ORIGINAL: BLUESBOB I got really curious as to the actual area each hex in WITP covers. Not knowing how to find the area of a six-sided figure, I made a square and two triangles and did the math from there. I came up with a figure of 8690 square miles. This is rounded off, it's a little higher. My question, which I'm going to research tonight...is the map accurate for area and distances? For instance: Singapore occupies a single hex, at 8690 square miles...that's a lot of Singapore! There's a lot of other examples. I want to check on the square miles that certain islands, like Luzon for example, actually cover. Just wondering...maybe I have too much time on my hands. Google "area" and "hexagon" and you can learn how to compute the area of a hex-a-gon (though the non-mathematicians among us should have better things to do ) But since we're waiting for 1.8.0.2 to get released, we happen to know the formula is 3 times the square-root of 3 ... divided by 2 ... quantity times the square of the radius ... or about 2,340 square feet. As to distortion, yes there is substantial distortion in all the witp maps .. some areas are worse than others. But as stated above, when doing 2D map from 3D Sphere .. you will have distortion, trick is to put it where it will matter the least. Perhaps we could elicit some information about the statement above and perhaps, even, something resembling a timetable for such an event.
