Hi there,

I have started playing "The Rising Sun" scenario as Japan against the A.I. Anyway, basically what I want to know is, can I use my aircraft to intercept the enemy aircraft from Malaya and the DEI attacking my convoys? I have set my fighters to sweep and even LCAP but they do not intercept any attacking aircraft.

While AA fire is good and I can defend my convoys via that method, it would be useful if I could use my Oscars and Zeroes to shoot down some Hudsons, etc.

Does anyone know if this is possible? It should be, I presume, "Air Superiority", etc.

Thanks.

Yes if you have bases near your convoys you can plot LRCAP to provide some cover. However, this is not a very efficient method. It wears out the air units and it is not guarranteed to work regardless. In other words, die rolls are involved. Better methods are to route your convoys away from enemy airbases and or bomb or capture the enemy airbases which are near your convoys. Oh, in plotting your cover cap, if you want to improve your odds you can target a specific one of your convoys. This will increase the odds of covering that particular convoy. But if you need to cover lots of different convoys, then not plotting a target will enable at least a chance that some of your fighters will be over your convoy when the enemy bombers arrive.

I see......thanks for the information there jwilkerson. I have set my cap to about 60 (give my pilots some rest) and they are set to sweep (it does it automatically)

Their patrol area is well within the distance between Malaya and Indo-China (say the ones based in Saigon)

I am doing this right or should I be stationing aircraft in Malaya itself?

LRCAP is always 100% (that just means that all the unit will fly LRCAP during the day... at any time between 10% and 40% of the unit will really be in place to intercept raids... this number depending of the range of the flight, added to other usual things (air HQ, overcowded AF, etc..)).

If you reduce CAP to less than 100%, no more LRCAP is flown and the unit will fly sweep (defect order) to the same hex it was LRCAPing before (if you didn't change it), but only if this hex has an enemy base or unit inside. The percentage CAP you left will fly CAP over its home base.

LRCAP can be ordered over an hex (with an unit or a base of any side inside) or over a TF (even out of range when order is given).

LRCAP will see fatigue rise fast, and then op losses become more frequent. The best is to have several units, each flying LRCAP one day and resting the other(s).

Flying LRCAP over Malaya invasion spots is working... You won't stop Allied raids but will at least shot down some of them. It works far better to have fighters based in the hex where your ships are, so as soon as you own Khota Bharu or any other place you are landing in, move Nates or Oscars and fly in air support personnel. IJAAF aircraft are often enough for defence in the first months of war, Zeroes are more useful escorting Betties and Nells and shooting everything in range.

By the way, fighters on CAP or LRCAP over a hex may fail to intercept incoming raids, but should appear in the combat report and combat animation if you use it. Their only presence may also be enough for unescorted bombers to cancel their attack.

Excellent, thankyou very much for that useful information AdmiralLaurent! That clears things up, I'll try that tactic later on when I start a game.

Cheers.
