I cannot give you an exact range. It depends on the target and terrain type. I try to snipe off the units that have already suffered losses and are in a route. For the displaced crewman, I will snipe at almost any range. For routed infantry, I tend to snipe where my unmodified chance to hit is +80%. Infantry have a nasty habit of going from retreating to pinned and returning fire. Because the sniper has no smoke, I will divert medium mortar fire for smoke missions but will not give up my 105's or 155's to save a sniper. In a static defence, I try to couple my sniper with a a 2 man scout team armed with M1 rifles. That gives me an additional spotter and it has range over the .45 cal Thompson. This tactic has worked well in the past. I keep an escape route clear to my rear and a secondary firing position in mind prior to shooting. I remain in position as the situation permits. If the enemy is running past me in full route, I will stay there and shoot them as they pass. If they are determined, I will shoot 2-4 times before moving. I have seen the enemy use arty fire against my snipers and send armored units in my direction. I keep a yellow sticky pad next to my computer and tally the kills on that for each sniper. If you look on his unit screen it may only list a 1/2 of those kills because it list these as total unit kills. I thought I would clear that up before somebody called me on it. Of course a rifle squad may have more kills when you tally them this way, but it is not one man with one rifle. Because of their limited allocated space, I will always send snipers in with para drops or gliderborne forces. There is always room for one sniper.
