During a recent enemy river crossing, one of my snipers chalked up 26 kills. He was in a hide position on the river bank and had a clear line of fire north south out to max effective range. His primary targets were the rafts that the enemy was using to cross the river. Secondary targets were four mortar positions located three hexes away on the far bank. The second sniper in the team had 12 confirmed kills, all rafts. I have renamed these two Shuttgart and Gordan and will keep the community apprised of their future kills.

Out of curiosity, how much ammo does the average sniper (in SP:WaW) carry?

SPWAW Enhanced- 40 to 60 rounds depending on Nation, plus more deadly in Enhanced.

I think I'm going to have to find time to play a campaign soon, to allow my troops to rack up kills etc... I don't really bother looking at individual unit stats when I'm playing PBEM - there's no real point.

I'm still trying to figure out how to properly use snipers.  (Here I go again: )  One of the unique units in the Enhanced FV OOBs are the USMC Scout/Snipers.  These 6-man teams had a couple of guys armed with Springfield sniper rifles, but they are classed as "Special Forces", not snipers.  This takes away the sniper bonus for hit probability.   They are primarily scouts, but were also used as front-line assault troops ( William Deane Hawkins and his Scout/Snipers at Tarawa is the most famous example).   It was for that reason that I gave them the "Special Forces" classification.

rememeber these units also have increased FC and carry a sniper rifle in slot 3 which has increased HE kill stats.

One of my online opponents always uses them to infiltrate behind my lines...

Sorry about that, Alby. The Marines had their own version of "Green Berets" way back when. As so often happens, it took the Army a while to catch up with the ideas the Jarheads came up with. The USMC's imagination and foresightedness has been underestimated many times. Another reason why I love them.

"I am sad to say that Gordan was killed during a recent airborne operation in France. Shuttgart, Gordan, and a rifle squad were dropped behind enemy lines with the rest of their airborne company. The C-47 came under heavy fire and the two snipers found themselves seperated from the main body. The members of the rifle squad were killed moments after landing by a MG42 while the two snipers moved towards the sound of gunfire. Shuttgart took the high ground and Gordan took the middle. The machine gun team was dispatched and then the battle began. Moving by bounds, the enemy moved in close to the sniper positions, but the deadly fire kept them at bay. more than 18 dead bodies lay in the field in front of the snipers. Knowing that if they moved the enemy would resume their attacks on the airborne company, the two snipers remained in place. The two snipers lasted 6 turns before enemy 150mm rounds started to fall. Shuttgart was able to deeper into his hide position but Gordan was killed with a direct hit. His replacement is enroute from the repo depot and it has been been mentioned his name is Hathcock. The two snipers tied up the majority of two platoons of infantry and a majority of the enemy arty assets."

I guess this should be posted in the AAR section. If a moderator would move it there I would not object. Historical note: Gordan and Shuttgart were awarded the Medals of Honor during operations in Somalia. Gordans replacement carries the name I am sure Gunny will know.

Player note: I never move my snipers more than 1 hex a turn and move after 2 shots. They can be used against enemy vehicles, causing them to button up or cause a critical hit. I move them to the OBJ by tank and dismount them as they near the enemy. I did not set out to purchase the snipers in the first place. I had 22 core points remaining and decided to give them a try. They did so well in the first battle I decided to keep the. In an another game I am trying to use the Soviet AT Rifleman as snipers, but have not had the success of their American counterparts.

Hope you enjoy.

Carlos Hathcock? Yeah, I know the name.

Here's a brief biography of him: http://www.grunt.com/scuttlebutt/corps-stories/heroes/carloshathcock.asp

He passed away in 1999.

I thought you might enjoy that. I hope you do not mind the fact he is wearing an Army Uniform.

I can attest to the effectiveness of those Snipers against even armored cars. I had a German 6 wheel AC destroyed in one hit by a lucky Yugoslavian Sniper. Plenty of Jeeps and other soft vehicles have found themselves in a salvage yard as a direct result of a good hit from snipers before as well.

Jason,

Thanks for the sniper lesson: 2 shots - move 1 hex.

What range(s) is your preference? (stealth vs. accuracy)

I cannot give you an exact range. It depends on the target and terrain type. I try to snipe off the units that have already suffered losses and are in a route. For the displaced crewman, I will snipe at almost any range. For routed infantry, I tend to snipe where my unmodified chance to hit is +80%. Infantry have a nasty habit of going from retreating to pinned and returning fire. Because the sniper has no smoke, I will divert medium mortar fire for smoke missions but will not give up my 105's or 155's to save a sniper.

In a static defence, I try to couple my sniper with a a 2 man scout team armed with M1 rifles. That gives me an additional spotter and it has range over the .45 cal Thompson. This tactic has worked well in the past. I keep an escape route clear to my rear and a secondary firing position in mind prior to shooting. I remain in position as the situation permits. If the enemy is running past me in full route, I will stay there and shoot them as they pass. If they are determined, I will shoot 2-4 times before moving. I have seen the enemy use arty fire against my snipers and send armored units in my direction.

I keep a yellow sticky pad next to my computer and tally the kills on that for each sniper. If you look on his unit screen it may only list a 1/2 of those kills because it list these as total unit kills. I thought I would clear that up before somebody called me on it. Of course a rifle squad may have more kills when you tally them this way, but it is not one man with one rifle. Because of their limited allocated space, I will always send snipers in with para drops or gliderborne forces. There is always room for one sniper.

Jason,

Thanks again. I'm in the middle of a Soviet long campaign. I'll add a sniper in my next battle and give it a try.
