Frame rate Issue - 10/24/2006 3:39:15 AM

Greetings! I just replaced my graphics card yet I am still getting the "less the 25 frames" error.

Here are my computer vitals:

Pentium(R) 4 2.8GHz
512MB RAM
Radeon X1300 Video Card(pretty sure it 256MB)

With this beefed up vidoe card (I had the standard integrated crap the puter came with), I figured my fame rate issue would disappear. What am I doing wrong?

The two things that eat cycles are shadows and the instant replay.

You may want to drop one of them down if you are in the highest resolution.

Thanks.  I love the way the graphics look in the higher resolution, so I will turn the shadows and instant replay off.

I use one level down on the shadows and no replay, but your card is more powerful.

I suspect you can do one or the other.

During beta testing I was playing games with everything turned on and was getting a frame rate of about 25.  I changed shadows from the highest level to normal and my frame rate is now averaging about 65 and at times is over 85.  Everything else is still at the highest level. Oh that is with instant replay off, I will check to see what it is with instant on.

Instant Replay is stored in System memory so wouldn't impact much about your video card. If the game runs into low frame rates, it gets turned it off because it helps for some really low end systems that share video and system memory.

Some other things that can cause this;

Make sure all other software is off. MSN messager, Web Broswers, email, ICQ,etc.. everything. There should be nothing else showing on your task bar. You may also want to check for things running in the background. Some applications run in the background and never display any interface to the user. Quick Time's automatic update program is a good example of one of these types of resource hogs. Spyware or other malware also eat up system resources.

One other is any antivirus software you may be running. Maximum-Football reads and writes a lot of data to disk. Depending on what antivirus software you have, it can intercept these reads and writes and slow down the works because it's scanning the files. You might try turning that off (just remember to turn it back on after you're done).

In this particular instance, I think it's probably something else eating your CPU cycles rather than a problem with the video card. Although you may wish to ensure you have the most recent drivers.

I can confirm that instant replay doesnt impact frame rate much.  I just played a game with instant replay on, and my frame rate was still well above 65 and sometimes was over 100.  Just taking the shadow off or set them to normal and you will see great increas in frame rate.

I turned the shadows off and I still only get about a 33 frame rate. Is there anything else I can do?

33 FPS is fine.  That's about what I get.

I thought the sucess of some plays was dependant upon your frame rate. Has this changed?

Yes the frame rate, or a very low frame rate does impact the success of plays.  In beta testing I had all graphics at their highest settings and was getting a frame rate of about 25.  I ran a few CPU vs CPU games with that frame rate and in one game one team rushed for over 600 yards, the defensive reaction was terrible.  This was the case with all games run at that frame rate, running plays, especially outside looked very good but also were getting hugh gains.  I then changed Shadows form high to normal and my frame rate went over 60.  With that frame rate the game is very realistic, a long run may be over 20 yards but most runs will be between 0 and 10.  I just finnshed a CPU vs CPU game in a test league and both teams had between 150-200 yards rushing.

One thing, David has said that there should be no difference in play performance in games with a frame rate of 35 vs 65.  Once you get past a frame rate threshold of about 30 then performance is the same no matter what the rate.  Under 30 and you will have much different results than those with it above.

Okay, looks like there is some confusion here.

The build that Dolemite73 has uses a frame rate limiter. The game caps out at 32-33 frames a second. No matter what is done to the machine, that version is not going to get past 32 or 33 FPS.

The builds the testers have do not have this frame rate cap so they can get very high frame rates. After much testing to ensure that everything worked as I'd hoped, I have removed the frame rate cap for R3. The result is much smoother animations. There does not seem to be any difference in game play (player reactions, animations, stats, etc...) in the game once you past the 30FPS point. This is expected as everything about the game was designed to be executed at 30FPS or higher.

The reason the cap was placed there was that in older builds extreme changes in frame rate would cause problems for the ball physics. These extreme changes would occure as the camera would follow the ball and be rendering fewer player models to the screen. The fewer player models to render, the higher the frame rate.

This problem was fixed some time ago and the cap removed.

Thanks for the explaination David.  I bought this game in March and have sat and waited patiently knowing that this game had unlimited potential.  I can't wait to see what R3 has.  I may finally be able to retire my FB Pro game.
