I finally got my game in the mail the other day, after it went on a whirlwind tour of first the U.S., and then california. According to USPS tracking it actually bounced into and then out of state twice, and then toured all of the main hubs in northern califonia for a while (hitting some hubs multiple times). But in the end it did eventually get to my local PO. I think that next time I'll pay the extra freight for UPS, as a private company cannot afford to to be as inefficient as a governmental agency.

I managed to get the game installed. Sometimes it runs, sometimes I get errors and it wont run. I only have 512 megs of ram so that's likely the problem, and I know about the fixes so no worries on that score. But I did have one obsevation and a question.

While installing the game, it asks you input the seriel number that is printed on the cd. Printing on the cd is a great improvement over how I received the seriel # for WitP, but it"s kind of hard to read while the cd is in the drive. Perhaps if you put the # on disk #2 it would make things easier. A minor point to be sure, but just a thought.

Now to my main question. At the beginning of the install there is a warning about not having your antivirus program running, as it might cause problems. Fair enough, AV programs are notorious for causing all kinds of problems. But at the end of the install I'm asked if I want to install some antivirus program that I've never heard of before. Huh? If Norten A-V is problematic, some no name program thrown in for free makes me a bit nervous. Is this a Matrix program, or did DR tack it on? Surprising me at the end of a game install is hardly the way to distribute a non related product.

Is it any good? Is it bad? Should I have installed it? Will it work better with Matrix products? Since I had no clue what to do at the time, I declined to install it. Has anyone else installed it, and if so, how did it work for you?

Any information would be most welcome.

do not install it! Never have more than one antivirus running on your computer or it will cause all kinds of problems.

Yeah, That's what I figured too. But why is it there at all? Just seems like odd place to find an AV program.

I have two anti-virus programs running on my systems (AVG and NOD32) with no problems whatsoever.

The anti-virus warning at the start is mainly aimed at some of the more intrusive AV programs like Norton and McAfee that don't know when to keep their hands off and can cause installation issues.

The NOD32 AV program was included by us as a special offer. We tested this and found it to be the best AV program in terms of its memory footprint and impact on performance (i.e. virtually none). In any case, it's a free trial and is a piece of cake to remove if you installed it without meaning to. There's nothing detrimental about it and for those customers who don't have any anti-virus solution installed, it's a good one to get.

Regards,

- Erik

Erik,

Are you running both AVG and NOD32 active file system scanning etc or is one for on demand?

You can definitely have multiple AV's installed on your pc but only one as active.

You can have multiple anti-virus programs installed but its not good to have two program’s same time active at background.

Some anti-virus installer’s even forces uninstall of other anti-virus programs they detect pre-installed during install because of this.

I personally have three anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-rootkit scanners installed but only one of them is active backround protection and others I use just on-demand manual scanning.

I must add that I also found it little intrusive that I found anti-virus program part of the installer from game I have bought with full price like FoF.

Personally I’m heavily against all kind of bundled software where you get programs that you did not ordered in to your computer along with main program. I do understand it little bit if program is free of charge or very low price but not with standard priced software. If you order a program with bundled software there should be some kind of discount because of it.

I'm sure if you really must market some other software there is less intrusive ways for it than bundle it part of installer like providing link to download / marketing page of program.
