i have returned from the glorious Fourth of July parade - 15 vehicles (including 5-6 firetrucks, ambulances) decorated and driving through one neighborhood... i got convinced to ride on a truck with myh niece... she had a super-soaker and would squirt the crowd.

The car in front of use was throwing candy... she'd wait until everyone was picking up the treats and then zap them!!!

The "big excitement" was (apparently) when the fire department got a call in the middle of the parade... i guess they told them to "deal with it" because no trucks left the parade (first things first!!!)

Anybody have any plans for the 4th? I'm heading over to a friends house that overlooks the city...we intend to watch people's houses burst into flames as they misuse illegal fireworks.

Ah. It's good to see that the younger generation appreciates a good dastardly plan.

Year 70:

The building of the Colosseum starts (approximate date).

Frontinus is praetor of Rome.

Pliny the Elder served as procurator in Gallia Narbonensis.

June 5 - Titus and his Roman legions breach the middle wall of Jerusalem.

August 4 - Roman General and future Emperor Titus destroys the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, leaving erect only the famous Western Wall. Rome stations troops in Jerusalem and abolishes the Jewish high priesthood and Sanhedrin. This becomes known as the Fall of Jerusalem, a conclusive event in the First Jewish-Roman War. Following this event, the Jewish religious leadership moves from Jerusalem to Jamnia (present day Yavne), and the destruction is mourned annually as the Jewish fast of Tisha B'Av.

Neapolis (present day Nablus) is founded in Iudaea Province.

Roman legions V Alaudae and XV Primigenia are destroyed during the Batavian rebellion. Later, Quintus Petillius Cerialis puts down the Batavian rebellion of Gaius Julius Civilis.

Roman legions I Germanica and IIII Macedonica are disbanded, II Audiutrix is created.

Later Roman Emperor Domitian marries Domitia Longina.

Romans make a punitive expedition against Garamantes - they are forced to have an official relationship with the Empire.

Annexation of the island of Samothrace by the Roman Empire under Vespasian.

India sees the end of the Hellenistic dynasties.

Expedition by the Roman Septimius Flaccus in the South of Egypt. He probably reaches Sudan.

Ze-Hakèlé (Zoscales in Greek) becomes king of Aksum.

70 BC

August - In Rome, Cicero prosecutes former governor Verres; Verres exiles himself to Marseille before the trial is over.

Pompey and Marcus Licinius Crassus become consul.

The office of censor is reinstated in the Roman Republic.

Lucullus captures Sinop, then invades Armenia.

Phraates III becomes the King of Parthia

July 4 factoid:

Although observance of the holiday began in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, the day was not made a legal holiday until 1941.

More factoids:

In 1777, British officers fired 13 guns, once at morning and again as evening fell, on July 4 in Bristol, Rhode Island. Philadelphia celebrated the first anniversary in a manner a modern American would find quite familiar: an official dinner for the Continental Congress, toasts, 13-gun salutes, speeches, prayers, music, parades, troop reviews and fireworks. Ships were decked with red, white and blue bunting.
In 1778, General George Washington marked the Fourth of July with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the Atlantic Ocean, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France.
In 1779, July 4 fell on a Sunday. The holiday was celebrated on Monday July 5.
In 1781, Massachusetts was the first legislature to recognize the Fourth of July.
In 1783, Moravians in Salem, North Carolina held the first celebration of the Fourth of July in the country with a challenging music program assembled by Johann Friedrich Peter. This work was titled the Psalm of Joy.
In 1791, First recorded under "Independence Day" name.[3]
In 1870, the U.S. Congress made Independence Day a holiday, albeit unpaid, for federal employees... since it wasn't a LEGAL holiday until 1941, i guess this meant it was an ILLEGAL holiday!!

A lot of ships in CHS start off damaged... this reflects actual condition of the ships IRL...

I didn't think there was one actually at Papaete in CHS?  There is an AK next to it, in the same hex as 2 Jap PGs (AK Vincent)

Two Jap PGs would explain it...never saw them to my knowledge...Vincent has fires, system and float damage...

I am off to a wake with a funeral and a dentist appointment tomorrow. Not a fun holiday for me.

Watch those illegal fireworks. Just saw on CNN that someone got killed by them already

Very very nice. Have you seen the new (closer to) scale stuff that Fremen is re-doing? I like a lot of his older stuff for the detail, but I am starting to come round to scale sides...

All of my new stuff is done to the 'standardised' scale that was decided on. I really like Fremen's art stuff and I try to keep my stuff similar in style to his.

It's not the firecrackers that kill...it's the stupidity...

You certainly do some beautiful work. It is getting pretty hard to choose for almost every side!
