The first thing one has to do when starting either big scenario is put all the generals into place. For the CSA, for instance, all the Generals start around Richmond and are not assigned to any units. Is anyone else annoyed by this?

I wonder if someone who knows their ACW history could create a scenario start with all of the generals (or at least all of the historical ones) placed properly.

Or is there something about starting a game that requires all generals to be placed in the capital? If that's the case, maybe someone could at least write up a list of where they should be. Then I could move them once and create a save game from which to start new campaigns. I like the idea of generals being in their historical positions at game start.

Paul,
You cannot start a general in a container unit, but you can set the province where the generals start by editing Commanders.txt. It's a tab-separated text file. It's best to use Excel or Open Office but you can do it with notepad, it just won't be lined up all nice for you. Use the copy in the scenario folder rather than the data folder. The files in the scenario folder overrides the ones in the Data folder, but it doesn't appear that they all override.

The column to edit is StartProv. Change it to the value of the province you want found in AcwProvinces.txt. You may also need to change StartDate and Chance to make them show up.

Thank you for the information!

Does anyone have a list of where the most important generals should historically be placed?

Mdpeyrot is right about how to modify this. You'd need to know the numbers assigned to the province to do so, and these can be found in ACWProvinces.txt.

Using Victory Games Civil War , For July, I come up with:

Price - Osage, Missouri
Polk - Memphis
AS Johnston - Nashville
J Johnston - Shenandoah
Magruder - Rappahanock
Huger - Norfolk

Lyon - Black River, Missouri
Fremont - St. Louis
McClellan - Parkersburg WV
McDowell - DC (AOP)
Butler - Ft Monroe

I had this all set up in my own scenario, but I accidently overwrote it :(
