There is a 1950 ? japanese movie about soldiers cut off from their unit in the Phillipines who take to hiding in the jungle and breaking up into rival foraging gangs, one (or more) of which turn cannibal. It is the most freightening and scary and the greatest war movie I ever saw. But I can't remember the name of it, nor the director, who made a couple other japanese point-of-view war movies.

The sceen in the Thin Red Line after they overrun the japanese camp/hospital is a serious homage to the japanese film I'm trying to think of, and when the GI is pulling the gold fillings out of the mouths of the corpses-- that's pretty much the level of depravity that is a constant in the japanese film.... damn. I can't search for it on line if I can't remember the name....

Anybody ever see it?

Sounds like something of a shocker...though from what I've read about those "left to whither on the vine" not that far over the top.

One probably not quite so "depraved" but certainly different than the normal 1950ish Allied war movie is "Yesterday's Enemy"...Brits cut off in Burma...a lot of old cliches take new turns.

I did a search on IMDB and came up with "Nobi" (1959). The plot summary is:

It is the Philipines, 1945. The Japanese Imperial Army has been reduced to a ragtag mob hiding in the jungles. Among them is Pvt. Tamura. The situation goes from bad to worse and in the face of the brutal conditions facing the men, some go insane and resort to murder and cannibalism. In the midst of this, Pvt. Tamura tries to survive without giving up his principles.

According to Amazon.com, it'll be released on DVD on March 13th of this year.

Hope this helps you!

Bill

Thanks a million, that's it! I went to Wiki and started bringing up Japanese movie directors one at a time....but couldn't find it. Many thanks!
