AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/13/44

Air Combat

We attempted to hit the enemy convoys heading for Singapore again.
Uncoordinated strikes ruined chances to inflict much damage. Most of our fighters
escorted a bomber unit to Singapore and got slaughtered - had forgot to reduce bomber range to 4 hexes.

Still, we managed to hit 2 cve's and another 22 Hellcats were shot down. A 1-5 loss ratio is acceptable in 1944,
especially since most our ac were semi trained and easily replacable. I'm going to keep on launching these strikes
as long as our training camps can replace losses and thus inflict a steady attrition on enemy ships and ac!

TA Mike! Think it will be good, you have a lot to show for yourself
Question is how to mix family with WitP...sleep will be in short supply I guess

I would like to go back to Brissy, but that's not up to me to decice!-)

Todays air strikes came mostly from Borneo as Andy kept his TF close to the coast.
A lone Betty put a torp into another cve and caused heavy damage. This was perhaps worth todays
sacrifices alone.

Todays events are mostly from Sumatra and Singapore.
Andy sends his bombers to Palembang and destroy some 150 ac on the ground.
Surprised he didn't do this before - most of my fighters havet to be on naval escort in order
to get a few bombers through. Without radar my fighters DOES NOT scramble when the alarm goes.

In Singapore the remnants are committing banzai charges.

Moving the Shokaku out of dock, finally the KB is ready for action again.

No more air strikes. Last defenders of Singapore got wiped out and the remnants updgraded to cadre units.
So we will be able to rebuild a division, tank regiment, 2 engineer regiments, coastal defense unit and a construction unit
and 2 Army HQs. 1 Naval HQ and an aviation regiment were evacuated before Andy closed Sing.

A cve sank outside of Singapore today and took with it 19 Wildcats and 8 Avengers.

Nice to se japanese CV's still alive.

Are you planning on keeping the ryuho in the TF ? seems to be a fair bit slower than the rest imo.

Planning to use the light carriers in a separate carrier TF and the four fast fleet carriers
in a more powerful striking group. Just have to find a suitable target....

Andy sent his bombers after most of our bases in the DEI today and destroyed some 176
ac on the ground. Mostly units training and rebuilding, very few fighters were on CAP.

Looks like another enemy offensive is right around the corner.
Let's wait and see what happens....

Been a while, RL events have kept me pre-occupied.

After the fall of Singapore Andy is busy planning his next offensive and can now concentrate
his bombers on bases in the DEI. Mostly catching damaged ac on the ground and cutting down everything
that's in the air a total of 170 jap ac are destroyed for some 30 allied.

Time to withdraw the larger air formations and use smaller interdiction units.

Got a few interesting plans brewing, just want Andy to committ to his next offensive first...

Andy has bombed a path between Northern Oz and up into Malaya. We still got enough bases,
supplies and ac to continue to harass the enemy in this area.

The Empire is still intact with major stocks of oil, supplies and industry at hand.
Major battles will be fought in 1945 and I doubt we can get more ready than we already are.
Andy will have to go all the way to Appomatox before the war comes to an end...

Not a lot to report really, the damaged destroyer escort we hit yesterday sank.
I have accelerated destroyers on the production line, going to need them all.

When I upgrade certain carrier air groups they increase in size. Could be good, but it
provides problems when they're on carriers and suddenly:
a) Make the air groups oversize
b) Lack experienced pilots

Tomorrow will be Christmas Eve 1944-45..

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 12/24/44

Sub/ASW Attacks

I was wondering where this asw attack took place...seems like one of my few patrol subs
ended up in the same hex as an enemy carrier TF heading west just NE of Marcus Island.

Didn't take much effort to sink the I-58!

Was a bit surprised as these ac appeared out of the blue.
Never sighted the enemy ships despite of several long range recon units on Wake and Marcus Island.

It's kinda scary, each time Andy ventures out with his cv's there are targets around.
Usually the ocean is empty for months between each supply convoy in this area.

This turned confused me...

1. Enemy carriers headed NNW of Marcus Island. Chasing my fleeing tankers which sailed the other way?
2. Enemy ships are approaching Wake Island. Invasion?
3. Enemy surface combat group is moving slowly east just NW of Pagan islan in the Marianas.
Was afraid it might be another carrier tf and launched only a smaller raid of kamikazes.

Three enemy destroyers were hit by big Peggy bomber 'rams' and left sinking.

Not sure what to make of this. I've not spotted much enemy shipping and activity in the East Pacific at all.
Until Andy actually lands at Wake Island I will assume it's a diversion.

Wake is a fortress with a captial F. Not sure Andy wants to do anything as painful as invading that atoll.

The only explanation I got is that Andy lost track of this TF returning to PH....
That was the last thing he would ever see of them. Probably low on fuel and stranded in a hopeless spot!

Bad spot

Operation Shogun!

Can we lure the enemy carriers to deplete their offensive and defensive strength and thus make
them vulnerable for counter-attack and force them to withdraw?

Given what Andy just experienced in his game vs Pauk I expect he will run for it. Still, if you press him closely as he retreats you can still achieve important attritional results.

Oh yes
Problem is that we have to fight a defensive battle and lure Andy into a trap.
Not the easiest of things to achieve. Need to keep the fleet in being.

Let us be patient and see what happens.

Wake will be a tough nut to crack and it will only provide Andy with another base from
where he can assault Marcus and go on to the Bonins. That wil trigger an all out defensive stand.

Andy landed no less than 3 divisions, 2 US and 1 Aus, as well as 6 tank battalions and support troops.
All in one day. Wake Island is so isolated that it's impossible to provide more than token support to the besieged troops there.

Must admit that I am still awaiting a major enemy offensive in the DEI. The US should be strong enough to perform 2 offensive
simultanously now.

I have ordered the reinforcement of Bonin and Iwo Jima. If Wake Island falls these bases will become threatened.
In 14 days a crack division from China will be released for Iwo Jima and several brigades are already being loaded for Bonin.

We can never allow the enemy to establish themselves on these islands.

I sent some comments regarding the number of troops that should be used on atolls. I've been trying to keep the number below
30k, but if Andy can land 55k in one day, I may have to increase this to 50k. Andy also mentioned that he observed that there were some 100k troops on bases in the Marianas. As far as I know non of the bases there are atolls. In the Palaus, yes...but
garrisons were much smaller on these bases.

Matrix should seriously consider stacking penalties on atolls. As the game works now it can easily become a bit bizare.
Because of some tech problems it may be a little while before the next post.

Mmmm a difficult judgement to make. For a successful attack a 3:1 superiority is quoted as being required. If you up the defenders to 50k any attacker would be looking to land 150k. This points as much towards the combat model as to the stacking problem. It doesn't help that all units in a hex defend against the point of attack, when they should be spread out in all round defence. No easy solution here.

True Tallyho, but without more than one obligatory shock attack it would be possible to wear
the defending garrison down gradually by rotating troops and keeping up a sea/air bombardment.

Lots of action on the way:

Marcus Island threatened

Andy is a bit audacious, Marcus Island isn't a walk in the park..and the Combined Fleet is still a powerful
force, especially when it can be concentrated and supported by LBA.

Let's see what we can get out of this
