I tried putting together a historical career league using this. I set up a Golden Age league, imported all available players into their real teams, and filled out the rosters by auto-signing generated fictional players for each team. (50-man rosters).

The reason I did this is because some teams had 40-45 real players available for import, while others had only 30-35.

What was cool was that you could easily differentiate between the real/fictional players, as the real players have their import year appended.

OK, great, so far. No one gets left out, and this is potentially an ultimate historical sim (by circumventing the 35-man roster limits).

My reward for this experiment was attempting to start spring training. At that point I got a Run Time 3021 error (no previous record exists), and the game crashed. I attempted to do it again with the auto-saved league, and it happened again. AAAGHH! Wha' happened?

My experience with four or five different sandbox leagues was precisely the same as yours.

I sent a bug-report to Shawn, but basically gave up on it at that point.

OK, thanks, Woodruff.  As a historical real player fan, I'm hoping we can "break the boundaries" and go beyond that 35-player limit.   Extra real players are there, but adding fictionals to fill out the rosters breaks the game routines.   Too bad.

I'm currently running a historical replay starting in 1901 with 60 player rosters. I didn't use the sanbox mode though, I used the replay option. Before starting the season, I went to the players screen and force retired all good fictional players, so I was left with the real players and a bunch of scrubs. Then when I started the draft, the game automatically created scrubs to fill out the rest of the rosters, since forcing all those fictional players to retire left then need for more players to reach 60 per team. It is a little time consuming, but I wanted to build my own history starting from the beginning, but by the time I got the present day I didn't want the 35 player restrictions. So far this seems to work, although I'm having problems with the real players importing to some teams. for example, 1902 the Milwaukee Brewers moved to St. Louis and became the Browns. So I changed the city and nickname to reflect this change. now I can't get any of the St. Louis Browns players in the lahman database to get drafted on St. Louis. In fact, St. Louis doesn't ever draft anyone. Same thing happens when I moved Baltimore to New York. Any ways, so far everything seems to work ok and I have successfully completed two full seasons.

I used Sandbox mode and started a historical AL association, starting with the 1969 season. I set the assn up as Multiplayer, with 35 man rosters. I haven't needed to use any fictional players.

With this configuration, not all teams are "required" to have the same roster size. My roster sizes range from 27 to 43. The ones with the larger rosters just have more minor leaguers.

I DO have all my teams set for human control. Not sure if this set-up would suit your needs, but it's my favorite and works well for me.

My experience was the same, too - Run time error 3021. But at the time, I was setting up a Sandbox mode league because I thought that was the way you were supposed to set up a historical sim league. When I found out the other way to do so, I abandoned Sandbox mode. So what exactly is Sandbox mode for? What features are "disabled" in that mode that are turned on in the other modes?

Even when setting up in Sandbox mode, I thought it forced you to specify what the roster size would be -- with 35 being the lowest?? I tried starting a league with 1946 in Sandbox mode, and invariably, at some point of the draft, I would get that dreaded Runtime 3021 error.

OK, can I get a step by step report on how to re-create the 3022 error in Sandbox mode. Thanks.

Shaun, I tried a different method for a replay association with 50-man rosters, and got the results I wanted.

I have tried historical sandbox mode with a variety of roster sizes and occasionally would get that error.  It usually came up when I moved players around prior to the draft.  Also, if one or more of your rosters are less than the required size, it is required that you run a draft to fill out your roster.  If you skip the draft, you will get the error and have to re-setup your league.  Once I figured out all of the quirks, I have had 100% success playing in this mode.

When I used sandbox and imported 2005 players there were multiple instances where players were imported twice.

A bit OT, but shouldn't it have been named 'Sandlot'?  Or is 'sandbox' an allusion to you can create it however you want?
