Got some 913k HI points left as well as 1.3 mill oil. Can't remember resources, but some 2-3 million I guess.
No worries we'll run out over the next year

Guess that's what upset Andy so much, ammo expandages in surface combat - especially against non combatants.
The advantages his destroyers have against my fleets are enormous to say the least...

All bases in Home Islands are fortified, most with 9 forts and a regiment or full division in place.
No way he can make landings there anytime soon. Not with the problems the Bonins are giving him.

Thinking about air or sea bombardments?

I think he means your troops on Iwo.. with all the artillery there, how much supply does it use to put them on "bombardment" rather than defensive?

Excellent defence my good sir! The Emperor will be pleased that the Marcus Hendan Garrison fought to the last man.....

Actually, I did want to ask you about that but did the Garrison literally fight to the last man? Or were they casualties from surrendering soldiers?

And also, what is it like to get a Banzai charge? Does it inflict more casualties upon the enemy? I did read in the manual it is only done as a result of near annihilation by the enemy.

Lastly, in regards to your defences, is there anyway that Andy could take both Iwo Jima and Bonin successfully or could this turn very literally into a stalemate? I was wondering, like with your air and naval units being less effective in 1945 if that also applied to the army itself, considering that Japanese casualty rates were also alot higher than their Allied counterparts.

BANZAI! FOR THE EMPEROR!

I was thinking about gaining our rookie troops some exp with these bombardments attacks.
Not very efficient at present, but we got 63k supplies ashore and another 50k unloading. So I thought a good
trashing could be worth a few supplies

It's a good way to measure the strength of the opposing force. I'm trying to land as many artillery pieces as
possible. When we got a clear advantage we should be inflicting some 2-400 casualties pr day.

Oh yes, the garrison at Marcus all fought to the last man. No surrenders
Banzai charges sometimes cause some casualties, but not alot. Sometimes Jap garrisons are incredible difficult to
wipe out though.

THAT is a good question Jap Spirit! I have no idea what Andy will do next. He seems just as determined to capture the
Bonins as Hitler was on Stalingrad. The amount of reinforcements pooring in will make it extremely difficult for him.
We can't disregard that Andy is right now scrounging 300k men for an all out effort. He will actually need them if we
put 100k troops there including a 1000 guns. Personally I think it's madness. He's loosing way too many first line ships
and ac. Even if he manage to take Iwo Jima, it will come as such an horrendous cost.

My air units are NOT less effective in 1945, neither is the army. Andy's radar equipped ships and high speed fighters are
just SO much more effective than mid 1942 vintage unit were.

Been a busy day, still, managed to take a preliminary look at the next turn, and here are some of the highlights:

2 enemy carriers hit by kamikazes
5 enemy destroyers sunk
Another batch of enemy naval ac shot down!

No serious damage was suffered by Japan, but another 300 ac were shot down.
The Northern Area Army has been unloaded within range of the Bonins and another large Area Army HQ is unloading at Bonin.
This should increase our defensive value by xx%!

Will give you a detailed report tomorrow! Here's a screen showing our heroic frigates fighting 3 enemy destroyers to give up
their pursuit of our transports. Later in the day dive and torpedo bombers shattered the enemy!

With your Destroyer losses, keep in mind that half of them entered the battle already damaged.

They were, but that only applied to the smallest TF. The big TF with 2 CA's and 10 undamaged destroyers
were still completely destroyed by a dozen enemy destroyers.... and we had far better night combat exp and radar as well.

Since I had moved that last large TF away from Bonin at full speed, you shall know that I was surprised to see them zoom back into
the hex to intercept during daylight phase Lots of unfortunate losses, but that's war for you.

Still, I got the feeling that we're dragging Andy into a mud pit were he will grind to a halt.
If we can ruin his fleet and trap his armies, the war will be all but over

The stakes are high, losses extreme, but we will prevail!

Your best Army Air Force Fighter
They're numerous and capable both as fighters, intercepters and bombers.

They will struggle against Corsairs, but can be evenly matched against Hellcats if they have good pilots
and doesn't suffer to much from the advantage provided by Allied radar.

I'm preparing another die hard stand in order to force Andy to withdraw his carriers.
Have to protect our transports for another few days. After this I will stand down our defenses.
The use of 500 engineers each on Bonin and Iwo will make it very difficult for Andy to close both fields.

I need to send my fighters to China to rest and receive replacement ac. Morale is woefully low in many units,
understandable enough. The Navy also requires some R&R. Will be another 6-8 months before it will be fully battle ready
again. Doubt Andy will be back in a while after we defeat him in the Bonins

With the amount of troops I'm bringing in to the islands he will have to land another 300k troops to stand a chance.
Even then it will be difficult. Maybe we can start a massive LBA campaign against the stranded troops on Iwo to wear them
down? Our long range bombers from the Marianas and Home Island can peck away at them.

Rain tomorrow: unstable weather is our best friend. Please shut down Marcus and a few cv's tomorrow Tor!!
Sometimes this creates openings for our naval bombers. It's a good thing to have low morale, if they meet the Uber CAP they
turn around instead of getting massacred.

Do you think a surprise strike with the Taiho against Andy's supply lines behind Marcus Island could be worthwhile?
60 bombers and 20 fighters could inflict some damage on transports and cripples.

Industry 01/45 vs Industry 11/44

Ca 2.5 months since the last industry comparison. According to my calculations we have
reserves to last throughout 1945! The last 2 months of the war we'll manage on what we got
in the pools.

That's right, Jap ca's doesn't have much in the way of radar...

Not a particular good day as large number of bombers set of against the enemy carriers without
an escort. Still, the USS Essex is now reported as having heavy damage.

I am pulling out most of my Army fighters for some R&R. Need 10 days to rebuild the formations.
Still got enough strength for one last throw of the dice though

Our efforts have been successful, we have unloaded vast amounts of troops and supplies. The reinforcement
effort from the sea will be concluded within a few days. We will continue to fly in troops from the Home
Island and the Marianas. The goal is 100k troops on each of the islands. Then Andy will need 3-400k to beat us.
Will continue to ferry in supplies, want 100k on each island as well. Some 70k on each by now.

He asked for total war, and he got it. I felt it would be good to throw in the kitchen sink since it was so close
to the tap

What escorts do you have available to go with the Taiho? Is the Yamashiro still serving as a decoy?

When I first saw the Yamashiro Maru listed I didnt remember what is was..so got interested.. I just assumed it was another late war desperation conversion.. and it was..but by the army. Thought that was interesting..and truly desperate. Found a picture of it.. post war..

With everything concentrated now around Iwo Jima..have you left yourself vulnerable anywhere else he might be able to exploit? He must have additional troops ready..and maybe he will redirect them now?

The Yamashiro is still pumping water, also want her to attract enemy attention as a lot of others ships are still not
sea worthy enough to make the trip back to the Home Islands.

Yep, the Yamashiro Maru is utterly useless for anything else than decoy missions
The Taiho with one light cruiser and 5 destroyers are heading East and will attempt to find an enemy convoy.

I was relatively weak in the Bonins, if Andy fails here I'm not sure were he can turn. The Home Islands are invulnerable
with 20+ divisions and 9 forts all over. The same goes for Burma, China, the PIs, Formosa, Okinawas and Marianas. If he thinks he'll have more luck there and leave his Army to die on Iwo, I'll be grateful

It's impossible to be seriously strong everywere, but I have now concentrated the bulk of our Army in the 'Citadel'.
Our air force is still a match for Andy minus LBA While our losses have been heavy, the enemy has taken a pounding as well.
I seriously doubt Andy can support another major amphibious invasion with his worn down carrier air groups.

In a way I think it's too bad Andy doesn't get all the pilots and ac he wants. This game makes it extremely difficult to invade
Japan. Simply not enough time as the Jap player is usually able to do better than their historical counterparts. If the game had gone on until 48....gawd forbid

Tried to trick Andy by putting all my fighters on escort missions. Unfortunately weather did away with our
chances Not much else happening really, we have completed unloading the 2nd Armoured at Iwo and Andy can only
dream about conquering it now. Will continue to bring in reinforcements to Bonin, but in a few days I'll be satisfied.

Re-building our Army Sentais, in another few days I'll return some units to China and some to the Home Islands.
Will keep a reserve there. Andy may attempt to bomb the Home Islands from Wake and Marcus soon, but the range is extreme
and I doubt much can be achieved.

The only strike we get of due to bad weather is just a tat to small to do any damage.
I'm seldom lucky with weather and coordinated strike. Cloudy today and while non of Andy's

in the PM phase. Guess I won't get another chance like this.

Another day like yesterday...

Unloading the last supplies and troops in the Bonins. After that I will retire our ships and await
Andy's next move. It has been expensive, but we soon got 500 engineers on each island and some 140k supplies.
What do you think, should I send in more troops? Will Andy bring another 10 divisions to finish the job?

A whole enemy para regiment landed on the Andaman Islands. Our dug in Base Force Garrison
repulsed the first attack, giving us a chance to bring in reinforcements. This is the good thing
about the new Base Force Unit, got 40 SNLF squads for protection.

Destroying enemy para units is a worthwile cause, so let's do it

Let's play with Andy's supply lines A replenish group follows suit and I've dispatched 5 subs and a seaplane
tender to support the group. Don't think Andy will be this vulnerable again, so it's worth a try!

I cant really believe with whats gone on that Andy will continue to just throw himself at the walls of Iwo... at the very least he is going to probe to see where this build up has left you more vulnerable. He still has sea power while you dont..so he will try to use that.

Has he landed troops lately? If not..thats a sure sign he is re thinking things..

PzB,

Andy isn't really a manoeuvrist BUT I've noticed (even from my game with him) that when he feels like he has run into a brick wall that his mind does turn to "going around" rather than going through. He'll feed the entire first echelon in on Day 1 and then feed the 2nd echelon in over the next week or so BUT, and this is the key, if he thinks that he isn't going to achieve decisive results with the 3rd echelon he will try to find somewhere else for it to land.

If you look at Pauk's game with him or even yours you can see several instances where he landed, got involved in a costly stalemate and then landed somewhere else reasonably close by with a view to getting a quick victory. Also, in my game with him he raised the spectre of "invading the mainland" several times when our discussions turned to how well-defended atolls could be if India and China had been neutralised.

So, I think it is time to reconstitute your strategic reserve and guard against his 3rd echelon forces being redirected somewhere else. And no, I doubt that he will go for the Bonin. He needs either Iwo or Bonin and changing direction from Iwo to Bonin now doesn't make sense since you have proven your ability to reinforce iwo by air and thus can be expected to be able to reinforce bonin to the same extent ( especially since you could easily just fly troops from Iwo to Bonin in extremis). No if he goes elsewhere he will probably at least look at the Home Islands or islands close to them so if I were you I would gather my reserve there. Again, just my take on things.

I totally agree with Nemo.. What else is nearby? Aleutians? Norther Islands? Even Guam or Saipan?  The next blow falls there.

I agree guys, looks like Andy will abandon his Bonin adventure and leave 65k troops to their fate!
Believe me, they will all perish

There are NO easy targets around. All bases mentioned have 9 forts, supplies and 500-1000 AP. Marianas and Okinawas and
Northern Japan also got mountainous terrain. Andy's carriers are worn and I doubt he can support another deep amph landing
out of LBA range. Only time will tell.

When we started this battle it was an all or nothing - War Winning or Loosing battle!
I certainly remember

Our battle fleet is back in Japan. Should have the Mutsu, Kirishima, Yamato and Ise ready within 3 months.
Need to fix the cruisers and prepare another destroyer screen in the meanwhile. It's quite amazing that the massed enemy
concentrations of air and sea power hasn't sunk more of them really. Tough hombre's!

It seems that Andy is indeed cutting into the Empire's valuable resource production, possibly meaning that he could be aiming to retake Empire occupied Burma and India. To be honest, though, if I were the Allied Commander, I would personally have attempted such tactics instead of throwing men into both Iwo Jima and the Bonin Islands.

Is there any chance that the Shokaku could be evacuated to the Mainland soon? Also, considering that both Malaya and Singapore have fallen, has this been a great loss to the Empire's overall industrial and resource production or can the Southern Resource Area and Burma still supply?

Until then, we can only hope for absolute victory.

I think Wake Island will put B-29's in extreme range of the Home Islands.
The same may also be the case with Marcus Island. So I have to place some interceptors at the potentially exposed units.

Could someone list the B-29 and B-24 max ranges for me in hexes? So unused to Allied unit stats.

Our capture of India has allowed me to bring our resources and supplies - even now convoys are sneaking past Andy's blocade
and supplying Borneo, the PI and Palaus. Our reserves of resources, supplies and oil should be enough to last through 1945.
A million points of Heavy Industry (HI) points in the bank will be enough to handle any crisis that may arise. I have stopped producing
most transports, cargo and tankers. Armament production has been heavily reduced as well. In all this has helped negate the loss
of Malay and DEI. So no, Andy will not be able to strangle us. The sub menace has been strangled and our transports from China and
Burma area bases are still getting through.

Taking Burma and India will gain Andy points, but I doubt it will be enough to win the war. With the Bonins he's going for the throat.
That's why we replied with an all out effort to stop him. An aggressive and successful start of WitP for Japan makes it perhaps more
difficult for the Allies to win, especially by points, than for Japan - even though Japan has to fight almost hopeless odds in 44-46.

Too bad Andy's running out of Hellcats and pilots, that's not realistic. The nature of A2A make both sides suffer and make kamikaze attacks
almost useless unless you put them hiigh in the skies I've tried to hold my kamiz back and only make Andy pay a somewhat realistic price.
Hope he appreciates this to some degree, even though I know he dislikes the use of this tactic.

I counted: 10 hexes from Bonin to the Home Islands. This means that it takes 5 turns for the Shokaku to move home. With 85 sys and 65 flood
I found that she should make it, so I sortied her under a heavy CAP and escort today Does anyone know if it helps to have an AR in the hex
or same TF as damaged ships?

This is how I forsee the Shokaku's journey if she avoids enemy subs and bombs:
Day 1: 70 flood
Day 2: 75 flood
Day 3: 81 flood
Day 4: 87 flood
Day 5: 92 flood - enters size 10 port

This is a worst case scenario and means that she should reach a size 10 port and be saved if Andy
doesn't prevent it one way or another. In the meanwhile the Taiho is sneaking behind 'enemy lines' in search for troop
transports and crippled warships. Let's prey she doesn't find another birdfarm

B-29s range 20/27
B-24s range 10/14

Wake is only a L4

To use B-29s you would need to have one of the bases in the Marianas either Guam - Saipan - and Tinian

Iwo can give you a base to use B-24s to hit the HI

That is good news!

Andy has mailed me and told me he wants to base Allied bombers in Chinese bases to shut down my training bases there.
I told him this is ofcourse up to him. The reason I've been using training camps is the inability of my bombers to get through the Uber CAP.
Of 100 bombers 1-2 get through and this requires a large number of both escort and bombers is needed even to achieve minor results.

If I only can operate green pilots the number of high altitude kamikaze missions will increase. Only used them in small numbers thus far.
I need a weapon to hit the enemy with, if Andy takes away our ability to use normal strike missions, I will use what I got at my disposal.

As for China: I decided to halt offensive operations in China a long time ago and I'm not vey keen on re-opening that old can of worms at
this time. Major scale ground combat isn't really my cup of tea in WitP. Would be surprised if there are enough supplies in China to perform
an air offensive!

This game is winding down to a brute force struggle...Not sure I like it and in a way I'm glad there's only one year to go.
The only thing to look forward to for Japan is the introduction of the Shinden! All George units upgrade to it and I will increase production 10 fold
in the time to come.

Not finished the next turn, but here is the combat report!
Andy moved his cv's one hex north and they reacted towards the Shokaku and finished her...
Not much luck for the brave old lady She wouldn't have been repaired until late 45, but
I was a bit affectionate about the last of the veteran carriers.

2 enemy carriers were hit by kamikaze strikes in return though, that's something!

According to Andy he will move Allied air power to China in 7 days.
I can't see any alternatives but evacuate. We all know the power of P38Js and 4Es.
Will put my bombers on supply missions for training instead and provide lots of low exp fighter
escorts. Guess we'll have to stick our head inside our shell for the next year!

Does groups which upgrade to Shinden have decent experience?

if so, perhaps you should move them to HI. And, don't forget Reppu - it seems a more than decent figher too, capable to fight with enemy air force..... and they should arrive a month earlier than your ultimate figher (IIRC)

Well PzB I think that if Andy is doing this ( reaping all of the benefits of a quiescent China in the early years only to reactivate it when it suits him ) that you should remove any and all restrictions on your use of kamikazes... Go for all the high altitude kamikaze attacks you can.

George groups have been mostly depleted, got 2 ones that got high exp pilots left and some mediocre ones.
Planned to trained them in time for the Shinden, but since Andy declared that he would re-open China in 7 days I don't have much hope for this.
The ironic thing is that the only other fighter with a higher max altitude than the Zeke is the George (42k feet), but I can't use em for kami missions
since they upgrade to the Shinden

Researching 170 Reppus pr month already, but I'm not sure they'll do the job. Anyone have any experience with the Reppu?

It's a bit like you mention Nemo, I don't mind that Andy re-opens China, but it hurts a bit that he gives a 7 days eviction notice when I'm
at an all low after the heavy fighting in the Bonins. Got a 3 month resignation period for my apartment and you should think China would at
least have 2

Andy says he will mostly be using Chinese Air units, guess they have P40Ns and Mitchells mostly.
Still, I would need more than 7 days to prepare my defenses and I mentioned this to Andy. Four weeks and I could have a plan ready.
I've hinted about this, so maybe we'll get 2-3 weeks...would feel a bit more comfortable with that.

Basic air units in China won't be a huge problem. If they have range and hit stragetic targets that could be a problem. It does look like Andy will never break of Burma.any time soon If he could then 24s and 29s could do a lot of damage. Are B-29s flying out of Chungking? Is Andy paying OP points to move air units from India/Burma to China, then calling them Chinese?

Well two "at least"s

(1) At least he asked first

(2) At least he waited until '45

I had it done to me with no ask and in late '43 ...

But it is true that if the Allies can base oh say 100 P-38s and 400 B-17s in China then they can shorten the war "dramatically".
