I tend to agree with 1275Ppsi's logic, but not the conclusion of "faking" a strong defense. IMHO causing more pain here  will cause Andy to take much longer to launch successive attacks.

The geography of the HI means that you will likely have to expose the Combined Fleet for at least 1 turn at any rate, unless you want to sit them in a port far away from Luzon, if not he just port bombs you with B-24 and B-29s.

I'd look for a way to stage the CF into position, and then overwhelm him with small surface TFs.  I'd also look to defend PI with as much AC as can be replaced in 2-3 months.  It looks to me that Andy is making the same mistake he made at the Marianas, except he brought a bigger hammer this time.

Good luck, and Happy Hunting!

Not sure that throwing Reppus and sending the fleet in PI would do the difference. But, you can not delay Allies with no reacting there.

I would suggest hybrid plan - move some fighers there and locate them at Clark field - make a Scot to pay hard for air supperiority. It seems that he sweeps PI with carrier based ac, right? If you wear his CV figher force than you can delay him... fleet should be used ONLY for cripples and TFs out of position IMHO...

You have to hit him while you can hurt him and you can hurt him best as long as he has no (or only long range) land-based air support. Once he has established his position on Luzon you will most likely get little more opportunities to bring short and medium range attack forces effectively into position against any future moves. And this includes ships and planes, so I'd say strike now while he is limited to his naval assets.

Instead of Reppus you could load just Zeke Kamis on the Taiho, give it a cautios Admiral as TF commander, make his carriers react and have your Reppus LR-CAP it. Of course, this works only if your carrier does not react out of the LR-CAP range and the airbases are not shrouded in, but at least the Kamis should strike anyway.
If your airfields on Formosa are operational again you could base you better fighters there and LR-CAP your fleet from there while it tries to interdict the landings.

Your attack air should try to wear down his naval air arm again and you could use some 'fake' TFs to bleed his ops points. After the bombardments his battleships will have only ammo for one more surface engagement - you might send some PGs or whatever to waste those and then bring your SC TFs. Similarly, such dummy TFs could soften up the results of his bombardments TFs. You might also have a look at the TF numbers as IIRC lower TF numbers attack first - so dummy TFs first to make him waste his ammo, and then the main fleet. But he will bring dedicated SC TFs as well and he can replenish from AEs, so not much room to exploit this either.

If he comes with such a huge force (20 Divisions), you have to act quick as he might have his first bases on D-Day (next turn I guess from your last screenshot) +2 or 4, operational airfields with many planes a day or two later. You will have not much time to bring your strike capabilities to bear.

Good look in whatever path you take!

do you happen to have any CVE or CVL left for sacrificial purposes? if so, wouldn't a single CVE suffice to make at least one allied TF react out of CAP range, leaving the landing force without air cover? probably very gamey, but nevertheless much better than leading Taiho to the slaughter.
first post here, but long time reader of your AAR.

i would vote for your option if the date is not so close to the historical end. The good thing with the 20 divisions loaded on the transports is they will suffer during the disembarking (Andy likes to unload troops in the wawes - if 1st wave is not enough then he will land 2nd... that is why you need to guess right where he will land). Then, those troops are prepared for the PI and will take one month (at least) until he occupy and establish strong base at PI. This gives you another month and Andy will must set new targets for preparation no earlier than that.... trust me, PP are very important for ground combat.

On the other hand, Andy wants those lvl 5 AFs that he can bomb HI with hundreds of B-29 and ruin PzBs war economy. Don't think he will bother with small AFs in central PI or in southern Luzon (if they aren't expanded). I would try to defend all AFs big enough for allied monsters as long as i can. Cant say anything about P-51 range and i don't know if they can fly from Manila or Clark field. If they can't that means these two AFs are only secondary important targets for him and i would rather defend Aparri, Lingayen etc than Manila.

Reppus and Shindens can weaken enemy air offensive (lets hope!) - if not stop it. Yo have to judge well what is worth more to you:

- all out defence where you can delay Allies for few weeks and deplete his Hellcat/Corsair CAP and denie use of PI AFs for certain time; and loosing your fighers which can defend HI

- let Andy to capture PI relativly (sp?) "easy" and save your fighter force for upcoming air offensive against HI....

Not sure that anyone of us knows the right answer... i guess you will be the first one!

Appreciate your input Nice to see you posting Distiller! Also long time Herbie-San has visited us!

The enemy has landed in 2!!!! location on the North and North Eastern tip of the Philippines;

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuguegarao; 9 Forts. Mountain terrain.
Japanese Assault Value = 576 on Day 1.

Air reinforcements are incoming but nothing else can be spared.

Allied forces Day 1 - 80019 troops, 579 guns, 115 vehicles, Assault Value = 2078
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aparri; 9 Forts. Clear Terrain.
Japanese Assault Value = 305 on Day 1.

Air reinforcements on the way and 244th Division (70% strength) is one days march away.
The 5th Armoured Div (65% strength) and one inf regiment (65% strength) and one Coastal Gun Regiment are 2? days march away.

Allied forces Day 1 - 142830 troops, 1704 guns, 182 vehicles, Assault Value = 4054
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm not overly worried about Tuguegarao, mountain terrain and strong defenses including a tank regiment. It's a size 3(3) AF.
Aparri on the other hand is were the bulk of the enemy troops disembarket and it's a clear hex. I've been marching my reinforcements here for quite some time and within a few days it will have ca 1000 AP and an armoured div and a Coastal Gun Regiment. Not sure if it's enough Aparri is a size 6(3) AF and Andy wants it.

Been reading your advice with interest and agrees with most of what is said.
I feel that we have to do our best to hurt and delay Andy; as always Will try to do it under cover of 'Tojo Weather'
without destroying the Combined Fleet completely.

See screenie for more detailed battle plan!

Strike Plan!

The Fast Battle Squadron (30kt) was the only one that could reach Aparri invasion beaches in a sprint.
It may encounter overwhelming enemy forces. Our light patrol TFs have been engaging enemy fleets for days in skirmishes
and enemy fleets launched bombardments tonight.

THIS is the time to strike. The enemy is of guard, buys protecting his fleet and as vulnerable as he will ever get.

The Main Battle Fleet with the Yamato can only move 4(4) hexes, the Fuso only managing 22 knots. I'm still trying to send
them 5 hexes into Aparri. Sometimes TFs manage 1 hex more than the average movement allowance. This is the best I could do.

The 2nd Battle Fleet with many of our lightly damaged vessels moved 1 hex shorter than I hoped she would and ended up 6 hexes away from Aparri. (I wanted to achieve surprise and keep them away from enemy strike ac). So the fleet will line up for a strike just north of Aparri, hoping to catch something here

The Yamashiro has been spotted, so we have to assume the enemy has been alerted...if Andy watched the entire combat replay that is All our TFs will retreat into Takao, our size 9 port/airfield. I have also dispatched numerous subs and patrol type TFs into the area.

Nothing more for me to do than open the next turn...

PS! Pauk, Clark is CLOSED and I don't have the engineers to re-open it soon enough. Manila and Lingayen are operational.

PzB,

I think that you don't have to worry much about the invasion of Luzon...

Andy did not fly enough ground attacks against your forces before the landings to take Aparri and Tuguegarao in time. He should have done this both against the invasion targets and adjacent hexes (the WITP-way to fly 'interdiction'). Thus we'll probably see another stalemate even without a committment of the Japanese fleet.

And please, could you post a screenie of 244th IJA Division? I've never seen one of the Japanese "militia" divisions in WITP. Just curious what they do look like!

Well, this was a helluva turn!

Not sure were to start, will not have time to process the turn before tonight at earliest.

1. Weather was almost clear all over the map.
2. Enemy carriers only had very few ac on naval attack.
3. We had the first Yamato vs Iowa class battleship engagements.
4. Naval combat went better than expected, too bad I didn't leave the TFs in Aparro into the day.
5. Our Air Force delivered a strong punch.
6. More than half of our bombers stayed home despite the perfect opportunities.
7. Enemy shock attack at Tuguegarao reduced forts 4 level!
8. Enemy shock attack by 180k enemy troops at Aparro captured the base. Unfortunately your predicitions didn't come through Kerreguelen. Personally I hoped we could hold for 2-3 days at most!

The problem with defending the Philippines is that the South Area Army in Manila has sucked in most of the supplies
and only 'deliveres' what the other bases need. After the bombardments yesterday Aparro had only 250 supplies left and this
completely diluted their defensive capabilities.

With 3-400k enemy troops in Luzon it will take no longer to get to Manila than the time it takes to march there
Andy is constantly using this 'follow' order for his tank regiments. Bloody annoying it is!!

Will post the entire combat report shortly.

I hope for you that your plans do work. But I am afraid the bulk of the combined fleet will see action for the last time if they can not get out of the way fast enough after the night actions.

Well, that was indeed a surprise - I did not expect Andy to shock attack that early. And seems that he has brought enough tanks, artillery and combat engineers along and unloaded them in the first landing turn.

wonder how he did that... were the forts reduced by his engineers are did his assault reduce the forts. When I achieve a 3:1 for example, the forts still only drop by 1 level.

Yes, the share size of the enemy landings was more than enough to overwhelm our defenders.

I have not been able to afford to place sufficiently supplies into the Philippines, Palaus or Marianas.
All these places are now vulnerable due to low supply levels. The Inner Defensive Perimeter has priority
and unfortunately this is the way it has to be.

Some 70k supplies in Luzon, but Manila is holding onto most of them and 250 B-29s is enough to torch the
'local' supply depots. In future games I would strive to place Army HQ at Aparri and Legaspi as well as in Manila
and stock these HQs with 150k supplies each.

Will spend some time now considering what to do next. Formosa and Okinawas have adequate supply levels and I'd like to
fall back behind them and produce Reppus and Shindens. By some miracle we still have a fleet left
In retrospect my initial assumption that Luzon could not be held was right, and we have managed to hurt the enemy.
Now we will attempt to dish out some more damage, delay - delay and delay his advances and prepare for the next battle.

Not counting merchants and landing crafts, this is a rough estimate of damaged/sunk enemy Naval ships today:

4 enemy cve's hit by kamikazes, one likely to sink.
2 enemy battleships at least moderately damaged; North Carolina and Richelieu.
2 enemy light cruisers heavily damaged.
1 enemy dd sunk, 3-4 more damaged.
4 enemy de's sunk
2 AGP sunk, 1 damaged
3 MSW sunk, several damaged

The closest enemy port is Saigon...so the heavily damaged ships are in serious trouble.

Our own casualties includes;
BB Yamato with 45 sys damage.
BBs Fuso and Yamashiro moderately damaged.
BB Mutsu may sink.
CA Takao heavy but not critical damaged
1 light cruiser moderately damaged
5-6 destroyers with medium to heavy damage
1 sub sunk
Several MSW and patrol crafts.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/19/45

I have edited all the enemy landings and small actions to focus on the important battles!

Surface Combat

Our Main Battle Fleet was superior to the enemy who nevertheless landed the first non-decisive hits!

The Wisconsin only took small caliber hits from the Yamato at 4-6000 yards.

North Carolina took several 16" hits from the Mutsu and landed a few in return that almost crippled her.
The Richelieu took 2 14" hits and hit the Fuso with 1 or 2 15" shells.
The Takao was pummeled by 6" hits but gutted the Phoenix in return.

Our destroyers were inferior to the enemy, but fought well.

The Philippines

Here you can see what's left of the supply at Tuguegarao.
The question is what to do next?

I suggest falling back on Manila and slowly disengage our troops in the front. Andy will be flying his bombers
of Aparro by tomorrow if I'm not mistaken.

Too bad I just can't get involved right now, but I am following everyone one of your moves - and Pauk san's too of course  - and you're both doing very well.

Cripple him for good in the PI. I Think our Scot friend just decided to give up quick victory by invading this forsaken bunch of islands...

About the Kamikazis, from what I see here, I believe speed seems to prove to be more a factor to the hit chances then the size of the ship, that would explain why you can't manage to hit a CV while AKs and... LCIs get splashed hard. Is it hardcoded?

And about the the Reppus, I'd keep 'em for a cunning plan too.

There would be so many things to comment but I just don't have the occasion yet to say everything I'd like to say. Maybe it's better this way, Ive been the source of a couple blunders already if my memory doesn't fail me

Keep on fighting Samourai!!!!

Hi Fish,

Good to hear from you again!

I don't understand why it's so impossible to score hits on bigger warships - only smaller ones.
Must be as you say, speed is of the essence. A bit ironic, big ships = bigger targets and this should negate speed advantage.
Big ships ain't very manouverable, especially not compared to air planes....

The fact that our troops in Aparri could be bombed out of all their supplies and ammunition while secure supply lines
existed was scary. I hoped that Southern Area Army in Manila would replace destroyed supplies. Obviously not quick enough.

The game misses the fact that all troops will be able to put up a hard fight no matter how many bombardments the enemy performs.
Disruption yes, destruction of frontline ammunition and emergency supplies - definetly not. My idea that the Southern Area Army with an operational range of 9(8) hexes would be enough in Luzon was mistaken. Pretty sure many of you WitP vets have cursed about how supply is drained from your bases.

Before I finish the next turn I have to think;

There is an opening for a second strike! The Fast Battle Squadron is undamaged and got enough fuel and ammo for another sortie. (WHY didn't it engage the enemy transports longer with fuel and ammo still available...Grrrr:p) The 2nd Battle Group is also ready and I can probably put together another TF from the Main Battle Group. The Yamato will head for the Okinawas, still manage 15 knots.

As I told Andy, despite some very annoying facts, I'm quite pleased that we managed to strike with inferior forces and get away with it without loosing our fleets...which was a very likely outcome. If we charge into Appari again - maybe on bombardment mission with aggressive commander, we could meet a lot of enemy ships with no or little ammunition left, again causing chaos and allowing our bombers to strike. In Manila alone there are 100 Betty's that didn't sortie yesterday

Would this be pushing it? Andy would be on his guard and his carriers on naval attack...but weather is very unpredictable
and there is an opening for us now.

As for our troops in northern Luzon I'm planning a staged withdrawal towards Lingayen and then into Manila. With supplies and 2500 AP we should be able to tie down enemy resources for quite some time.

Need input again here!

BTW: Did you see how our Main Battle Group with a speed of 22 knots and an indicated movement radius of 4/4 hexes managed to move 5 hexes into Aparri today? The undamaged elements reached Takao after moving 5+4 hexes in total.

hm... since you've already risk your Navy why not do it again? Andrew will not expect that you will do the same thing (....after you've tried it for 17 times... and that is why your plan is so brilliant)

if you expect some gains from this move (not only sinking few barges and two transports) then go for it)... otherwise...

EDIT: oh, the naval movement... me like it very much... i refueled eastern KB division, sent her somwhere and two turns afer that i saw that this TF can move only 4/1 because some ships spent ops points (all ships were refueled, all air groups were stood down)....

You know what they say, desperate situations require desperate measures!
Do you think I'm jumping the gun, Pauk, or are the words 'I have a cunning plan' marching with ill-deserved confidence in the direction of this conversation?

It is very difficult in itself to manouver the Fleet into position to strike at the enemy without being chopped to pieces
by 1000 naval attack ac

As it is now the fleet can strike on Appari while Andy's ships are hurt, damaged, low on ammo and even out of action.
He can not move his carriers into Appari because of the surface threat. The only undamaged enemy battle fleet consists of the USS Texas and some other older dreadnoughts. He's very low on cruisers and battleships, and future invasions will be even more difficult for him the more we put out of commission.

After striking Appari our ships will take refuge in Takao, only 4 hexes away.
Here we got 400 of our best George, Tony and Reppu fighteds on CAP. So there is a chance to also hurt his naval air arm seriously before Appari becomes fully operational. Today he would have to transfer long range fighters and bombers from Malaya, Burma and other far away places. Fatigue will be high and the units not ready for offensive action.

If we succeed in bombarding overstacked Appari enemy losses could be in 5 digits
Allied ground losses:
28346 casualties reported

Imagine the primal scream from the other AAR

Since half of my strike force stayed home yesterday *GRRRRRR*
I'd like to give them another chance to win victories for the Emperor!

Here is a status screen over damaged and operational units;
Notice how the Taiho has been equipped with elite Grace, Judy and _Reppu_ fighters

As for kamikazes, I think that the AA defences of an US CV in 45 may also be the reason why so many kamikaze fail, while they will be more successfull against AK. I guess that your kami are no more experienced at this stage.

Day Air Combat

Bad weather shrouded Aparri in all day; in all 170 enemy fighters, 65 bombers and 170 aux
were reported there. Andy will NOT be happy about it as our bombers reigned almost freely!

Our capital ships fought extremely valiantly today; Next - the Taiho takes on an enemy carrier
fleet and gets away with it I sent her south as I wanted to intercept enemy ships returning towards Marcus Island.
She attracted a lot of attention and a huge enemy carrier fleet reacted towards her. After Andy failed to sink our fleets
that were parked 2 hexes from his carriers he said:

"It wont happen again…..my carriers are waiting !!!"

What can I say? Oops, I did it again!

Our Reppu's went into action against superior enemy numbers and they killed Hellcats like they were Wildcats!!!
The numerous superior Corsairs were still a match though. Our Reppus had an avg exp of 62!

Again only smaller numbers of enemy naval attack ac came in and the Taiho dodged bombs, torpedoes and bomb skipping
Corsairs all day long!!

I think it's time to retire the Combined Fleet! It's still alive to fight another day.
Even the Mutus may make it

Time to finish enemy cripples with naval ac and subs!

With all the highs and lows you had over the last few years, this piece of action gave me a warm fuzzy feeling after a long time. Really nice to see the Reppus do a solid job under such unfavourable conditions. And the Taiho sortie...
Medals all around, it's on the house

I would not have bet a cent on the Taiho returning from this sortie... A very very good turn for you.

Nice to see you around again Honda!
As I told Andy, This is what I live for in 1945 - not the big victories but the amazing small miracle sorties
The less you have to fight with, the better you have to use it!

I really wanted to take advantage of one of the last opportunities to fight great naval battles in this game.
That's one of the best reasons for playing this game

The Taiho may still be sunk, but she got a fair chance now.
She's an amazingly sturdy ship - not a coincident that she is the only Jap carrier left alive.
If you read her TROM Laurent, you may have been willing to put a few cent on her after all!

Pauk-San's scenario didn't come through - fortunately! Still got some limbs left
I think we have achieved our goal, most of the enemy's battleships have been damaged together with half a dozen cruisers
and escort carriers. They don't have a port in a thousand miles radius and have to dodge subs and air strikes to make it home.
The battle isn't over yet, and maybe we can further attrit Andy's armada and diminish his ability to launch another major offensive before we have 600 Reppus and 500 Shindens operational!

Congrats! What a great victory by you! Andrew is quite careless knowing that you almost have no KB and IJN! - you've managed to achive one of the greatest victory I ever seen - despite all odds! Finally your cuning plan worked.. Imperial Pauk Family will study Battle of PI as "New Hope"-go!

Can you list all enemy CVE sunk so far in the game?

Yep, it was a great day for all IJ Fanboys!

Now back to the reality of total war and total enemy domination.
Andy may have gotten spanked, but knowing him he will only take a look at his reserves and shrug it of.

As it is I can not afford to sent more fighters to Luzon. The 350 crack fighters in Takao will protect our fleet for a while, but we cannot afford to
fight enemy LBA for long. I'm going to order a few follow up strikes by the Naval bombers and the Fleet will sortie with the Ise and Yamashiro and a mangled assortment
of light/moderately damaged cruisers and destroyers. The aim is the hex immediately east of Appari; should be rich pickings here

With a little luck we can retire the Battle Fleet home to Japan and try to fix the Yamato and Taiho to fight yet another day.
A big Reppu screen will be needed against bad weather soon.... The Mutsu now has a daylight exp of 99. Not sure how she can be saved though, Takao isn't a very safe
spot in the time to come.

Last supply convoys from India will attempt to unload either in Manila or Palau/Marianas.

Back indeed to the reality of total war!

After having our fun and humilating Halsey, Andy massed his forces placing all his ships, except cv's, into Appari and sent 200 Corsairs and Mustangs on sweeps over Takao and plastering the place with 200 B-29s.

Our best fighters fought well and claimed 120 top enemy fighters, but after the first wave they were overwhelmed and
the remainder smashed on the ground. The 2nd Battle Sqd only moved 5 hexes, despite of being able to move 4/4. Never makes much sense to me this movement!-) 2 battleships, 2 ca, 2-3 dd's pummeled by enemy naval ac. The good news is that the invulnerable Kirishima and Yudachi survived, the former only with 11 sys damage after taking 50 bomb hits <G> The Taiho and Yamato are also safe and will form the nucleus of a strike force.

A major strike on an enemy cv TF cost us 125 ac with only 1 TBD breaking through.
Don't feel too bad abpit it as there's nothing I can't do about game mechanics and use of such brute force
Some 100k Jap and 50k Allied ac have been destroyed in this game thus far
Today alone some 600 Jap and 150 Allied ac were destroyed.
Ca 200 Jap ac destroyed on the ground while all Allied ac were shot down in A2A. Good thing is that many of our pilots survived
as they fought over friendly turf.

With 900 Reppus coming of the lines soon we will provide new ac for the quickly enough

Some of the most important actions below:

Capital ships hit:

BB Yamashiro, Bomb hits 5, Torpedo hits 2, on fire
BB Ise, Bomb hits 5, Torpedo hits 3, heavy damage
CA Nachi, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
CA Mikuma, Torpedo hits 1
CL Noshiro, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Tochi, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Isonami, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Nachi, Isonami and Tochi sinks, the Yamashiro and Ise have ca 40 sys, 30 flood and 10 fires.
The question is were I should send them...Takao or towards Home Islands. Should have sailed them all home yesterday,
but obviously we pis$ed Andy of big time

The Mutsu is disbandoned into the relative safety of Takao port. With 99 damage all over
the place we can't protect it from tomorrows B-29 waves.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Camranh Bay and Tuguegarao fell after continued enemy assaults; Glad I'll never have to ruin my tongue on that awful name again!-) Ironically, our troops west of T shock attack the enemy tanks that follow our retreating troops over
a river. Andy's advancing tanks on the other hand did not have to shock attack

Here's a cut and paste of the loong list of actions.
Removed failed night air attacks, bombing runs and enemy attack on patrol crafts and minesweepers.

All our kamis failed to hit their targets or were shot down by P-38s over Appari.
Only 1 enemy LST was sunk today and our subs were mostly hunted instead of hunters.

Next Wed-Thursday I'll be going on vacation for 3-4 weeks.
From the 12th of August my fiance will be moving in....so turnaround rate will be dropping as real life and
all its doing makes an impact on the war. Been trying to increase turnaround lately, but the turns take too long if I
want to do them properly...which is the only way I do them!-)

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/21/45

Air Combat

This was the best CAP I could muster and it couldn't even manage 1-1 parity with an inferity force of Corsairs and
Hellcats. Bring on the Shinden I say...Reppus fight well, but the Corsair is still the Advanced Tie fighter in this game.
Had hoped to cause even bigger losses on the enemy if he pounded Takao, but as long as weather didn't shut down some enemy cv's or bases, it was impossible to achieve much.
