You have to love Cleveland class CL's and Fletcher class DD's

For one DD with heavy damage I think I will sink 4 Jap DD's

I expect Cowpens to be ok but this TF is running on fumes and will need to withdraw south to re arm anyway

A bloody day in the air !!!!!!

2 waves of Jap bombers attacked a carrier TF coming to hell with the losses and the allied pilots rose to meet them warned of their approach by radar but it wasnt enough USS Independence ate 2 fish and will be out of the fight for a while !!!!

(That was 50% CAP so my pilots rose of their own accord !!!)

Meantime the attack of 3rd USMC Div, 33rd US Div and my armour carries on up the peninsula brushing aside innefectual resistance !!!

can you fly in more troops to malaysia so that you don't have to run thegauntlet of DDs and air attacks?

Not really medk only my PBY's are in range !!!!

OK its time to cure the cancer that is Singapore clearly the straits are off limits until it is neutralised so the attack is ordered

5 Bomber Gps of B29's 250 ships from Banja
1 Recon Sqn from Kuala Lumper

4 Seperate Bases have fighters supporting the attack

Malacca has about 100 top line fighters on sweep and about 50 on escort (mostly P40N's)
Carriers in malacca port have about another 150 FM2's mostly - 50/50 on escort sweep

Kuala Lumper has 60 P38's and 36 F4U1D's

Wasp TF has about 120 F6F's and 36 F4U1D's
Bennington TF has the same in a different hex

OK so the plan is that these 4 bases will support the attack if 1 gets clouded out I will be ok, 2 is ok, 3 not so good, 4 is disaster stakes as 250 B29's go to their death !!!!

I have spread my risk but it is far from risk free operation

For all those allied players getting to 44 watch your AK's I would kill for 50 more now on the West Coast run.

I have about 2m (1m just leaving or loading at West Coast) tonnes at sea at present with about 500k at Darwin and the same at Rabaul/ Kwaj/ Tarawa and Pearl

But ITS NOT Enough

Allied LBA eats supplies at a huge rate of knots.

Only Malaya of my forward bases is in decent shape with 150k all the others are between 30 - 50k which is not enough.

To run proper continuos offensive ops the allies need about 600,000 tonnes a MONTH arriving at the front that does not include fuel or stockpiling for future operations so 85 - 90 Full AK's a month

It takes about 6 weeks for AK's to make the trip Australia - West Coast so a round trip is about 12 weeks

So allowing for no dumping of supplies and no down time the allies need a MINIMUM of 255 - 270 Large AK's full time on the West Coast run in 44.

Any disruption is nasty.

This is why a CENTPAC offensive is really worth thinking about the same strength offensive can be launched with half that level of AK support.

Fighting out of North Aus is hard on my supply lines I find I am pulling AK's off of amphib support duties to assist with supply hauling.

Unfortuantely decisions I make today will take 6 - 12 weeks to make themselves felt at the front.

p.s. 43 MUST be used to forward dump supplies at likely offensive springboard sites do not get tempted into wholesale use of AK's for amphib ops you will need every single one !!!

How do you run your supply train??
Do you get a large TF of AK's and send out one large TF to PH or do they go through Pago Pago (or someplace down there) to Australia??  Do you keep the size the same or as available for transport??
I have played to late '43 against the AI and try to keep the AK TF from 5 to 10 ships and only escort them once they get close to potential harm.
Just curious about how you do it as so few of us players have gotten as far as you.

It varies to be honest

I have some on the direct route to Aus
Some going to Tarawa or Kwaj
Some going to PH
Some to rabaul

Tankers are more trouble as they need to replenish and again I mix it up typically I have some TF's on autoconvoy to my nodal bases others heading to a holding base before deciding where the suplies are needed (Canton is good for this).

My convoys vary from 5 - 10 AK's and 3 - 5 tankers with escort when KB is still a threat to 50 AK, 30 Tanker super convoys often covered in the exposed areas by forward deploying carriers.

I have so many CVE's/DE's now that most convoys are reasonably well protected have a decent chance against most raiders.

Continuos ops by 4E and 2E bombers plus FB's just eat supplies.

More than a tactical wargame this is now turning into the hunt for AK's and supply stockpiles

I was expecting to attack from CENTPAC to the marianas in June and to fight a 1 - 2 month battle there so I had stockpiled c 2.5m supply and 2m fuel - this was going on throughout Hydra.

I then switched my focus of attack and based it out of North Aus and SWPAC but by thta stage I had exhausted my stockpiled supply and fuel supporting Hydra i.e. I had less than 1.5m supply and fuel on hand going forward.

I had planned on restocking during the Marianas but obviously plans change.

With hindsight I may have been better to have went in at the Marianas purely on logistics grounds

Just to give one example

Banja now has several B29Gps operating from it its MONTHLY supply requirement with no repairs to A/C, upgrades to facilites etc etc is 85,000 tonnes.

To put that in context it is about a 6 week round trip from my terminus on East Coast of Aus to Banja through hostile waters for the last week so to just meet the supply needs of that one AF requires about 30 7,000 tonne AK's plus escorts and escort carriers

That one base is absorbing 14% of all supplies shipped into SWPAC.

After the next series of raids to close Singapore I will be forced on logistical grounds to withdraw all B29's back to Australia.

I can only operate them for about 3 days and any thoughts of putting them into Malaya for more than a single week of raids is a pipe dream until I get the logistics sorted.

I know it sounds crazy but the c 1.5m supply I have in SWPAC/Aus/ -> Malaya is no where near enough for the offensives I am running.

I have about 60 AK's at Malacca at present and I need them all out of there and back on cargo runs ASAP.

Now that my forces are ashore and operating I think I will need to pause for a few weeks to allow stockpiles to recover.

It is ALL about logistics for now !!!

p.s. to all Japanese players sink every AK you can find at all times throughout the game !!!

1. In 44 a Jap Carrier for 15 - 20 allied AK's sunk or damaged is a GOOD trade
2. Commerce Raiding is your friend
3. Dislocation caused by the threat of commerce raiding is almost as good.

Do NOT let the allies send Brit AK's to augment the West Coast Run keep the route from India closed if I was able to supply Aus/Malaya from India this would be a cakewalk !!!!

But the previous allied players suffered horrideous AK losses in the first years of the war because of PzB's agressiveness, so given your situation, you're still maintaining a very good rythm in my opinion.

Aye perhaps but it is a real pinch point now 200 more AK's would make me comfortable.

I am also still short of escorts for my Carriers last week I had 2 CL's and a CLAA escorting 3 fleet and 2 Light Carriers Fletchers and Cleveland class ships are capable but that really should have been 2 TF's with perhaps another 10 escorts at least 1 BB or CA to each.

I just dont have them available

Richelieu is now in West COast Yards as is Maryland 2 more are en route.

5 Carriers are in refit

I am just stretched all round but I know that every day I give PZB makes it harder.

My Armour has stormed up the coast of Malaya because he didnt have forts built because I struck deep.

The need to exploit and keep going forward is driving me on every day I wait it becomes so much harder and so much more bloody

Speed, Audacity (Lunacy ???) and a willingness to take Admin risks are what is driving me BUT I always need to bear in mind how Slim defeated the Japanese it was all about logistics and letting them exhaust themselves I am very close to the point now in the West where logistical risks are tipping over to be logisitical suicide. I am not quite  there yet but I can see it coming on the horizon.

I have 4 Corps in Australia/New Britain and I DONT have the logistics to forward deploy !!!!

The 6 ish Divs in Malaya are pretty much all I can deploy and support while I am running B29's from Borneo.

Chinese are out of it thats one theatre I dont want to reopen I will bomb PZB IN China but not FROM China

But it is likely to be one or 2 harrassing raids rather than a campaign because of my supply status

With India lost, I figured there wasn't much chance of opening up the Chinese front -- although your success in Malaysia could open up a path to the Chinese, couldn't it?

Sorry for all the questions, but what's the current VP status?

No problem with questions I actually have no idea of VP's I suspect I am still behind but I have not looked in months I want to win by DESTROYING the Japanese points are an irrelevance

I will check tonight.

I suspect if I advance out of Malaya to try and re open the China front PZB would feel free to use China Army units to stop me.

Its a can of worms I just dont want to open.

I probably should check if he would use them to defend in Burma or Thailand it could affect my next moves

Andy, that was a very interesting little discussion of logistics and it's importance. You're saying much the same thing the commanders IRL said. I guess Matrix did something right after all (if you listen to some people around here).

As a JFB, thanks for the suggestions. I have wondered about that. I really don't know how much supply is required by the Allies in the later war offensives, nor do I really know how many AK they get. The Japanese early war offensives really were on a showstring.

Great AAR. It's very interesting to read your perspective and then read PzB's take on the same thing.

Still no turn but I have been thinking apart from the Malayan campaign and perhaps a few little clean up operations I hate to say it but I am going to need to pull in my horns for about 6 weeks I cannot keep up the tempo in the air on the ground or at sea that I have been maintaining I dont have the supplies.

I need to get the AK's currently in Malaya back onto the West Coast or local runs ASAP and rest my active fleet.

I still have supply stockpiled in rear bases accross the south pacific and it needs to be consolidated.

My combat arm could just about keep up continuos ops but my logistics cannot.

At the end of 43 I ordered a complete halt after I captured Rabaul for 2 months while I reorganised and got ready for Hydra I almost need to do it again for the drive on Japan.

I dont want to but if my attacks are to be on a proper prepared basis with rested organised ships with adequate replacement aircraft and pilots etc etc then I need to do it properly. (slow but sure the Monty way !!!)

I can pick off a few lesser bases but I need to dramatically scale back the forward deployed aircraft

2 Massive convoys with over 1 million supply and fuel are loading in the west coast escorted by several fleet carriers.

The transit time to SWPAC is 6 - 8 weeks.

I think between consolidating supply and getting the AK's out of the Malacca strait I am done for a while its been a good run I will finish of Singapore and Malaya with the forces in place and begin the planning for the next stage.

(If I was playing the "game" I could probably continue without the pause and send in troops un prepared although against an opponent as dangerous as PZB I am not sure thats a good idea !!! but I am not I am fighting a "war" I will therefore accept what the logisticians have been telling me and slow down a little Wasile/ Borneo/ Sulawesi/ all sorts of places will lose some of their aircraft and engineers will be redistributed i need an admin pause to rebuild some stockpiles)

p.s in case anyone is in any doubt I HATE ADMIN PAUSES they drive me batty ---- but thye are neccessary

CONCLUSION

To all you players out there limiting CAP to 50% and stacking no more than 4 USN Carrier in one hex makes the game play a LOT more realistically. I suspect it would also make the IJN play more historicallyif the unsinkable KB in the ealry game if a 50% CAP and no more than 6 IJN Fleet carrier per hex rule was adopted.

Seriously it is worth thinking about I got egg on my face and suffered casualties that dont feel over the top for securing Malaya - certainly made it more tense ..... an interesting day

Yes, thanks for that Andy. Even if the war lingers one, no-one may criticize your ability, don't worry - I'm sure there are really few allied commanders who'd like to be in your position right now. I am sure PzB is happy too to have such a capable and fairplay opponent.

I was throwing things at the screen when those strikes came in but then that cruiser TF ran smack dab into Iowa I call yesterday a victory ofr PZB but not as bad as it could be.

(had he committed his remaining Battleships yesterday could have been VERY VERY Nasty !!!)

Note to self : NEVER EVER UNDERESTIMATE PZB WITH SURFACE TF's HE USES THEM LIKE  A KENDO MASTER

OK quiet turn my supply convoys have now left the West Coast so the clock starts now for future operations about 1m supply and 1m fuel are en route covered by several carriers.

I am concentrating additional carriers as they are repaired at Pearl.

Georgetown fell and interestingly 27 Sqn with Blenheim NF's appeared the next day obviously hiding in the hills for three years !!!!! Hey I am happy a NF Sqn will come in handy whne upgraded to Beaus

I am starting to move my forces south leaving the 24th Div to hold the north

It is time to reconcentrate at Malacca and hit Johore and the Singapore time is marching on I want this campaign over so I can move on to the next phase !!!!
