Status: offline 		It was never the USS OWASCO. It was always the USCGC OWASCO. Beaucoup guns for a CG Cutter (4 x 5"/38, 8 x 40mm, 8 20mm, 4 Y-guns, 2 DC racks). The class never quite made it into the War coming on line in the latter half of 1945. Shortly after the war most of the armament was removed.

Status: offline 		Slightly off-topic, since she didn't see service in the Pacific, but here's another Coast Guard Cutter that saw service in WWII. Can anyone name her?




Edit: extra-special bonus points if you can name where the photo was taken.

Status: offline 		165 ft class...CGC Escanaba, Tahoma, Algonquin, or Comanche maybe. Not the Onondaga cause that one did serve in the Pacific in WWII (pictured below)

The pic looks overexposed - but is that snow on the hills and dock? i'll hazard a guess that this is the Aleutians.

EDIT: Whoops - you said NOT in the Pacific (D'OH!) Let's change the guess to Newfoundland (and if pressed further - let's say St. John's)

I have to say that the location of the pic is quite obscure, and frankly doesn't have much to do with WWII. I mentioned it only due to personal interest - I have family from the area & lost a 2nd cousin-thriced removed (or something like that) on the Escanaba.

That's Escanaba at her home - the great war-time port of Grand Haven, Michigan. She was lost in the Atlantic '43 with only two survivors and it was fairly devastating to the town - annual memorial services are still held for her there.

Spence's pics reminded me of her.

Status: offline 		What brought these ships in my mind was they (the Haida and Onandaga) were both included in CHS but as Taney Class (Secretary Class really). I knew they weren't that so I went looking and found out what type they really were. The Haida had some serious anti-sub armament it appears. CGC Onandaga was not so impressive. Incidentally the photo of Haida is labelled as being from 1945 but it's not. By then the 5"/51s were gone and it had 3"/50 AA guns in their place.

500! that'd be better than the Iowa! No not quite that high, but very impressive : 50 deck, 90 belt and 100 tower. So about the same as an Atlanta class CLAA.

Status: offline 		The Secretary Class cutters were built with 3/4 inch shell plating (double than your typical DDs shell plating), shipboard legend having it that this was a Rooseveltian effort to promote the US steel industry.  I know that the ones I served on had an easier time in sea ice because of the extra steel but I can say for sure that it was all mild steel and there was not one mm of armor anywhere on the ship except in the old flak jackets we had for some of the .50 cal crew.

As far as I could find, the Owasco commissioned in May, 1945. Hmmm... If only I could find some more complete data... and a ship side...
