Redan -> OT: name of japanese war movie? (2/2/2007 10:39:59 PM)

There is a 1950 ? japanese movie about soldiers cut off from their unit in the Phillipines who take to hiding in the jungle and breaking up into rival foraging gangs, one (or more) of which turn cannibal. It is the most freightening and scary and the greatest war movie I ever saw. But I can't remember the name of it, nor the director, who made a couple other japanese point-of-view war movies. The sceen in the Thin Red Line after they overrun the japanese camp/hospital is a serious homage to the japanese film I'm trying to think of, and when the GI is pulling the gold fillings out of the mouths of the corpses-- that's pretty much the level of depravity that is a constant in the japanese film.... damn. I can't search for it on line if I can't remember the name.... Anybody ever see it?
