men would be needed to capture Tinian with 9 forts, 3800 mines, coastal defenses, huge 240mm
and 150mm guns, tanks, engineers and a total of 1450 AV?

With 300 engineers at Tinian the place won't stay closed for long and I think it will be impossible
to close more than 2 bases at once. Every week from now on a crack Frank Sentai will become ready for action.

I like this, it's perfect! We got the Yanks were we want them,
and they have to stay for a long, long time if they intend to do business!

Well Tinian isn't an atoll so he can land without Shock Attacking. 1450 x 3 (for your forts) = 4350 AV x 2 for your preparation ( I'm assuming you have an Army HQ and units there fully prepped for Tinian) = 8,700. Assuming sufficient supplies than your opponent is going to need 4,350 AV ( he should have everything prepped 100% so that should cancel out) just to get a 1 : 1 although even with 0 : 1 he should be able to bring your fort levels down over time ( as you can expect him to bring a lot of engineers).

4,350 AV is the equivalent of about 10 divisions. Don't forget that for every AV you bring in by ship, sub or air Andy is going to have to bring in 3 to equal it. So bring in all you can. The more you can force him to focus on Tinian the better off you are.... assuming he does invade it of course. Truth be told though  this would be an awful waste of resources and time for a diversion and Andy doesn't seem the sort to divert resources in that way.

He will not land in the Philippines by the way, if you really have PI reinforcements soon, send people from place you don't care that much to Marianas for the big show. I mean, the war will not be won or lost in the PI - but in the Marianas

Thanx Nemo! I got no doubt that Andy can land even 15 divs...but out of these only 10 will be
whole Any reinforcements will also be chewed up by mines and guns.

Most, but not all of my units in Tinian are prepped to 100%. Still, I'm going to listen to your advice.
The 12th Division is only at 65% strength in Yap. Has been lifted out of Hollandia. It misses all it's
heavy artillery and is therefore a prime candidate for being moved by air. Some 240 transports will take
on the job. I've also created a barge convoy escorted by a PC in Saipan, and it has loaded 1700 points of
a crack Bde there. You are right Admiral, the war will be decided in the Marianas, so why take any chances.
The units that will arrive in the PI in 10 more days have to be moved to the Palaus and shipped in from
there. Very, very risky.

These preparations need protection, so I've ordered a STRONG LRCAP over Tinian. Several crack units will
take part.

The Combined Fleet is now in Japan with 400 ac and the Taiho and Kaga have taken aboard 150 crack naval ac.
In total we can field 550 ac now. The KB LIVES!

Grand Admiral Yamamoto now only awaits the right moment to release the Imperial Legions!

Turnip Surprise - Phase 1.5

Several 'cunning plans' prepared for this turn!

We can hope to achieve the following:
1. Move substantial reinforcements to Tinian.
2. Destroy large numbers of enemy ac.
3. Lure an enemy carrier division closer to the Palaus and give em he11.
