All,

I often find it very difficult to allocate hrs and hrs for the average scenario. Why don't scenario designers (you) do more "short" scenarios that can be played in one sitting (against PO at least)?

I'd like to see some "micro-scenarios" which attack specific enagements/challenges. Things like just the Omaha beach landings, Arnhem, Bastonge, etc. Done with smaller scale maps, battalion units and limited timescales. I'd love to have these historical situations to work out what-ifs, and other historical situations.

These "micro-scenarios" would have like 1-3 divisions, use 2.5km scale and 6hr. turns.

Thoughts?

Ken

I like short scenarios, like Kasserine, for example. However, the law of supply and demand still applies, and the wargamer's thirst for monster games has appeared to increase over time. Look at the number of people wanting mega-scenarios (I like em too )....just read what people play in opponent's wanted.

I did Bastogne 1944 for TOAW:COW using the Westfront Quad boardgame as a basis for the scenario. Not sure if it will convert over into TOAW III. Also Chinese Farm '73 is a relatively short scenario. I remember someone did a pretty short Grenada scenario (hard to do a long one there!!!!!).

Your point is well taken, unfortunately when you get going sometimes the desgn takes over. Israel's War on Terror, which I'm working on, was originally done for HPS's Middle East '67 (ME '67) and Version 1.0 was a week long scenario and version 2.0 was 14 days in length. The TOAW III version 1.0 it was increased to 25 days and now in version 2.0 (that I just submitted) it is now 30 days (120 turns). The actual conflict has ruled that scenario.

By the way the original ME '67, Israel's WoT, version 1.0 scenario was done over the spring long before this all started and I couldn't dream of an Israeli-Hezbollah conflict lasting over one to two weeks max!

Didn't the last one last eight years?

Anyway, there is a lot of desire for small scenarios and there are actually quite a lot out there. Search by complexity on the Rugged Defence archive.

I think that smaller scenarios are more fun to design. The most time consuming aspect is creating the map, at least from what I have discovered, but the OOB's are relatively easy and can easily be made more representative. Usually not many events that are needed but there can be some nice "what if's". Easier to debug and playable in an evening. I am close to beta testing the Italian attack in June 1940 against the maritime provences of France on BN scale at 2.5km per hex and 6 hour turns.

There are nine short scenarios posted on the Blitz which were designed specifically for the Short Scenario Tournament. My entrant was PO enabled, some of those might also be PO enabled.

Maybe a fun contest could be sponsored by Matrix/SZO for development of short scenarios. A few new gems might emerge.
