A carrier escort group from Midway tried to attack an enemy task force at Wake. The enemy had a large carrier group in waiting, and intercepted. The escort carriers tried to attack the much larger enemy task force and failed. They also were unable to stop the massive carrier air attack that followed.
The only good news is that we now know the location of the enemy carriers

During the month of April 44, allied operations in Burma suffered a set back. An attempt tp cut off Lashio from Mandalay, to prevent supplies from reaching Lashio's Japanese defenders failed. The rationale behind that operation was to finally capture Lashio, and bring the substantial forces there to bear on Mandalay. This failed miserably.
In The DEIs Bali and Lombok have been recovered. Enemy cruiser forces out of Soerabaja harassed frequently the allied forces, but after a lucky hit by bombers out of Macassar and Koepang on April 8th
Day Air attack on TF at 25,66

Beaufighter Mk 21 x 20
B-26B Marauder x 33
B-17E Fortress x 42

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufighter Mk 21: 1 damaged
B-26B Marauder: 8 damaged
B-17E Fortress: 1 destroyed, 3 damaged

Japanese Ships
CA Kinugasa, Bomb hits 1
CA Furutaka, Bomb hits 4, on fire
CA Mikuma, Bomb hits 1
CL Yura, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage
CA Chikuma, Bomb hits 1
CL Kinu, Bomb hits 1
The enemy cruisers withdrew to Soerabaja and did not sortie again. Reconnaisance indicates CL Yura is in dry dock at Soerabaja and has been attacked and hit several times.

Allied forces in Burma carried out a reconnaissance in force on the city of Pagan and allied forces have occupied the outskirts of the city. The Japanese have moved large forces to defend.

In the Carolines, Woleai was captured in a fast attack that yielded an intact airfield. P38s are now being staged from Woelai to atatck enemy aircraft over Guam.
On April 18th 44 Superfortress make an appearance over Guam

It is quite clear to the Japanese that an attack is planned for either the Marianas or the Palau group.
Anticipating this, a Japanese reinforcement task force delivers much needed troops and materiel to Guam.
Allied forces cannot intercept in time before the supplies and reinforcements are unloaded, but a fast raid is mounted

Guam invasion going well. The well entrenched Japanese forces are being worn down. Lacking supply, and beset by 6 USMC divisions, and two tank regiments, they should not last long. Additional reinforcements are on the way, with the Americal Division scheduled to arrive within the next week.
In China, Chengtu is beset by heavy Japanese forces, and only defended by Chinese support forces and the Indian 16th brigade. Faced with that opposition, British forces have ordered the evacuation of the 16th. Evacuation has been started via air, and the unit will then be ordered to withdraw by land.

CenPac reports the total absence of Japanese aircraft over the Marianas. At least the over the large airfields of Saipan, Tinian and Guam. It appears the B29s and B24s out of Truk have been able to provide air supperiority.
Serendipitously, it appears that most of the Japanese carriers are being refitted at this time. Allied command was concerned about the location of these powerful units
