BLUESBOB -> Just wondering.... (10/3/2006 2:22:58 AM)

I got really curious as to the actual area each hex in WITP covers. Not knowing how to find the area of a six-sided figure, I made a square and two triangles and did the math from there. I came up with a figure of 8690 square miles. This is rounded off, it's a little higher.

My question, which I'm going to research tonight...is the map accurate for area and distances? For instance: Singapore occupies a single hex, at 8690 square miles...that's a lot of Singapore! There's a lot of other examples. I want to check on the square miles that certain islands, like Luzon for example, actually cover.

Just wondering...maybe I have too much time on my hands.

Nope, distortion will get you everytime with a flat map.

Google "area" and "hexagon" and you can learn how to compute the area of a hex-a-gon (though the non-mathematicians among us should have better things to do [:D])

But since we're waiting for 1.8.0.2 to get released, we happen to know the formula is 3 times the square-root of 3 ... divided by 2 ... quantity times the square of the radius ... or about 2,340 square feet.

As to distortion, yes there is substantial distortion in all the witp maps .. some areas are worse than others. But as stated above, when doing 2D map from 3D Sphere .. you will have distortion, trick is to put it where it will matter the least.

You mean 'square miles', right? [:D]

Well now...it seems I was working off erroneous information. I'd been told by someone, who shall remain nameless, that a hex was 60 miles per side. Big B (oops) now tells me that it's 60 miles across the center of a hex. That changes my calculations dramatically, cutting then down by more than half.

Perhaps we could elicit some information about the statement above and perhaps, even, something resembling a timetable for such an event.

Now that I've turned 40, I can only consider one thing at a time. Fortunately for me, it still works...[&o]

[:D]Uh .. yup .. if you plug in feet you get feet .. but if you plug in miles you'll get miles !!!

He thinks 40 is bad - try pushing 60 - though right now it is still at a bit of a distance - nor far enough, though. Or as my Daddy used to say - I'm not as good as I once used to be, but I'm as good once as I ever used to be.
