How do I know if my artilary is going to fire defensively in support of other units a few hexes away (it has a range of 3). To I set it to tactical reserve? Does it do this automatically if it has the moves left?

How do I know which formations it will support? Will it fire for another soviet army for instance in east front scenarios?

Also--how do I get my artillary with a range of 1 to just shell the next hex over and not "attack" it by charging in.

Thanks Ogg

As far as I know, as long as the artillery is dug-in it will support every friendly unit within range. I usually bring up the plan-an-attack option on enemy units if I want to see which artillery is in support range, but that only counts on the enemy hex. An artillery which is not dug-in but has moves left will not be supporting any unit as I understand it.

..set it to Tactical Reserve, it'l shoot, but keep one hex between it and the units it's set to defend

..fire support relates to its formation support setting, free, army, force, internal, to check try using the attack planner and look for gold/grey/black flags

..if P1 dig-in then set to tac reserve, if P2, stick it in the front line and dig in

..(ps..any relation to the Lancre Oggs ?)

probably so that artillery immediately retreats should the enemy close in and attack the hex with the arty (it has 0 MP after digging in so wont move because of its TAC setting),, at dug in it tends to stay longer, taking more losses.

On the other hand I've seen arty units even in direct attack repulsing pure infantry with bloody losses to the attacker... it all depends on the scenario me thinks

Forgive my ignorance but why would P2 do it differently the P1?

..cos of the program, all units recover move capacity in the inter-turn phase, so P1 can sit dug-in thru P2s move and use tac res setting by shooting, P2 units recover the movement in the next P1 phase so will and can obey the tac res setting, by moving into combat, unless they're not in the adjacent hex (2 hex ranged artillery)..

..s'ok, there's a group of friendly toads working on it
